gehringer_2 Posted July 1 Posted July 1 if someone told you on opening day that Jansen, Vest and Holton would all be useless, you'd have been worried, wouldn't you? Quote
chasfh Posted July 1 Posted July 1 Did you guys see Riley jogging into the infield after the win? He’s Mickey Mantle without the speed. Quote

kdog Posted July 1 Posted July 1 That is the 3rd road series win of the year.. San Diego, Tampa, and the Yankees..3 decent teams. Quote

He really looks like a Hannah Barbara cartoon when he runs. Like he has to get his legs and feet fully going before he actually moves anywhere and then shuffles his arms back and forth instead of up and down Quote
lordstanley Posted July 1 Posted July 1 Given this, the 15-11 record for the month seems like underachieving. 2 Quote

I believe that Detroit is 4 games above .500 vs opponents who are above .500. It's all those losses against sub teams, and usually by 1 or 2 runs that crushed their season. One Jansen, Vest and Holton pitch at a time Quote

oblong Posted July 1 Posted July 1 I can't keep track of all the "H"'s in terms of how i feel. Holton, Hurter, Hanifeee... it's all the same. Bum. Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted July 1 Posted July 1 They're setting us up again. They're making us feel like "Hey, this might not be over" and then they'll go into another tailspin. Or they'll be playing well, but Stanford Boy will absolutely insist that Vest and Jansen will turn it around and refuse to use someone else as the 8th/9th inning guys. And he'll do it over and over and over. Just try someone. I'd rather see Jake Rogers throwing knuckleballs than Vest or Jansen at this point. I am sadly rooting for one or both of those guys come up with an minor injury that isn't career-threatening, but enough to put them on the shelf for 2 weeks - because I think it's the only way to prevent Hinch from acting like a computer instead of trusting his own eyes. 1 Quote
chasfh Posted July 1 Posted July 1 I was surprised to see how kickass all their ERAs, ERA+s, and batting against stats are, even though they don’t strike out bunches of guys like we would like a power reliever to do. They don’t give up bunches of walks or extra-base hits. I think we are all underwhelmed by them because they have failures in memorable high-profile situations. I wish I could easily pull up a clutch stats comparison. 1 Quote
kdog Posted July 1 Posted July 1 The fringy bullpen guys like Anderson, Sommers, DeJesus, etc have been decent. Holton, Finnegan, Vest, and Jansen have been putrid. Quote

I bet nobody can tell, but I'm a huge believer in human inconsistency. People wake up day everyday with millions of new cells - the physiology is genetically preprogrammed with age related change timers. Athletic consistency over time is the most outlier thing a human body can achieve - it's at risk every single day from a million environmental, physical and psychological inputs. I think one of the things that the extreme metrification of baseball has done is implicitly increase the assumption of consistency to a point somewhat beyond what is justified. If I have all these numbers on a guy, that must be who he is. Well that's who he was when you measured those numbers, that he is still the same guy has to be re-verified every day (thank heaven for statcast immediacy data). It's common in baseball for careers to just peter out without a lot of warning because a guy just loses it. You have to be on-guard for it all the time. Edited July 1 by gehringer_2 Quote

They have all had horrible moments in leverage. Two outs walks, then an immediate homers...it's just a cluster of bad outcomes. Quote

But you increase your chances of bad outcomes when you perform poorly. It's a solo home run if you don't walk the guys. If I've got a reliever in my BP with a WHIP pushing 1.5 I want my GM to give me someone else because I can't/shouldn't use that guy at leverage safely. Quote

It does seem to happen more often to relievers. They emerge out of nothingness and then seem to fade back into. Perhaps to reappear and often never to be heard from again. Quote

One of the reasons Tork’s WAR is only 0.4 despite his 108 wRC+ is because of his inability to adequately defend. Quote

I don't know how good 1B metrics are, but however he ranks league wide, he is the best defensive 1B the Tigers have. Quote

The Tigers have beaten good teams. They are 23-21 against teams with a record at or above .500 this year. The problem, strangely enough, has been losing to bad teams; they're 14-28 against under-.500 teams this season. Quote
