Imagine being an Athletics fan salivating over the thought of a bullpen game versus the Tigers crap bullpen and then losing 2-1.  Isn't that how this usually works?

Even better.

Let’s not forget that Baez is raking since coming off the DL.

13-1 in the 9th. Can the bullpen hold?

They have so far!

Turns out a 12-run lead is bullpen-proof. Tigers win!

15-9 record for the month of July to end it 6 games under .500 after starting it 12 games under .500

Started July 9.0 games behind Chicago; ended it 6.5 games back. Started July 7.0 games behind Cleveland; ended it 3.5 games back. Started July 3.5 games behind Minnesota; they've now 3.0 games behind Minnesota but with the Twins leading the Mariners in the 8th tonight.

Any chance we can add a few extra months to the regular season?

You know, I don’t care how this season shakes out. Who comes or who goes. I just enjoy the team. I enjoy the possibilities, I lament the failures. Things are more interesting with them than without them. It was great to watch those last two innings after the fact on mlb.com.

Baseball is a mixture of poetry, of war, of commerce, and it always has been. It’s amazing how much fun and drama and angst and joy this spectacle can arouse.

And seeing the results of the Harris era with these young guys breaking into the show is really gratifying.

You’re right that the bullpen is a weakness and needs addressed and that Clark doesn’t address that directly.  However, it doesn’t mean that Clark is not ready for promotion and/or that his play in CF and at the plate cannot help the Tigers.

Very true. We also need a true right fielder. 4 rookies in the game last night. At one point, 5. That's a lot for any team to absorb. And while the bullpen pitched well, it was the Athletics. I enjoy the win but it's basically the same bunch that basically cost us the playoffs this season. Building a good bullpen is so incredibly hard and possibly the most important part of a team. Starting pitchers rarely go very deep into games, leaving close games reliant on the pen. It's failed this Tiger team this season, so far. Still time for another epic comeback.

Detroit is 28th in center field WAR and 22nd in reliever WAR.

Yeah, I get that. CF has been a problem ever since Javy went down. RF doesnt seem much better. But....according to the MLB standings, the Tigers have an expected win-loss record of 60-50. 8 games better than their actual record. Maybe a league average CF and RF would have scored enough runs to offset their putrid bullpen? I dont know, maybe a couple of games. I just think our horrible bullpen has more to do, directly with losses, than our weak CF production. Who knows what coulda been....I'm just saying that, while having Max up here and playing is exciting, he's not really the solution to this teams main problem.

no argument with any of this, but consider that a weak bullpen will blow fewer 3 run leads than 1 run leads. If you can't pitch, scoring more runs and catching more outs is the next best thing.

Yes, good hitting solves a lot of problems.  If they hit, the bullpen will still hurt them, but not as much.

Javy is so extraodinary at this because he's doing a 'swipe catch' of the throw, so the glove is already in motion toward the runner as he catches the ball.
