2021-22 Tigers Hot Stove League

There will be a flurry before Thursday.    I think we'll have our shortstop by then.   I think someone is going to vastly overpay Correa and the shortstop we end up with will end up being a better value (Story, Semien, Baez).   We wanted Rich Aurilia (don't know if they Tigers did, but when Seattle grabbed him, we "settled" for Carlos Guillen and we won that by a landslide.

Baez may realistically realize that he is the 5th best SS out there (Correa-Seagar-Story-Semien-Baez) and maybe he does not want to be under the gun in Feb as there is a mad scramble to find a team.

So can you get him now, for 5/125, or less? Baez carries a different type of risk.

Generally speaking, it's not clear to me that the free agents have as much leverage as we assume either.

I'm sure the CBA figures into that as well.

Mets also signed Canha to a two-year deal.

A decent player, but IMO too old, not enough glove, not enough power anymore, not even against RHP.  Not enough split differential to make a strong platoon player either.

I guess he has the benefit of not being a liability at anything.

I suppose he could pull a Robbie Grossman and have a career year in his 30s...

There are other guys that I would prefer in that slot if I were pursuing a regular OF for less than $15M per year.

I am hoping for something big to happen so I keep checking my “sources” and it is such a letdown to see that instead of a headline about a big signing the main story right now on the Tigers mlb.com page is “Here’s One thing for every team to be thankful for.”

Noooooooo!

I’m like a kid who just wants to see his fancy shortstop package dressed out with a navy blue and orange ribbon under the Christmas tree even if it’s weeks before the big day and I’m being told instead to be “thankful” for whatever else it is I already have. @&$#!

When DD and Mr. Ilitch managed Christmas the world was a better place.

You have been promised an amazing shortstop.  It will occur.

I bet Baez doesn’t tell himself he’s the fifth-best shortstop on the market. That would strike me as completely out of character for him.

If you want to go by the numbers over the last 4 (3 full) seasons (2018-2021) by WAR the ranking would be.

by Fangraphs

Semien=19.3; Story=17.1; Baez=13.3; Correa=11.4; Seager=9.2

by BBref

Semien=20.3; Story=19.9; Baez=18.3; Correa=15.7; Seager=9.2

I didn't realize how much time Seager has missed.

There can't be 5 other teams willing to massively overpay for an elite FA SS.

I was being a bit sarcastic.

But, let’s have fun and say Baez returns to the Mets to play 2B, Semien signs with the White Sox to play 2B, and one of Seagar/Taylor stays with the Dodgers.  Suddenly the pickings have gotten slimmer, and two of the SSs are now at 2B.
