You can't do that kind of analysis when the data don't exist and in baseball there are enough situations that don't happen often enough to gather reliable statistics, and that is always going to be the case.

The Tigers won't be a consistent over 500 team until they start producing homegrown, cost controlled, first division position players. Supposedly they are integrating a bunch of analytics and technology in the minors that will start yielding results, but even that will take time. I'm not sure how Avila gets credit for these changes when he is about 10 years behind the rest of MLB.

because the computer says LEFT!/RIGHT!. I'm as big as anyone on the importance of handedness in baseball. To this day I will never understand why DD didn't seem to care about it at all. But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. One of the problems in working in complex systems is that you can easily start making mistakes based on measurement bias. We can measure platoon splits very accurately, Rdrs is kinda shaky, especially in less than a couple of seasons. So the temptation is strong to pay a lot of attention to what you measured and give shorter shrift to what you can't, even if on some level you realize it may be more important that you are giving it credit for. But you can answer your critiques by pointing at the numbers you have much easier than arguing your vague notions about the importance of what you have softer data about.

Absolutely no one is blaming Hinch because guys aren't hitting. We are just citing an instance in which what seemed to us as an extremely dumb lineup construction was responsible for a loss.

Agreed, it isn't good. If you know you are going to have trouble scoring runs, always use actual outfielders in the outfield, not shortstops who can't play short or catchers who can't catch. That loss is going to bug me for a long time.

Willi hasn't played enough for his fielding stats to mean much, but has clearly and grossly misjudged two balls out of a small number of chances. I not sure I want to wait until the stats prove out what we can see already - He's not good at judging fly balls.

Baddoo is no gold glover for sure but he is at least an outfielder.

But when they got it going and turned it around last year with the big club, it was all because of Hinch and the coaching staff. Too bad the old forum is gone, because the receipts would be easy to find. And when it happens again this year (because it probably will to a degree), it'll be because of Hinch. So now that things aren't going, why does Hinch avoid credit for that as well? It logically doesn't make sense. I like AJ and hope he manages here for a long time, but the fanbase sort of wants it both ways when they credit him in the good times and deflect blame from him during the bad.

There was a time last year when people were saying that the Renaissance began on the day that Hinch was hired, not just on the field but throughout the organization. Those front office changes, beefing up the analytics...Hinch's fingerprints were all over those. Well the team is arguably worse now, and suddenly Hinch isn't in the front office anymore.

I've seen fans here screaming for him but doesn't Hill strictly play CF? I suppose we could have had Hill in CF with Baddoo in LF. But Baddoo isn't much better in LF than our backup utility player, IMO.
