  1. We had a German shepherd when I was a kid, Fritz, great dog, you could fight him on the living room rug and he would snarl and almost bite you but not quite. He was definitely the alpha male dog in the neighbourhood but as far as people went, if we liked someone then he did too. This was back in the days when milk was delivered to your house, and bread too, and even dry cleaning. So the dry cleaning guy came once a week, the dog would wag his tail, no problem. Then the dry cleaning guy got sick, his replacement knocked on the door, and when Fritz saw him he went full ballistic fucking apeshit, he hated this guy so much he was barking and foaming at the mouth. He genuinely wanted to kill the guy, no question, and it took all of your strength to hold him back. This went on for a few weeks, then the regular guy came back. A couple of months later my Mom is reading the local paper and she says "hey look at this". In the courtroom reports there is a mention of the substitute driver, who got 90 days or something like that for passing bad paper. Fritz just knew instinctively that the guy was garbage.

  2. Just got my first 12 string guitar yesterday. I am in love. What the hell was I waiting for? A very different experience indeed.

  4. Agree with this. In short, you are either building or you are getting worse. But in the Tiger’s case what they really meant was only that the ‘tanking’ was over, which is a narrower meaning. 🙄

  5. 17 years after retirement, everyone who was a Tigers fan in the late 90's and early 00's loved or hated him. Probably both. I think it is time to have a retrospective visit to the one of the stars of a struggling franchise. Share your favorite Higgy memories (or the ones that made you despise him) here. From Wikipedia: Robert Leigh Higginson (born August 18, 1970) is an American former professional baseball outfielder who played his entire career for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Higginson made his major league debut in 1995, and played 130 games for the Tigers. He batted .320 in 1996 and .300 in 2000, scored over 100 runs in 2000 and drove in over 100 runs in 1997 and 2000. His career high of 30 home-runs came also in 2000. He twice led the Majors in outfield assists, and also led all American League left fielders in putouts in 2000 (305) and 2001 (321), although he never won a Gold Glove for his fielding. He was never named to an All-Star team. On June 30 and July 1, 1997, Higginson tied a major league record by hitting four home runs in four consecutive at bats (note, there were some walks interspersed) -- three on the first day, and then another in the first inning of the second day.[2] Higginson was named "Tiger of the Year" by the Detroit chapter of the BBWAA in 1997 and 2000. Since the award's inception in 1965, ten players have been named "Tiger of the Year" on multiple occasions: Higginson, Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera, Travis Fryman, Cecil Fielder, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, Ron LeFlore, and Denny McLain.[3][4] An elbow injury limited Higginson to 10 games in 2005, which ended up being his final season. He was granted free agency on October 31, and he retired at the age of 35. He ended his career never having played on a team that had a winning season. Higginson is also known for breaking up a no-hitter in the ninth inning and two out on a game in Toronto on September 27, 1998, with a pinch-hit home run.[5] The pitcher, future Hall of Famer Roy Halladay, was making his second ever appearance, and ended up winning his first career game, 2–1.

  11. I agree. Wouldn't it be nice to see her skewering banksters on the financial services committee? I think that would be grand, but no dice. From February; Why Katie Porter Isn’t on the House Financial Services Committee

  13. Considering that he is a highly compensated asset on a limited roster, the agent and player have greater responsibility to report his status to the organization than what has transpired. I see no flaw in the Tiger's treatment of him thus far.

  14. Rebuilding in the Tigers context is cutting costs to save money. If they are making trades to make themselves better in the future, that's not antithetical to the rebuild being over.

  15. Sure. But the upshot as I see it is that Carlson et. al will go to great lengths to blame literally anything and everything for these incidents *except* for the availability of weapons. And that is the context that I see his specious ramblings about privilege, social media, porn, video games, etc. It's not about identifying actual problems or anything like that... it's to muddy the waters to help in running out the clock on this particular news cycle.

  17. I don't get the rebuilding and not rebuilding themes. Teams should always be rebuilding from their current position to a better one. Turnover should be accepted and almost embraced and $$ is an asset that can always be redistributed. Grossman and Candy out and the 15 million saved can get better players. Relief pitcher gets hot then trade them off for a better return. Good teams develop those and Fetter/Hinch seem to be doing that which is the best development this year after RG. Constantly add players to help now and some to help later. If you find a true cornerstone then sure cement it in. We currently have one. So keep working Al. Start by resigning. That would fix your mistakes.

  18. We don’t know if Mayer wanted to play for the Tigers—it’s not unusual for a HS player to use the threat of college as leverage. I personally would have preferred Mayer, but it’s hardly a “debacle” that the Tigers took the best pitcher in the draft with their selection, after a few recent drafts where they focused on selecting position players. We saw with Manning that it can take longer for a high school pitcher to adjust to professional ball. The curve is probably greater for Jobe, who took up pitching later. I recall reading at the time of the draft that if a team had wanted to draft him as a SS, he would have likely gone in the third round, so he was fairly polished/accomplished there. I’m pulling for him—if he reaches his ceiling, he should exceed Mize or Skubal. We just have to be patient—I’m encouraged by what he’s doing getting his feet wet in A ball.

  21. So the Browns have now effectively used four first round picks, a third round pick, and a fourth round pick to get two fifth round picks and Jacoby Brissett as their starter for week 1 and indefinitely thereafter.

  22. I'd say it's in the best interest of the team to be sellers this year and get some prospects for guys in your bullpen.

  23. Higginson used to hangout in Royal Oak alot back when I was in my 20s and would frequent the bar scene so I've talked to him a few times. I remember one time we were shooting pool with him and it was in the middle of the 06 season, me and one of my friends said something to the effect of "does it bother you that the Tigers just so happened to be good right after you leave them?" and he responded with "I made 50 million dollars off them so I can't complain." lol atleast he was honest. But what was the kicker was a little bit later he says to me and one of my friends "You guys wanna shot?" so we go up to the bar and take a shot and he proceeds to only pay for his. At the time those Miller Lite "man card" commercials were popular so my friend was like "You ask us if we wanna shot and then you don't pay for it? Your man card is revoked." He got all pissy after that.

  25. I don’t have any memories of Bobby Higginson except at the very end of his career. I lived 2000 miles away, had no way and no time to follow a generally disappointing team from a distance, a demanding profession, 4 children, many other pressing priorities etc. The Tigers didn’t come back on my radar until 2004. I might as well have been Tom Hanks on a desert island from 1987 to 2004.

  26. 1. He personifies the worst era in Tigers baseball for me. 2. He famously was outspoken about our Moneyball trade with the A’s that sent Jeff Weaver packing. 3. His dad used to frequent the old Freep Tigers forum and stir up shit. 4. I’m pretty sure Bobby was using steroids and his steep decline occurred after he stopped. 5. He still remains one of my favorite baseball cards:

  27. What debacle? Not an Avila apologist, but Mayer isn’t exactly tearing up the minors. I’m OK with the Jobe-Madden-Pacheco troika right now,

  28. The show was really great. They just released some new material and the studio versions are great but on the mellower side and i was worried how that would translate live. They nailed it. I don't recall being that excited about hearing new music at a show. It takes me a bit to get acclimated. The new songs plus a couple of covers like Keep on Growing, and the staples like Midnight in Harlem. Great mix to stay fresh. Never the same show twice. That's how it should be. I saw the original setlist after the show and was glad they changed the encore to Space Captain. Afterwards we walked by the lot where the buses and trailers were. We stood around with a few others and Derek and Susan came over to chat and sign autograhs. They were beyond cool. I didn't get any autographs but talked to Susan about the Chicago shows and Derek about Bourbon. They easily could have ignored us as the gates/fences were covered with a tarp but one area had a gap we could see through. But they walked over. I saw feedback online about the Pine Knob show and it sounds like it was awesome. Bob Weir seemed excited about it. I would have been there if not for this.

  29. Just waiting for the vet to come by to euthanize my dog. It was a 5:30 appointment and he was right on time, thank goodness because waiting for it was agonizing. He was a border collie, he was 17 and he couldn't see very well and he really couldn't walk anymore - and that's no life for a dog, especially his breed. He was my best friend. He was my dog for 15 years and he was perfect. I wish I could clone him. I am very sad now that its over but also quite relieved. He couldn't continue like that, he tried to mask it, but I knew he was depressed. Dogs are incredible that way. My neighbors, who are from Mexico saw me carry his body out to the Pet Passages van and they gave me a shrub to plant where his grass hill to the porch is. A very nice gesture. Very thoughtful. The whole neighborhood liked him and more people knew his name than mine. When I take the hill down tomorrow they're gonna know he passed. I am sure they expected it was coming soon.
