It seems when a team can't produce home grown talent and has issues keeping players healthy and botching rehabs and the first thing the new guy does is overhaul the amateur scouting department and training staff, it's hard to say nothing has been done.8 points

There isn't a single person on this board who isn't tired of the rebuild.3 points

Mets still need some relief help as well. Really, along with Mark Vientos, I'd be asking about Brett Baty... he bats left handed and if they have Correa manning the hot corner now, it's hard to see where he fits into the plans. And honestly he'd have a legit shot at being an opening day starter on this team. Not sure if it's possible, but if they took on McCann and somehow could pry loose a guy like that, I'd be a fan3 points

And it gives the War Department more money than they were asking for. Imagine that! Raytheon and Northrup Grumman says thanks Santa (that would be we the taxpayers). More insanity by insane people.2 points

Why would I voice concern over not signing players I never expected them to sign?2 points
-
It really should go without saying that everyone who is a Tigers fan hates the situation they are in and wants to be out of it. But for whatever reason, not flying off the handle every time a free agent is signed by a team not named the Detroit Tigers gets perceived as not caring. The reality is that people can want the situation to end while disagreeing with the best way for it to end.2 points

Honest question: can you express in detail who you would have signed that has gone off the board thus far, and at what price/years. Thanks.2 points

Leagues; the NFL, MLB, NBA, are single entities competing for the entertainment dollar. Teams are franchises of such entities. The overall health of the entity is dependent on each team having similar opportunity to be competitive, not a system like relegation, where there are a few perennial haves, and a lot of struggling have nots with basically no chance.2 points

So is nothing really happening? It’s so bad we’re talking about McCann? Following this team is like watching grass grow. In the winter. Not a hot stove, but a cold stove? The Lions are more interesting than the Tigers? My iPhone is so bored with things that when I tried to tap in the address to this site it automatically tried to send me the Motownsports. My damn phone even forgot to care. I’ve been reduced watching the Premier League, which was sadly on hiatus due to the World Cup, but which at least has the attraction of only taking two hours instead of four. I haven’t been this apathetic in years. I’m watching YouTube videos of people walking in the rain in Japan because it’s more interesting.2 points

I think it will be for many teams. I just hope we learned the painful lesson with Miggy.1 point

If people are going to blame DC for losing games, how about some credit for winning games? Fake punt from their own 25 in a 7-point game against the division leader? If they get that wrong, the Lions may have lost the game.1 point

Actually I am ok with the moves so far for the MLB team: Boyd, Lorenzen, Ibanez and even Feliciano (also Malloy). The upper management has improved it would seem along with scouting, player development, conditioning, the hitting philosophy and other areas where there is potentially upgraded personnel coming aboard. My concerns, and it may be early still, are with the depth of the MLB team. Injuries are going to happen. Right now we do not even have a complete team to put on the field. When (not if) an injury or two occurs we currently have no depth. I actually do think the team has a chance to still be decent - provided some smart moves are made. We are not in a strong division really. Two years ago we came on strong and were thought to be turning the corner (then injuries and down years took place). No one gave Cleveland a chance at this time last year and for that matter well on into May - but it happened. There is some time still. Some players to had - be it FA and/or trade. However, if the mindset is to 'Come to Detroit to get better' that IMHO does not attract many 'position' players (aka Comerica Park, listen to Lorenzan Presser). Veterans know what coaches are for. Many hire their own personal coaches in several areas. Not every player need be 24 or under for this team to get better. If that were the case then just follow minor league teams - but the Tigers are a MLB team. BTW, we will get even more 'prospect' talent in the next draft, ex 3 picks in the top 46? We just have to start developing players (esp positional) regardless and that should be perhaps the organization's main focus - but many of us would not mind a few more MLB players as well along the way.1 point

Agree the NCAA will do nothing. Disagree on Michigan. Old Michigan would cry nobody is following the rules. New Michigan led by Urban Manuel is saying fuck it, we can play that game too. Transfers in from Nebraska and Coastal Carolina, doing nothing Mazi Smith, these are all things that never would’ve happened before. It’s a new time at Schembechler Hall.1 point

its not an "sol" thing to think its unlikely the lions will win 4 straight or 3 out of 4 to close the season, its more an acknowledgment of how hard that is to do in the nfl. most nfl games are decided on thin margins, veritable coin flips. the odds are in one of the last three games the lions will lose the coin flip. otoh, it was similarly unlikely they would win 6 of their last 7. and they did it. so who knows?1 point

Spot on. I would argue that all the angst about the offense crowds out how the injuries to the young pitchers, particularly Skubal, impacts their outlook for next year. And why, despite the precieved strength of the group over the offense, they needed to add a couple of starters on short term deals.1 point

No season is a lost season before it starts. 2021 was considered lost by May 1 and look what happened. It takes a whole lot of ifs, but if Meadows and Baez revert to near career norms and Tork hits like he did through 3 levels of the minors, Greene improves, 1 of Baddoo or Carpenter progresses and Schoop, Kreidler, Lipscious, or Malloy is league average offensively, suddenly the offense doesn't look so bad. You can go through the pitching staff the same way. Is it likely? No, but the offseason isn't close to over and there is a path, albeit a very, very, extremely miniscule path, if no further moves were made. Best of all, we still play in one of the worst divisions in baseball.1 point
-
I dont know if it's a lost season or not.... they play in the worst division in the sport after all, so may be there is a tail risk they can win it if a lot of things go right. The point I'm continually trying to make here is that if it doesn't end up a lost season and they start to progress toward or even past .500, it's largely gonna be because of improvements on the roster as it already exists. It wouldn't because of individual free agent signings, and certainly not someone on the level of Brandon Drury1 point

If you are not going to game, just watching on TV and are so upset you aren't willing to give the new FO even the who offseason before writing them off for not picking up free agents they weren't after anyway, why don't you root for the Mets or another team that is doing what you want? I totally get the frustration of the past seasons, but we never realistically were going to sign the vast majority of the players who are off the market, nor should we have. There are many ways to build the team and we are roughly 1 month into the offseason. I doubt many of the players Harris has targeted are now unavailable. And saying Illitch doesn't care is absurd also IMO as last offseason he was more than willing to spend when it looked like a SS, a starter, and a LF could take the team from 77 wins to playoff contention.1 point

Baseball is my sport and the Tigers are my team. And I'm not quitting them and jumping on someone else's bandwagon. Beside that, I am interested in longer term progression of this team and it's young players. And I am interested to see what impact the new PBO has on the team going forward. I understand the angst that everyone has about where they are at and frankly share it. But the new PBO deserves more than three months before throwing him to the wolves.1 point

I know you mean Billion but the way Chris treats this team who knows. And I'm not asking for us to go after Aaron Judge or Carlos Correa (Mr. 110 games a year), but can we be in on some band-aid players? Anyone? You know, while we wait for future Hall Of Famer Colt Keith to develop? Who replaces Castro. Andy Ibanez? Wow. exciting. Oh, the recongizing the strike zone thing.... Harold Castro had a better OBP than Ibanez. 8 years of this and there is no end in sight. The Lions carry the hopes of this city for sports..............they've still got 3 weeks to tear our hearts out too.1 point

If you own a sports team, you should care about winning. One of the richest owners in the game and this guy doesn't even try. He doesn't even know half or most of the players on his own team. I'm just pissed off. Winter is here, our team is terrible and as bad as he was last year, Harold Castro was one of our most clutch hitters and we don't really have any third basemen on this roster. We have guys who can play third, but they are not actual third basemen............after years of high drafts, nothing close to being ready. And I don't care to hear about someone from at West Michigan who is probably 2 years away and has a .907 fielding pct in the minors.1 point

There was a lot of speculation yesterday on Twitter that Correa’s physical was a smokescreen and that he was getting cold feet and didn’t want to go forward with the contract with SF. If you’ll recall, Cohen had said earlier in the week that they were late getting to Correa to negotiate so he had put the interest out there. Another player spurns SF.1 point

And somehow get them to take Soto in the deal? Merry Christmas to me.1 point

I'd rather see the players make the money than have it all go to the owners. Everything that is done to structure pro sports leagues is done to help owners make profits. It has nothing to do with competitiveness or fairness. In the end, they just put everyone in the playoffs and everbody is happy.1 point

I think that relegation works in English football because there are 92 clubs independent of each other in the first 4 levels, and literally thousands of clubs at levels 5 and below. Theoretically they could all advance to the premiership. There is not anything in North American pro sports that is analogous to that.1 point

It's funny: we all ended the Avila era wanting to run him out on a rail, and yet we're still really conditioned to expect them to do the things that he would have done and get anxious when things develop differently under the new regime.1 point

I dont think they are over pays. One year contracts are generally not a problem, so the deals for Boyd and Lorenzon are OK. I don't really believe the stories that the Tigers saw something in them that other teams didn't see though. They are both pitchers capable are getting hot for a half season and making themselves marketable at the deadline.1 point
