  2. FWIW, Fangraphs did an article a few years ago about at which point various stats attain enough stablization to basically call it a skill and not just luck. Here’s where they came out on that back then: “Stabilization” Points for Offense Statistics: 60 PA: Strikeout rate 120 PA: Walk rate 240 PA: HBP rate 290 PA: Single rate 1610 PA: XBH rate 170 PA: HR rate 910 AB: AVG 460 PA: OBP 320 AB: SLG 160 AB: ISO 80 BIP: GB rate 80 BIP: FB rate 600 BIP: LD rate 50 FBs: HR per FB 820 BIP: BABIP “Stabilization” Points for Pitching Statistics: 70 BF: Strikeout rate 170 BF: Walk rate 640 BF: HBP rate 670 BF: Single rate 1450 BF: XBH rate 1320 BF: HR rate 630 BF: AVG 540 BF: OBP 550 AB: SLG 630 AB: ISO 70 BIP: GB rate 70 BIP: FB rate 650 BIP: LD rate 400 FB: HR per FB 2000 BIP: BABIP This is from 2015 but I would guess the numbers are pretty similar now. I would also think that barrels would be similar to fly ball rate on stabilization.

  3. If the Lions play next season like they did after the 1-6, with more depth at defense and a healthy Goff all season, they could win 11-14 games.............That's not unrealistic

  4. Not going to lie, I want to see McCaffery at QB. I imagine it would be similar to having Justin Fields at QB.

  6. Agree. I think this is also an underrated aspect. The old saw about hitting being 'contagious' has a certain kernel of truth to it. It's a lot easier to face pitchers that are stressed, have thrown a lot of pitches in an inning, and are working out of the stretch with men on base. The tigers O managed to fall to a point so low it became synergistically worse for everyone on the team collectively.

  7. which is the wierd part. Watching him he just looked late, but I don't think it's because he doesn't have the bat speed, my guess is it's between his ears - you wonder if it isn't just a matter of reaching a comfort level where he can relax, grip it and rip it. Other's have commented that Tork seems to have to adjust at each level and for whatever reason he got out of sync out of the gate in Det in April and it didn't happen. It was notable it only took him a couple of weeks at Toledo to pick it up again. And one of the yhings that left me a little puzzled with Hinch. At one point his comment about Tork was "there are too many people in his ear." Well isn't it one of a manager's jobs to try to manage who is in his ear? I suppose he could have been talking about advice coming from outside the org, but in any case I thought it was odd at the time.

  9. I will save us all some time and lay out what is going to happen the next 10 months. Knox, McGruder, and Joseph win us some meaningless games in March. We end up with the 4th worst record. We drop to 9th in the lottery. A new head coach is hired. We all go on about what a great hire he is. None of us knew his name before he was hired. We draft a kid at #9 none of us have ever seen play for one minute. After the introductory press conference we all say, "I don't know what it is about <9th draft pick> but he really seems to have the it factor." We end the post with Detroit vs Everyone or whatever T-Shirt slogan is popular at the time. <9th draft pick> has a mediocre summer league. But in one of the games he goes off for 22 points while being guarded by the 5'11" third string Venezuelan national team player. Jordan/Wilt/Lebron comps flood the board. Change the comps to Bird/Luka if <9th draft pick> is white. Between summer league and training camp someone will post a tweet showing <9th draft pick> hitting 5 jumpers. We will rave about his jumper looking better in an empty gym with no defenders. IG or Tik Tok is also acceptable here. <9th draft pick> will have an OK pre season showing a few things, but overall rather average. And during the third preseason game you swear you saw a blue glowing hologram image of Greg Monroe, Stanley Johnson, and Brandon Knight hoovering over the LCA court, sort of like Yoda and Obi Wan. I post the 2024 draft thread before the end of the third quarter of game #1.

  10. I think one of the things to keep in mind regarding Greene and Torkelson is how awful the Tigers' offense was as a whole last season. Granted, the lineup wasn't exactly filled with quality major league hitters, especially later in the season. But given that environment, its probably tough for rookies (one who missed a chunk of the early season due to injury, the other who doesn't have much professional experience at all) to perform well at the plate. The Tigers fired one hitting coach and reassigned the other. That's probably more than just a cosmetic move by a new front office. I think there's some cause for concern given the previous regime and the questionable prospect development. Both were drafted where they were expected to go. Greene was considered a top tier prospect and Torkelson was pretty much the top prospect, right? I would think both are still young enough that with the correct instruction, they can still have good careers. We've seen the flashes from Greene while in Detroit. Torkelson had a pretty darn good 2021 season and 2022 was tough. Both are still in their early 20s, so they're still learning the game. 2022 was frustrating as hell, but I'm still optimistic for both.

  12. Duren is showing some really encouraging signs on defense. That block on Fernando tonight was impressive. There was a similar block against NJ where he was called for a bs foul. He's going strait up in a manner that you want you to see to avoid fouling. Averaging a block and steal per game in January.

  18. Greene is a quality CF. If he grows into an 800 OPS we should be more than happy. If Tork does't get to 900 as a 1B it will be a major disappointment. So there is that.

  19. maybe - or you just make them more embattled. The job sucks. We fix that and maybe we draw a different set of people into the job? For about 100 yrs now we've tried to police America's underclasses into submission. Pretty abject failure. Maybe we just start making a serious attempt to get people out of the underclasses?

  20. I do think thre are some fans who have overstated Greene's performance last year, but that might be because the rest of the team was so horrible. I will say though that Greene did significantly better than Torkelson offensively .

  21. I dont think Harris views this as a rebuild... my opinion is that he looks at the roster and sees a mix of players who underperformed their career statistics (perhaps unstainably), young players who are capable of performing better than they did in their first year and a few guys who are effectively free agents who didn't contribute at all to last year's club (ie. Meadows, Turnbull, Rogers) and thinks that the roster, with improvements to pitching and defense, are capable of outperforming expectations. Not saying he's right or wrong, but that's the logic of the moves imo. Also, I'm not sure that with the trades of Soto or Jimenez, that I would say this offseason had a "lack of activity". In terms of signing established Wil Myers types it was, but he's leveraged the Tigers assets as best as he can. And there are a decent amount of teams, including some big boys like the Red Sox or Dodgers, who one can argue have actually done less.

  22. Sounds like Diamond Sports Group is set to miss an interest payment in February. That is the subsidiary of Sinclair that operates Bally Sports. This would trigger a 30 day grace period and then chapter 11 comes right after. Their second tier debt, about $5B, is trading at 10 cents on the dollar. That is the debt that basically has no shot of being paid back in bankruptcy. The article said there are two options in bankruptcy. All TV contracts with the MLB, NHL, and NBA disappear and rights are open for bidding again. Or the creditors take large equity positions in lieu of payments and basically become owners.

  24. I bet the NHL the most. It's Sinclair isn't it? Bally's is just the "sponsor" so to speak. Bally's pays Sinclair to brand it Bally's Sports. Sinclair doesn't want you to know it's Sinclair. that's all I will say about that.
