  1. Fidrych was one of a kind. There will never be another one like him. He was a unique individual, but part of what made him special is that nobody knew who he was until he started pitching in Detroit. Today, we would have analyzed him from the day he was drafted. We would have known everything about him and placed him on various prospect lists. When was in Detroit, we would haved worried about his low K rate and worried about him getting hurt with the high innings pitched totals. Nobody cared about that stuff back then. Who knows what social media would be saying about him? The Bird phenomenon just wouldn't be the same today. I am so glad we were able to experience it when we did.

  5. I got his autograph at a Whitecaps game. I was absolutely thrilled and said to him "thank you for doing this" and he said "thank you for still caring". Somewhere I have a picture of me walking away from the autograph table with a huge smile on my face. It was a highlight reel moment in my life.

  9. Yep, so much entertainment to go along with the sheer love of the game that most of us share. They were not good per say, but much more entertaining than '74 & '75. They also had All Stars RLeFlore and RStaub. SP Dave Roberts was decent and John Hiller quite good out of the BP. They brought up Jason Thompson and his 'roof top' homers. Horton, Stanley & Freehan was still on the team and productive when healthy. A gold glove caliber 3B in Aurelio Rodriguez. The 'Bird' made it magical and easy to remember. As one poster said, today it would be a bit different. Yet, regardless we enjoyed it. It was a very memorable year for Tiger baseball.

  12. When an interviewer in the 90s said his career was tragic, Fidrych corrected him and said "Tragic? I started an All-Star Game, it was great". He wasn't a phony, it wasn't an act, he was just a kid that was as wowed as we were. I still remember his first start against Cleveland and how fast the game was over. He got the ball and it was like it was giving him electric shocks and he had to get rid of it right away. I don't think he got cheated, I think the rest of us did, I think baseball did.

  13. I got Fidrych's autograph at Gibralter one year. They were free. Very long line and it wasn't moving fast. Once I got up there I realized why. The guy was so friendly and was talking to everyone like it was a cousin he hadn't seen in 7 years. This was before camera phones so I can imagine how long that would have been if everybody wanted a picture.

  14. Well, Cabrera is blocking more qualified baseball players. That's just simply the truth once you strip away the emotion of what might have done in the past. Torkelson is connecting well with the ball in camp. He hit the ball hard last season, BABIP hurt him a bit. He's going to be fine this season.

  15. I absolutely wasn’t complaining. You were the one complaining about Miggy and that he was blocking what I deem to be our non-prospects. Actually, I don’t think anyone is being blocked. I used the pitchers as potentially a closer example of it than the guy taking up the very last roster space. Sadly, I think we all will have to enjoy a lot of flailing this year. I really hope that Miggy is much worse than Tork but I think there’s a real chance that Spencer he takes full control of the scepter of Tiger fan anger before the end of the year.

  16. There is also one thing I agree with Hongbit on: We are not playing for 2023, we are playing for 2024. Miggy doesn't matter in that regard, nor do wins/ losses this year. What matters is we fix all our broken players and try to identify who can be a part of a competitive/ playoff team next year. Fix Mize, Skubal and Torkenson. Fix Baez (if he sticks with us next year), Meadows and E-Rod (same as Baez, see if he sticks for the remainder of his contract). If Baez and E-Rod are hot at the deadline, and adamant about opting out, trade them for other futures. Help Greene & Manning to improve their games/ reach higher levels. See what kind of players Vierling/ Maton/ Carpenter/ Parker/ Wentz/ Brieske are... are they pieces of the team? As is? Or does Brieske get pushed to the BP? Same with Faedo... is he a starter/ reliever/ or someone to move on from? How high this year do Madden and Flores rise? Is Wenceel a part of the future? Schoop surely isn't. These and many other questions are the important issues this year. Not wins & losses. To me.

  18. I wasn't realy joking. Cabrera was a legend for 9 years which was a lot of fun. He's been an old out of shape replacement level DH for 6 years which is frustrating.

  23. Regarding Boyd and Lorenzen, alex said it best earlier in the thread - modern pitching rotations needs to be 8 or 9 deep. David Cone said something to that effect on a Yankees ST broadcast involving the Tigers last year, and little did we know that the 2022 Detroit Tigers would learn that lesson in spades. So no, Matt Boyd and Michael Lorenzen aren't blocking anyone.... they are ensuring that guys that were getting #4/#5 type starts last year are #7/8 on the depth chart. And subsequently helping to ensure that as injuries happen, and they will, they won't be turning to the Drew Hutchison's, Ty Alexander's and Derek Norris's of the world to cover starts.

  24. LOL - basic ignorance here. Ford divided the business and is making large investments on the 'e' side to build a sales capacity. You will lose money on your balance sheet when you are investing to build new capacity to make money later. Anyone who takes this as an indictment of weakness at Ford is ignorant of how you actually make money in the world. And notice that their legacy profits more than support their 'e' side investment level so they have maintained their overall financial health. This is economically ignorant trolling. I would note that investors don't seem to be much worried, overall F has pretty much tracked the S&P over the last couple of years.

  26. I don't know if you pulled 7 out of nowhere or if you were dialed in with that. But his last 6 seasons have been crap and this season won't be much better. As far as showing respect, sure, he had a great career. Hall of fame, first ballot. Lots of great memories. But he's completely worthless on an active roster. People bag on Hinch for moving position players around and searching for interchangeability. But he has to in part because Cabrera creates a roster crunch.

  27. Even better: I'm pushing the IGNORE button:

  28. Yes, have said it before and will say it again: Depth on the roster this day and age is of utmost importance. Gone are the days of even 3 SPs on a team pitching 200 innings. You need 8-10 SPs today ready for 150 IP each. Also gone are the days of a team with 6-7 position players starting 150+ games each. We remember when we could rattle off good teams starting lineups. Because of inevitable injuries and the league (and union) not quite up to snuff in understanding the workloads that today's players endure on their bodies (conditioning big time, practice time and the games, etc.) this will be the case (with occasional outliers) for awhile. IMHO, a few lesser overall games on the schedule (ex 150-155 maybe), more players on the roster (I would say 27-28, yet it took sooo long to get it to 26!!), more days off in season (ex scheduled 7 inning DHs, maybe 2-3 per team) and maybe a few other tweaks would help. We all want to see the star players and the quality of the games not compromised - there will need to be some changes in the future. All IMHO, of course.

  31. One of the obvious things that I have yet to hear anyone stress is that the deposit limit was at 100K in 1980. If you apply the CPI to that number it means it should have been increased to ~400K by now. A too low insurance limit is another thing drives up the % of uninsured customers. By design the insurance limit is *supposed* to cover *most* - i.e. any average, depositor at your average bank.

  32. There’s nobody that has any part in our plans for the future whose development would benefit from being the last guy on the bench. They would be better off playing every day in Toledo. If we are being honest about blocking, Matt Boyd and Michael Lorenzen are probably blocking future talent more than Miggy. They are roster fillers and won’t be part of the long term plans in a few years. There are guys in Toledo or Erie that very well could be part of the future rotation that may benefit from pitching up here every 5th day. I’m not suggesting this idea at all but blocking only really matters if you have a bunch of real prospects that could benefit more from playing in the show.

  33. Disagree. If Cabrera didn't have a $30M salary this season, he wouldn't be on a MLB roster. He cannot hit well. He cannot play defense at all. He cannot run well. There will be baseball players in Toledo that are better than Cabrera. Now, you may not personally give a rip about those guys in Toledo, but to say he isn't blocking anyone is completely false.

  35. They are not platooning Riley Greene. Only time he doesn't play is if he's hurting or if he needs a day off and since he's not even 23, I doubt he'll need too many days off. He's a do-or-die player I'll play Green, cf a fan favorite already, but is he a leadoff hitter? well, they have nobody else Meadows, rf, he still gets on base, hopefully he finds it again, he'd make a huge differece if he did Baez, ss yep, a dog poop season in 2022, but still, easily the most dangerous hitter on the team Cabrera, dh yep, still at cleanup. Carpenter takes this slot when Miggy goes on the DL Haase, c, maybe I have him a little high, but when he's right, he's good Torkelson, 1b, I hope he's good enough to hit cleanup at some point Maton, 3b, hits the ball hard, draws more walks than most on the team and no shift will help him. Schoop, 2b, it just feels like every AB for him is a missed opportunity to see a future player Baddoo, lf, I don't think he should be on the team over Carpenter, but they need some speed somewhere Bench: Rogers, Vierling, Ibanez, Kriedler. Nevin replaces Ibanez when he gets healthy. Kerry Carpenter starts in Toledo, where he'll get everyday ABs. Toledo's lineup will be worth following. Keeping an eye on Malloy and Lipcius Maybe Schoop starts out hot and the Dodgers trade a keg of beer for him.

  36. Baikanur is an excellent example of that. Russia is losing its main Space Launch pad. I don't think they have the Kamchatka launch pad working yet either, so they may also be losing their ONLY space launch pad. Another good example of just how screwed Russia is... is Xi's visit. It was basically: "Thank you for giving me everything I wanted Vlad... oh, and I'm giving you NOTHING that you wanted, except a few words." Russia is now officially a vassal state of China. A gas station at China's preferred price. AND Vlad gave western oil and gas equipment left in Siberia, to China. AND Vlad invited China IN to Siberia to direct agricultural directions/ investments there. I mean... does Vlad even realize he invited a wolf into his chicken house? The desperate moves of a drowning man and country, I guess, is the answer to all of this...

  38. I dig the pitch clock. A game like last night's doesn't seem to drag because there is constant level of intensity that won't exist in most regular season games.

  39. I know he has to be on the team because that is just the way it is, but he does block people by limiting roster flexibility. They have a lot of role players who will be in various platoons and match-ups and having an extra player that can play in the field would help.

  44. Verlander will go in as Verlander. He has done enough with both franchises so that each can claim him as their own. I am very much into baseball history and the hall of fame but I don't even think about whar cap players have on their plaque. I think of the Hall of Fame as an individual honor rather than a team honor.
