Yup. And the the thing with the draft is that there is such a high degree of crapshoot and the time lag to the MLB level payoff of drafting & developing. Heck, Torkelson probably got rushed up and now there are some that think he's a bust after fewer than 700 PAs and before the age of 24.3 points

that was my point. He's had the equivalent of about 3 1/2 full seasons after HS to develop into a major league hitter when you count college, minors, and majors.2 points

A plain reading of the NT would tell you that 1st person to go 'preach' about Jesus to others was the Samaritan woman at the well, who went and told her town about him - long before he commissioned any man to do the same.2 points

French is an interesting dude; nice guy for sure; but he childishly thinks that the GOP is about to have a come to Jesus moment (any day now!) when they realize, much to their shock and dismay, that Trump is a bad guy; he talks about a political party that does not exist anymore2 points

The Capitalist class knows that if the Dems win 2024 marginal and corporate tax rates are going up, and since a Biden win probably carries Congress, we are going to get the full court press against Biden till then as the result, . They don't really care about the cultural issues and they don't really like Trump (e.g. Koch is going to spend primary money against Trump), but the sure foreknowledge that a Biden win is going to hit them in the wallet means nothing else matters.2 points

He had a great college career even if cut short a bit by COVID. But once college ended, he was done for 2020. Zipped through the minors with no hint of struggle in 2021. He looked ready for the part. At least based on the results lines. But then struggles in 2022, and I would suggest he wasn’t what he probably should have been in Toledo when he was sent down for a tune up. And keep in mind the team wide the Tigers suffered last season, too. Probably not the most ideal environment for a rookie, even a highly touted prospect. It’s probably the first time he’s been through something like that on a baseball field. He’s got stuff to work on. Hopefully he powers through them and becomes the cornerstone that we hoped he’d be when he was drafted.1 point

I have no idea if being on Hard Knocks is or isn't a distraction for the team but if the coaches don't think it's a problem, I'd love to see it. Lions should negotiate. Rescind Jamo's suspension and we'll do it.1 point

Zepo Marx, in the movie "Horse Feathers" famously said, "To have a good football team, you have to have good football players." To which Groucho replied, "I think you're on to something." That same sentiment applies to baseball.1 point

I see it as all a matter of degree. The human mind always wants to fit things into some kind of consistency. It's basically an analogy machine - sorting which things do or don't match this, and if not must match up with that. On the other hand, in the physical reality in which we exist, all defined relationships breakdown at boundaries. At one end, matter completely disappeares as you zoom into fine enough grain, while at the other end the Universe itself dissolves into contradiction at the first contemplation of its boundary. Between those limits the human mind spends its time trying to put things in boxes. Nothing ever quite fits in the boxes perfectly, but some things fit much better than others, and many things do fit at least well enough to have allowed humanity to understand enough to survive up to the present. But the limits of appliation of every human concept are always still there at all the edges, waiting for the unsuspecting to fall off the edge into error and failure, and also engendering the same terror that bedeviled 15th century sailors that should they get too far away from the seas of their comfortable beliefs, they would either land themselves on dangerous terra incognita, or worse, fall off the edge of the world.1 point

There are too many of them out there in this same situation. And here is the irony: They want to dismiss GOP-Facism as abberation instead of inevitable consequene of underlying principle, because to throw those underlying political principles overboard is to jettison the exact same kind of comfortable certitude in political understanding that French argues in his column does need to be resisted in religious understanding.1 point

I never got why it was ok for players to play fantasy football. Like I heard commentators say during the game stuff like "I talked to player x during the game and he has player y(on the opposing team) on his fantasy team" Like even if it's a free league it still feels like a conflict of interest since competitive people will take even free leagues seriously.1 point

To quote Ben Folds "Some producer with computer mixes all my sh*tty tracks" You don't even really need to play a musical instrument to make a record anymore. And it's obvious. Tonight in Ann Arbor I introduced a young lady named Madison McFerrin onto the stage. She's a REAL talent. Beautiful voice, melodic songs. Radio probably won't play it unless she has a guest rap artist on it. Reminds me a little of Corinne Bailey Rae, who is outstanding (never got much radio play), but Madison has some Brazilian flourishes in her sound (at least she does live).1 point

I was thinking that too that if Amen drops to the Pistons that can open up a plethora of trade options not too dissimilar to Ivey last draft when the trade offers came flooding in (Knicks in particular). Of course, there was a fit for Ivey on the roster with only Cade in the backcourt so it made more sense to just take him but in this case, they could really weaponize Amen's trade value and get a haul. I'm looking at teams with multiple 1sts like Indiana and Utah. Maybe the Pistons take him just because he'd be the top talent on the board but, like you, I don't see a fit whatsoever. Personally, I'm not buying any of these smokescreens of Whitmore jumping into the top 4 and I'm not even buying all the Miller to Charlotte smoke but who knows? Last year it was widely anticipated that Jabari Smith was going 1st and Banchero was going 3rd so, outside of Wemby going 1, it's up in the air.1 point

I think it is borderline cruel for the governing body of collegiate athletics to celebrate someone’s mistake like this. If the guy had hit a legit homer that would have been all right, but this? Not cool imho1 point

The new Jason Isbell album Weathervanes has dropped. I haven't given it a full listen yet but am excited to do so very soon. As a huge fan of Jason's, I recognize that there will never be an album that compares to his 2012 album Southeastern. So I don't hold the expectation that he needs to record a Southeastern 2.0 type of album and don't expect this album to be that. His Southeastern album was deeply personal and was produced as he was coming out of a very dark time of his life. So I judge each album on its own merits and for their own artistic value and songwriting. And Isbell offers a lot of artistic value and always incredible song writing. I truly do believe he is the greatest songwriter of our times. The modern day John Prine, Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie. I can't wait to dive into Weathervanes this week. One of my favorite music blogs/websites, Saving Country Music, has a nice review up on the Weathervanes album. Saving Country Music Weathervanes Review1 point

Come next year we may feature a lineup that has all top 5 picks with Cade, Ivey, Bagley, Wiseman and the 5th pick this year. And yes it will probably still be terrible.1 point

They are called Vignette ads. Its a new ad format that is becoming more common on websites. Sorry, but they help pay for the expense of running this website. From Google Adsense: Vignette ads are full-screen ads that appear between page loads. Vignettes are displayed when the user leaves a page, rather than when they arrive on one, so the user doesn’t have to wait for them to load. We (Google) limit the number of vignettes per user to maintain a good user experience.1 point
