I’ve told this story before, but the MNF Fidrych game was truly one of the most memorable days of my childhood. Last day of school, 3rd grade or Grade 3, had been the Friday before. I was turning 9 in two days so we held my birthday party in the lower deck in left with Family Night tickets. My parents, a couple of uncles, a few of my friends. I was a baseball nut/nerd then so knew all about Fidrych’s progression over the past two months and so was excited that he was the starter. But having been to weeknight games several times in the past, we were expecting a crowd of 20,000 or so. When we got there and saw our normal parking lots full and then the throngs walking over the pedestrian covered overpasses we were stunned. But boy did that ratchet up the excitement. For a few minutes we were worried that the game was sold out, as that was the rumour, but managed to buy tickets. I remember almost everything about that night. Especially the curtain call. Went to many other Fidrych starts in 1976 and 1977, I wish more radio or TV broadcasts of his starts were available.5 points

If you’ve never seen Mark Fidrych pitch or seen a 70’s era baseball game, watch at least the first couple of innings. LeFlore, Staub, Jason Thompson, Aurelio Rodriguez. Heck, even Mickey Stanley. Players introducing themselves, Bob Eucker on the mic, 70’s era commercials. I was 10 years old and this was everything to me. Pure gold. Enjoy5 points

The Upper Peninsula has historically fielded a number of hardball teams every year for decades. Guys in their twenties, thirties and a few in their forties would form travel teams and play out their baseball fantasies in front of avid fans. Back when I was in my forties or fifties, Felch (near Iron Mountain) had a great team. They had a Sunday game scheduled and word was that former Tigers John Hiller, who played regularly for Felch, had invited Fydrich to pitch for Felch. My cousin and I, not really expecting that to be true, took a ride down there to catch the game. I don't recall the score but Felch won and that's the only time I saw "The Bird" live. It wasn't long after his major league career was over and his "stuff" was still pretty good.2 points

The one area where Biden hurts himself is his weakened speaking skills which came with age. For someone whose job involves a lot of communication, he really has a difficult time communicating and I am not talking about the out of context "dementia clips" posts by conservatives.2 points

Manning for Nolan Gorman. Maybe that's a Winter trade, but could work. 4 years of Manning for 5 years of Gorman. Put him back at 3B if you think Keith can make it at 2B.2 points

The thing about rumors or leaks is that they're usually out there for a reason.... which speaks to how often they can be inaccurate.1 point

Wow, what a night! I had one of the most memorable nights of my baseball fandom just watching TV. It must have been amazing to actually be there. The beginning of summer vacation enhances everything. I had just finished 8th grade and 8th grade sucked, so I'm sure that added to it.1 point

And I would prefer one Top-3 from an Org, one top-20-25 in an Org... and then the 3rd can be whatever lottery ticket is allowed...1 point

Turnbull is one of those guys who, I wonder whether his state of mind affects his state of play more than average.1 point

Haase doesn't belong in the OF. He's a backup catcher. If Hinch is that hard up for a RH hitting outfielder, they shouldn't have released Marisnick. Never should have brought up Maton.1 point

That may be true, but I think it applies more in the short term than the long term. When building for the future, I favor position players over pitchers. If you are all in to win right now, then it's a different story. I do want the Tigers to try to be competitive next year, but they are still at the point where any major move would need to help them more in 3 years than right now.1 point

but isn't it better to have holes in the rotation, if there are multiple FA options available this winter? and players could be looking for a Lorenzen-type rebound? the position players - again - this winter are very scarce, and - again - Comerica is not going to be seen as a preferred destination for many hitters.1 point

Agreed. It 'may' be a sellers market to an extent. Yet, will teams like Baltimore, Cincy, etc. go for it and break there previously practiced approaches? However, even an extension may not be a bad idea for one of the SPs. With said I hope they do not settle on 'volume' returns as was mentioned earlier here (had enough of that with previous deals/regime) and go more for higher end types - even if we have to put in a prospect/RP or two (not our top prospect guys) - in order to get that type of return.1 point

The Gutterballs dream sequence where The Dude is floating under the Bowling Pin dancers made Bridges nervous because he was going to have to look up the ladies' skirts and he felt kind of creepy about it. So what did the Coen's do? They invited his wife to come onto the set that day without telling him. LOL.1 point

and the Dude is Jeff Dowd. There was a Big Lebowski pop up store in Baltimore by the Inner Harbor and one day Jeff Bridges stopped by..........so he went behind the counter and started working it as The Dude, refusing to break character. I don't know how long he stayed, but could you imagine stumbling into that?1 point

How do they play in those wooden shoes? [edit: I intended to make this about how when I was put into holding in a jail in Texas -- for speeding while my car had a Michigan license plate -- i witnessed that the general population prisoners had wooden clogs. I now see that isn't what happens anymore because there is a special "inmate shoe company" that makes cheap clogs for them which do not include metal shanks. Basically, the Texas penal system is gross]1 point

If you watched the TV series Fargo, there are TONS of Coen callbacks, but one of them is when an elevator door opens and you look down the hallway and its a total Barton Fink nod.1 point

You have the timeline wrong. They gave a beer to a trans person. Bigots went ape **** because they don't want "fags drinking our beer too" The marketing person explained their rationale of wanting to reach other consumers. Bigots complained more about being called bigots. I guess the fault is believing their core customers were better people.1 point

At the Mud Hens game Saturday, Wingenter looked good, except for the 3 run HR to Clemens in the first - They fought back to 3-2, then brought Blair Calvo in - which was a disaster. He wasn't helped by a 2B error by Rizzo at 1B, but gave up 4. Game was shortened to 7-innings because of the rain delay - but at least I got to check an item off the bucket list.1 point

I wish they would do this with the Detroit broadcasts: Not because they would replace the announcers—they definitely wouldn't—but it would change the look of the broadcast from the Bally look, with its constant crawl talking about all those other sports that aren't baseball, to the sparser look that MLB Network has, with the scorebox at the top left and blissfully nothing streaming along the bottom.1 point

CMo is terrible. Two things bother me about Shepherd. 1st, he's just not that good an announcer - mangles sentences, starts phrases without knowing where he is going etc. But I could live with that if he would just finally claim his competence as a baseball guy instead of constantly, repeatedly, endlessless refusing to express a baseball take of his own without asking his color guy a question like wet behind the ears schoolboy. It makes for a constantly stilted broadcast. By now he should know enough baseball to be able to express an opinion and just have a normal conversation with his colorman. He doesn't need to constantly act like he's a total baseball moron.1 point
