I read that this morning and yeah that seems to be the general theme to that article. I did find it interesting that GMs were complaining about the price being too high but it seems the Dodgers were willing to pay it so other than the fact E-Rod's agent or E-Rod himself messed up the deal it sounds like Harris held his ground and was going to get a deal he wanted. So in all honesty that makes me a bit more confident with him in the driver's seat even though it obviously didn't work out this time he had a price and stuck to it.

Well, no, not if what's being offered is Dawal Lugo 2.0, and after E-Rod pulled his stunt other GMs would likely reassess his value to their team and adjust their offers accordingly. I didn't like that Avila gave good players away for garbage, and I'm not going to criticize Harris for not doing the same.

I don't know that getting something for him was his job. His job is to improve the ballclub and if someone else wasn't offering something he felt improved the ballclub then it's his job to not make that move. "Improve the ballclub" is a broad term that can mean both player personnel and business considerations. Keeping a good player on the team isn't a bad outcome. Trading ERod was an objective assigned by fans and media but not necessarily by his actual bosses.

I don't think it's because Javy doesn't want to, as much as Javy can't. Would he like to be able to? I think he would. But he has never learned how to hit situationally on a regular basis, and at the tender young age of almost 31, he ain't gonna learn now. Javy is a major league regular with a fat contract because he's an elite defender, a great baserunner, and, when he's right, can blast mistakes all over the park with astonishing regularity for weeks or even months at a time. If he could hit situationally effectively and control his zone regularly as well, he'd be on a Hall of Fame track. But he has a huge flaw that can be fatal to his performance, and that's definitely what we're seeing this year especially. He's going to be here for another four years, so I might as well keep rooting for him while he's out there.

Ideally, they get one guy for multiple years plus another Lorenzen/Boyd type. I don't know if they are ready for that commitment, but that is my hope.

And I will give Harris credit that he has kept his absolute cool in public. He hasn't whined or slammed anyone even though he has to be madder than hell. It's a good sign that he appears to have the discipline to avoid making the poor situation worse.

I go back the fact that Harris wasn't here during the ERod saga last year - maybe if he had been he would have been more circumspect in dealing with ERod's camp and thus would have limited his negotiations to teams that ERod couldn't veto. Sacrifice a little return for certainty your deal goes through. He put himself into the hands of people he trusted but should not have. I can accept a rookie getting burned once. It should never happen again.

I have changed my thoughts on possibly extending him. I don't necessarily want him gone because he's a difficult person. That's not a concern of mine, but extending him feels unnecessary. I want them to add a good pitcher or two to go with Mize/Manning/Skubal and their cast of prospects, but after looking at the list of free agent pitchers again, I think they should be able to get what they need without extending Rodriguez.

I still hope he opts in because he is a good pitcher and that would be a good three-year contract for the Tigers. It would also be easier to move him at next year's deadline with no opt out involved and 2 1/2 years remaining.

The fact that the reality may be more complicated than what came out of the initial reaction to this happening by Tigers fans does not inherently make it suspicious, no. And Gene Mato's statement last night, at least in my view, would suggest that Rosenthal's reporting isn't that far off what actually happened (if at all)

I will give Harris huge props for 1) getting someone to meet his high asking price and 2) not throwing ERod under the bus, which he so clearly deserves. Tigers treated him well last year. Would be nice to have some reciprocity.

If Eduardo’s agent was leading everyone along that a deal could be completed with LA all the way up to the last minute, before his client pulled out the rug at the last minute—which we can already reasonably assume—and Harris was getting garbage offers from everyone else—which seems fairly likely—then I would find it hard to blame Harris for anything here. After all, he had to trust that Mato knew what he was doing, and that Mato was dealing with the full faith that Eduardo was on board to go to LA during the process.

To put it another way, the target audience should make them wear it, in terms of future engagement, when they report stuff that isn't accurate. I know it isn't their responsibility to worry about the teams or discussions smooth or whatever.... but as a fan, it stands to reason that reporters reporting stuff that isn't accurate, or engaging in innuendo, should probably lead to criticism of said reporters. Or maybe questioning their wisdom in the future when they report or tweet.

The response to this non trade has been remarkable and reveals the worst about instant news and discussion points. Fans were ready to talk about the trade, it didn't happen, now they are pissed because they couldn't talk about it.

If there were deals lined up but the return was below what they felt he should fetch, should they have completed it? I can tell you that I could see a world where Harris trades ERod to one of the backup plan teams and, because the other options placed a different valuation than the Dodgers, the fanbase is blaming Harris for not getting enough back for Rodriguez. Which gets to the idea that had been discussed a couple of times yesterday... holding the line and not just selling for pennies on the dollar, ala JD Martinez
