  3. The hype train has gone way past the statin at this point. I watched the Inside the Den video that MICardinal shared here and man did I get jacked up to see these rookies on the field. I was sour on several of these picks when they happened on draft night, but after watching that, and having faith in this regime, I'm all about it now.

  7. I disagree on the backup catcher thing. He is a legit starter, top third in MLB, with 25 home run power. He's a good player.

  8. We had a cat that was in cahoots with the dog. There would be a loaf of bread on an island in the kitchen, too tall for the dog to get to, we'd come home and the bag was on the floor. I swear the cat pushed the loaf to the floor. Can't trust them.

  16. I'm mostly surprised how many years the 'system' of keeping numbers down - which is mostly subtle and largely underground, has persisted. OTOH - In general I don't begrudge docs their money that much - I'd rather see them be well paid than Ad men or banksters, and TBF when you look at Docs' raw income numbers is that before or after the cost of their malpractice ins and all the debt a lot of them end up carrying? Just in the last few years an older pediatrician friend of ours was looking to drop back to a part time practice, but just retired instead because she couldn't cover her ins costs working part time.

  18. Is LOB% skill or luck? The Tigers are top 10 in WHIP. Top 5 in walks, average in K/9, top half in hits allowed, average in HRs allowed. Every other team ranked in the top 10 in WHIP is among the league leaders in fewest runs allowed per game. By most metrics the Tigers defense is decent. In some really good, in others ok. The one metric where they really stink is in allowing men on base to score. They are 29th in LOB%. This says to me they been pretty unlucky.

  19. I don't get all this Rodriguez is a flake talk. He took time off to salvage his marriage, successfully it seems. That's good, no? I don't know all the details, and I don't need to know. The Tigers seemed fine with it and welcomed him back. Why is that not satisfactory? I'm not too happy Detroit got ****ed at the trading deadline, but again, I dont have all the facts and motivations, so I'm not going to assign blame. **** happens.

  21. Fascinating insight in this: Some of the more interesting tidbits, some of which I wasn't so aware of: The average physician over 40 makes over 400 bills a year, and that's including general practitioners, not just specialists. Graduates from the top medical schools, who can presumably write their own ticket to any field they want, tend to choose those that pay the most, responding to earnings potential when choosing specialties to go into. Homo economicus, indeed. As if to highlight something we all already knew, corrective and interventionist doctors make beaucoup bucks, and preventive medicine doctors make the least. Physicians were up in arms about this study when it came out because it questions the myth that doctors care only about patients, and not at all for the money. They probably care about both, and on a sliding scale depending on the individual doctor. The US has fewer physicians per capita than most first world countries, and than many second world countries as well. Most shocking to me, we have an artificial physician shortage due to a federal advisory committee who issued a report, which claimed we were "barreling toward a massive physician surplus", to a Reagan administration only too eager to cut back on federal spending on doctor-training systems. Therefore, from 1980 to around 2004, the number of medical graduates flatlined, even as the American population rose 29 percent. Least shocking to me, that current state of affairs was strongly support by the AAMC and the AMA, who only now is sounding the alarm about a doctor shortage. Surprise, surprise, surprise.

  23. Maybe his personal problem was more serious than other people's personal problems. Or maybe he is just entitled and lazy. He was physically able to pitch, but maybe he was mentally unable to pitch. Some people don't perfom well when they are dealing with mental issues. Either way he's not helping the team when he's not playing just like he was injured. What do you think of **** Allen? He seems like a comparable person, with all his personal problems and contract squabbles. Would you not want him on your team?

  24. Maybe this convo should be moved to the discussion thread but I really don't want him on the team. I think he's going to be a head case. If he's on the team, fine, but don't build around him or plan on him being an anchor in the rotation. Don't base another deal on "Well we have him already". Because he might leave.

  29. Granted all this, my argument still holds, which is that while he was within his rights to try to negotiate whatever he wanted, after using a last minute demand at the deadline after a deal had apparently been agreed to on all sides, he shouldn't be surprised if people label him dishonorable. And of course it didn't get him want he wanted either. And If I'm Harris I'm not giving him that yr 4 @ $20M either unless I'm sure there will still be an off season market for him at 4yr @ ~17.25M AAV.

  30. bonkers offense at every level, and a lot from the "real" prospects more on Justice Bigbie: except for one Freep article, cannot find anything on line about him. The parallels with Carpenter are glaring, though Bigbie is RH and his surge is more hit based, not power. Pretty great year obviously. Erie is going to playoffs, but he might force his way to Toledo if he keep going like this

  37. Yeah, I'm not down with the "Harris had to get something for E-Rod" argument. Well, no, not if what's being offered is Dawal Lugo 2.0, and after E-Rod pulled his stunt other GMs would likely reassess his value to their team and adjust their offers accordingly. I didn't like that Avila gave good players away for garbage, and I'm not going to criticize Harris for not doing the same.

  38. I don't know that getting something for him was his job. His job is to improve the ballclub and if someone else wasn't offering something he felt improved the ballclub then it's his job to not make that move. "Improve the ballclub" is a broad term that can mean both player personnel and business considerations. Keeping a good player on the team isn't a bad outcome. Trading ERod was an objective assigned by fans and media but not necessarily by his actual bosses.

  39. I will give Harris huge props for 1) getting someone to meet his high asking price and 2) not throwing ERod under the bus, which he so clearly deserves. Tigers treated him well last year. Would be nice to have some reciprocity.
