  2. this is the way. there are a huge number of Americans who consume almost no news. they are probably more aware that Trump is the massively successful businessman who had a hit show on NBC then that he tried to overthrow the government. Was at a party this Summer and talking to some rando and mentioned J6 and he said "what ever happened with that? did Trump ever leave?" literally, he was not sure if Trump was in DC or MAL. Pretty sure that guy is going to vote in 2024. the delta in states that matter was under 100k in both 2016 and 2020 - every vote counts - at least there it does

  3. Tomorrow is Rule 5 protection day. Here's a full list of who is Rule 5 Eligible. P Jose Alvarez Yeremi Bastardo Austin Bergner Michael Bienlien Jorge Boyer Jaison Brete Blair Calvo Jesus Cruz Daniele Di Monte Jose Diaz Wilmer Fenelon Wilmer Flores Dario Gardea Sean Guenther Layne Henderson Wilkel Hernandez Martin Herrera Zack Hess Jake Higginbotham Edgardo Ibarra Marco Jimenez Abraham Landaeta Andrew Magno Chris Mauloni Williander Moreno Tim Naughton Hendry Nunez Carlos Pena Eric Pinales Angel Reyes Jose Rivas Erick Rodriguez Jesus Rodriguez Bryan Sammons Yosber Sanchez Gabriel Sequeira Ted Stuka Bryce Tassin Matt Walker Adam Wolf Aneurys Zabala C Eliezer Alfonzo Daneurys De La Cruz Dillon Dingler Ricardo Hurtado Samuel Rojas Newremberg Rondon Sergio Tapia Eduardo Valencia IF Angel Cruz Geury Estevez Alvaro Gonzalez Jake Holton Corey Joyce Carlos Mendoza Andrew Navigato Quincy Nieporte Adinso Reyes Gage Workman OF Lazaro Benitez Danny Cabrera Roberto Campos Trei Cruz Raudy De Los Santos Iverson Leonardo Abelaldo Lopez Jesus Machado Jose Ochoa Jose Reina Manuel Sequera The only two I would keep are Dingler and Flores. One thing I hope the transaction logs cover is the minor league protection. You can protect up to 38 players from the Minor League phase, but you probably don't want to fill all those spots up, because you also need to make room for any players you outright between now and the Rule 5 draft, any minor league free agents signed between now and the Rule 5 draft, and any players you want to take in the minor league phase. A lot of players will be clearing waivers tomorrow. There's a decent chance the Tigers claim at least one. Tomorrow is the last day players added to the 40 man roster since August 15 can be outrighted until March. Same for injured players. Those players can still be non-tendered Friday. A player DFA'ed tomorrow can be non-tendered on Friday (which may be beneficial if you have a deal in place with them because it bypasses waivers).

  7. I remember a Lions-Falcons game in London a few years back where almost the exact same thing happened. Prater came out for the game winning kick and missed it, but the Lions own ineptitude led to a delay of game penalty being called before the kick. Backed him up five yards and, naturally, he drilled it.

  8. I think my response is fine. Not everybody has to be an alarmist. Why do you always tell me to leave it there or we'll have to agree to disagree? It's a message board. If one of us gets tired of the discussion, we can just go to a different thread or just leave and do something else. Personally, I don't think Trump has changed for 40 years. His vermin comment dosn't change anything. He has always been trash. I am probably more annoyed that people haven't figured that out than anything else.

  12. It's the government's business to create an environment where business wants to stay enough to take care of their workers as well as society demands. There are lots of details to that but that basically a big piece is that everything you do to create a better all round society helps. That's the job. That's why 'kill the beast' and 'starve it till you can drown it in the bathtub' is such lunacy. A well run gov at each level is the key to a lot of things Americans want but they've been brainwashed into thinking they can get those things by magic instead.

  20. Regardless of Trump's state of mind while using it, the danger in the vermin comment is less about what he consciously, literally and specifically intends to do by using it, and more about what using it gives the millions of his most ardent followers permission to do.

  21. Probably separate broadcast rights prevents it. I don't think Bally's or even MLB would countenance Dan Dickerson doing live reads for radio advertisers like Trex composite decking or Wallside Windows on a TV broadcast.

  22. That DNA takes a really long time to shed too.... it basically took the Southern Strategy for Democrats to start losing the FDR/New Deal DNA in the south, but even that was a slow burn. The suburbs have become more hostile to the GOP in recent years, but that has also been something that has happened over time. To put into context, we've internalized a lot how bad suburbs have become for Donald Trump, particularly in the northern United States, but prior to 2008: Chester County PA (which Biden won 57-41 in 2020) voted once for a Democratic candidate between 1916 and 2008 (Johnson 1964) Kent County MI (Biden 52-46) voted three times for a Democratic candidate between 1888 and 2008 (1916, 1936, 1964) Kane and Dupage Counties in IL (Biden 56-42 and 57-41 respectively) NEVER voted for a Democrat in the 20th Century Trends exist, but often I think people expect stuff to happen overnight and it doesn't because people are conditioned to vote the way they always have. Or that you vote or participate the way everyone always has because that's the way to get ahead wherever you live (which is definitely the case in the county I grew up in). Either way, it happens in drips and drabs.

  23. I really believe it's almost embedded in their social DNA. Grand parents, parents, aunts and uncles all voted for Republicans. Especially after FDR, Kennedy (religious prejudice) Johnson (Great Society). In the south those who grew up with the Dixiecrats became Republicans with Nixon and Reagan.

  25. I re-watched the game last night and I didn’t realize that the 30+ consecutive runs wasn’t exactly organic. Moore didn’t say “we aren’t going to pass”, in fact there were three pass plays called in that sequence. One JJ took off when coverage was solid, one screen never got off because of a timeout, and one deep shot got called for DPI. The headline of so many consecutive runs would make you think the pass was abandoned but it’s really just how it turned out.

  28. he pressured Jerome Powell to keep interest rate slow and to continue QE even when, as he would always say, it was the best economy ever. That's very inflationary. ETA we repeatedly saw that he woudl chose whatever would keep the stock market high, even if that had bad consequences as not raising interest rates in a good economy obvs would.

  29. Also DJ Chark and Tee Higgins, two other guys that people have compared Williams against, are barely any better on that score. Yes, sample size matters, yes, timing and trust with the QB matters. This is why it wouldn’t take much for Williams to change the narrative. Maybe Williams is just a busy and maybe DPJ will be an improvement over Williams as the sixth receiving option, but there is no guarantee. But mostly I appreciate the reminder of why I have you on mute. Next time I won’t peek.

  32. I think what needs to be recognized is that, even though he delineates between various groups (ie. Communists, Marxists, etc), what he really means is everyone who is opposed to HIM. Even if Lee is right insofar that he is saying (which oddly enough tracks with dictators of the past) is accidental (and I don’t), it really doesn't make it any less abhorrent or unacceptable. And just explaining that away as "Trump being Trump" kinda speaks volumes with where we are as a country.

  33. Politically Hillary’s was worse because it confirmed her potential voters skepticism towards her and I do think people bailed. “See… they think are all low class bums.” It was anti populist. It helped create the Obama/Trump voter. Which was a thing. academically Trumps was worse. But political is what matters. An educated and well thought out vote based on issues and studying is cancelled by someone who “aint voting for no bitch because they they think they are better than us”
    1 point
  34. I don't think the comparison is particularly apt. Hillary's comment was not bad because of the language or any implicit violence, but because her exact phrase "basket of deplorables" was a case of total class based dismissal. It was taken as a window into an elitist/privileged mindset that dovetailed so well with enough average voters' predispositions about the Clintons that it stuck. Trump calling people 'vermin' is classic fascist dehumanization agitprop which is always the prelude to the eventual moral justification for discrimination, abuse or violence against the targeted people. I don't think they are in the same league at all. One was political stupidity and a classic example of a politician saying what they really mean by mistake. The second has all the hallmarks of a much deeper and threatening moral degeneracy and spoken with intent to mean exactly what was said.

  35. To me this is where it's different from 2016...they've had 7 years to organize for the Erdogan like takeover of the Republic. They have a blueprint (with the backing of the Federalist Society) including loyalty oaths and the complete takeover of the Justice Department https://www.axios.com/2023/11/13/trump-loyalists-2024-presidential-election?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

  36. However, the political fact is that bad leaders do tend to get worse if given the chance and pathological personalities generally only get more pathological with time. I have no desire to give Trump the chance to be worse, and it would be a foolish risk for Americans dismiss the high likelihood he would be worse.

  37. I also think these comments are gonna find their way into the campaign - Trump mentioned Communist and Marxists and whatnot, but really he's referring to everyone that isn't in the tent. And that's a majority of Americans if polls are to be believed that aren't Trumpists. It's a political loser of a comment, but it got him attention I guess lol

  39. they have private property in China, just no effective rule of law to protect owner rights from state fiat. It's a fair argument that's a sort of distinction without a difference, but while there is still a lot state owned industry in China - especially around the Red Army/defense sector, the concept of communal ownership of the means of production isn't much of an organizing principle for development in China. No doubt Xi had/has designs to reverse that tend, but I don't think he's gotten very far. China has also been ranked by some methods as having the world's most billionaires, so economic class stratification is very much alive.
