In the mid 90's you could find them here for $2 at a smoke shop, $2.50 to $3 elsewhere. I used to deliver pizzas and had a few customers that would ask me to get some for them, I'd tell them $4 as we had a shop in our strip mall. I made $2 from that plus any pizza tip.2 points

and getting that from the manager tells me that he and Scott Harris, and Greenberg, feel like a team and have long term plans to work together.2 points

I had been skeptical that the Tigers front office, even Harris, would not have placed any kind of priority on getting the right TV play by play announcer for the team. I believed they would have thought it was the last thing they should address, if at all, since it doesn’t lead directly to wins on the field. But A.J’s comment here shows how important they believe getting the right announcer in the booth is in energizing the fan base for the team. When the book gets written about the team’s transformation, the Jason Benetti hire is probably going to end up being regarded as one of the best moves they end up making.2 points

You can thank Stu Roosa. He used to fight forest fires as a smokejumper (Yes, they jump into it) and later became a test pilot and was selected by NASA. He was the Command Module Pilot on Apollo 14. That position stayed in the command module circling the moon while the other two lucky bastards got to go land and walk on the moon. That position has the morbid responsibility of having to fly back to Earth alone in case of any tragedies. Anyway, because of his work with the forestry he took up the seeds as part of his personal kit, it wasn't a NASA program or experiment but something he did on his own. If not for the Nixon budget cuts to the program he probably would have commanded an Apollo 20 mission and been the last man to walk on the moon for now. I took this photo of his grave at Arlington in 2009.2 points

I would rather draft an elite talent at a low value position than an average talent at a high value position.2 points

You know, this is really a sneaky good point here: fabricating a spending crisis using a supposedly inevitable social security bankruptcy gives congressional fiscal scolds on the far right a nice cudgel with which they can strong-arm spending cuts in social programs for the poor to help offset ginormous tax breaks for gajillionaires.1 point

It is exactly correct. You are confused. The Lions will take the highest graded player, their grades having factored in all values, including positional value (to them), character, work ethic, etc.1 point

I think we're all largely on the same page here, just saying it in different terms. I have said in this thread and others, that I think they draft for talent and culture fit, but that the culture has to fit in order for the talent to be considered. I've used Jalen Carter as a recent example of. If a guy like Carter is supremely talented and checks that box, but doesn't check the culture fit box, they will pass on him every time. The player they are looking to draft has to have a coachable attitude and be willing to learn from the staff. They have to love/respect/value football as much as they do. Otherwise, they're not going to get drafted, regardless of talent level. Players like an Antonio Brown, Chase Young, Jalen Carter, Vontez Burfict, etc. would never get drafted by this organization, as much as we the fan may want a guy like that because they simply don't fit the culture.1 point

Bingo. Shrinkflation is real. The companies are taking the "inflation" issue and simply taking advantage of it. This whole idea of competition being a winner for the consumer is hogwash. For mortage rates... maybe it's because I'm related to a realtor who lives this stuff, but I blame social media in a way. I think everybody knows 6 people who do real estate. We are bombarded with ads to refinance, cash out, etc. I can't even pay my freaking mortage without first navigating things telling me how much equity I have, etc. Yes it sucks for people who bought on a low rate and now can't move because they are higher... but what are we supposed to do?1 point

I just gotta laugh every time I remember reading these posts. I think some long-time fans simply prefer the image of a grizzled mustachioed baseball lifer who sucks down heaters in the dugout and yells at his superstar players authoritarian-style than they do a thoughtful soft-spoken Standford man with a psychology degree and a penchant for data.1 point

Can someone explain the fixation with gas prices? 40 years ago it was approximately $1 a gallon. Now it is approximately $3 a gallon. Most things have gone up 10 times or more in the past 40 years. A pack of baseball card in 1984 was 30 cents. Now they are $3. A McDonald's Filet-O-Fish was 50 cents. Now they are $5. A daily newspaper was 20 cents. Now they are $2 if not more.1 point

People that act like uneven weather is something new, or a Michigan thing. It's not. For as long as I can remember we had warm days sometimes in February and cold/snow in April and May. My wife has a framed cutout from a newspaper story she was in from like 1977 where the headline is "Cold day in June" and she's bundled up in a snowsuit because it was freezing temps. yes the overall trend is a thing but the day to day fluctuations are not.1 point

There was the Summer my wife said,"oh by the way I bought a tent". It was almost as large as my first apartment and would have been nice if the weather cooperated. First night we set up camp in Vermont, I had visions of being washed away in the deluge. Rain kept following us as we headed into Maine. The only decent day was one outside Boston. (BTW instead of kids we brought the dog) We managed two days there. We ended cutting our stay in Arcadia National Park by a day because we were tired of taking down a wet tent. A couple of years later we rented an RV to tour the UP. After a close encounter with a gas pump we had a decent trip (again with pup). We're talking about doing the Maritime providences this fall (I did NS and PEI about 50 years ago with my younger brother in a Pinto). I really need to start exploring VBRO's1 point

I don't think 31 is too young to be finished for a hitter who has no hitting skill and seems to rely totally on natural ability and reflexes. That's not say that he's done. Statistically, the only difference between last year and some of his good years is lack of home runs. If he gets his power back and maintains strong defense, he could still be useful.1 point

So we did a week in Alaska all the way out to Denali last year and everyone is looking for moose. "They're bound to be there", "We always see them over here".....No moose. We are on the road back to Anchorage on the tour bus and are basically all the way back into the suburbs, and Momma and 2 calves are sauntering across the road....🤷♀️ But if you are a fan of Moose, just go to Isle Royale. We've had several close encounters with Moose in the evenings just on the path from the docks to the bathrooms at Windago.1 point

Sorry... I don't see the loss. Does a good pass rush help a secondary? Yes. Does a good secondary help the pass rush with extra time to get home? Yes. Can a great secondary cover for a weak D-Line? No. Can a great pass rush make a crappy secondary into a good one? No. What I'm arguing is that it's easier to find ways to pass rush and harder to find high-level CB's. There are a LOT fewer high level CB's then there are pass rushers. My argument is: spend money on a CB in FA if you can find the right guy, even if it's big money. And... there's no NEED to spend big money in FA on a pass-rusher because there are multiple ways to find a pass-rush that can be cost effective. Lesser cost FA's and guys in the draft all over the place (just find the right guy, like Houston, or Crosby, or Hunter...). It's HARD to find good CB's. That's my logic and it's 100% sound and correct.1 point

Why do you think they took Campbell over a guy who was nominated for Defensive Rookie of the Year Porter Jr.? Do you think they had Gonzalez slotted higher than Porter Jr. on their board? My contentions here are a few different things. First, just because we as fans see a need doesn't mean the organization feels the same way or feels it is as pressing as we do. Sometimes what fans see and the organization sees align and sometimes not. Edge/DE/pass rusher is an example of this. Most Lions fans have said we need to get someone to bookend Aiden and help us get pressure on the QB from the opposite side of the field or the interior. Their answer was to stick with and/or resign guys they already have in Cominsky, Harris, Houston, Okwara. My other contention is they have a draft board where they rank players based on talent and fit, regardless of positional need or value. Fans (I know I do) get hung up on positional value and need all the time and then get disappointed when the front office doesn't address it as they feel they should. I think this front office takes the top talent on their board, who fits their culture, regardless of positional need or value. That's why they took Gibbs over Carter, Gonzalez or Porter Jr. when most fans would have done the opposite. I also think they refuse to break the bank or deviate from their plan in free agency to try and address a perceived need. Daniel Jeremiah has mocked us taking a Guard, Zach Frazier from West Virginia, in his latest mock. Let's say the Lions didn't add a starting CB on the free agent or trade market and then went out and took a Guard in the first round. I know fans would be upset if they took a Guard over a CB after not making a major addition at the position. But should they be surprised by this front office doing such a thing? I would argue no because they draft for talent/fit and aren't going to be pigeonholed into taking a guy, or signing a free agent, out of desperation based on a perceived need. Furthermore, with Mosley coming back and a guy in Chase Lucas in the room, they may like what they have a CB. While I do highly doubt they like their CB room as it stands now, it would not shock me if they didn't make a major upgrade at the position. Good thing for us, they are a heckuva a lot smarter and know what they are doing. In Holmes I trust!1 point

Since when has Cam Sutton been a "bad CB". He was a #2 CB forced into being a #1 CB with the Lions. Has nothing to do with the pass rush.1 point
-
I think if they spend big money, it's on a CB. The good ones (meaning capable of playing the position and not getting burned for TD's...) are just too rare. I think it's easier to manufacture a pass-rush. In multiple different ways: a good DE, a pass-rushing interior player, a blitz-LB'er, or good-blitzing Safeties or CB's... I just think there are too many ways to bandaid a D-Line or a pass-rush. You can't bandaid a Burnt-Toast-CB so if they spend money, IMO... it's here.1 point

The simple solution is to just raise the income threshold on social security but republicans have convinced a bunch of poor people that raising taxes slightly on wealthy people is bad.1 point

I feel like I heard Holmes say before he wanted to model the Lions after the Ravens or Steelers who are consistent winners who build within. I know the Ravens have made some splash signing here and there, but they really always build through the draft.1 point

Right. I don't feel that will happen with this regime. Brad Holmes and co. seem to be very smart with the cap and their finances. They seem to prioritize their own players that they can draft and develop over spending big in free agency like prior Lions regimes have done. Those expecting a Trey Flowers type signing and contract should temper their expectations. That's ok too because this regime clearly knows what the hell it's doing. They have a plan and it has thus far gotten them to an NFC Championship and was a half away from a Super Bowl. While I'd like to make one major, marquee defensive signing in free agency, I'll be ok if they don't because we clearly have competent people running things around here now.1 point

The Mayer/Jobe debate hasn't even begun. They are both prospects who haven't reached AAA yet. The Tigers could win that debate by a lot or they could lose it by a lot. Like the Wyatt/Clark debate, we won't know the answer for years.1 point

My only request is to maybe wait a few years to come to that conclusion, and to also factor in the rest of the draft made possible by going under slot at #3 overall. Also, it is possible Langford raised his price for the Tigers.1 point

I have no idea how many complete sets I have... but quite a few. Unlike most... after my dad got me into collecting by buying me a complete 1974 Topps set... I went old school. I just loved the older cards. A few complete sets (and I collect only ExMt-NrMt or better grade... hard to do... but eBay has been a bonanza for people just dumping cards and being able to find good deals), and only baseball unless otherwise noted: 1951 Topps Red Backs. 1956 Topps Football. 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1963 Fleer sets. 1962 Post Cereal set. 1953 Johnston Cookies (Braves only, with Spahn and Eddie Mathews) 1964 Topps. 1969-1976 Topps. 1964 Auravision Records (7x7 33's with Kaline & Mantle, etc..,) 1953 Bowman Black & White 1953 Bowman Color (actually I'm missing Mantle, Berra, and a card with Mantle Berra & Bauer) I'm close to complete sets (missing key cards) with: 1939, 1940, and 1941 Playball. 1948 and 1949 Bowman. 1952 to 1963 Topps (range from 2 to 14 cards still needed, except the 52's with about 44 missing). 1951 Topps Blue Backs. 1966 Topps 1964 Topps Stand Ups 1964 Wheaties Stamps 1954 Red Heart Dog Food 1952 Num Num Potato Chips (only Indians... and I've got the Feller card). All with tabs (much less without tabs...) 1955 Red Man Tobacco 1939 Goudey Premiums, B set (I've got Joe DiMaggio, but missing Jimmy Foxx and a couple others...). I have about 200 different T-206's (tobacco cards from 1909-1911). Errr... I'm a bit of a collector.1 point
