I think it has to be more difficult to develop the kind of analytics around hitting as have been accomplished for pitching because with hitting the biomechanics is only half - if even that - of the story. There are so many additional neurological issues - vision, reflex, concentration, decision, layered on top the biomechanics issues around swing, balance, bat speed, etc.. Makes it a more complex problem. You may make a physical change that should theoretically help a guy but maybe it doesn't help because he is blocked somewhere else. It's going to be harder to figure out what's going on. Or maybe another way to put it is you can put guys into better physical approaches, but it may or may not make them better hitters. Obviously if you do at least help the guys that can be helped it should still put your org ahead of an org that can't even do that. Marginal success rates matter even if net success rates never get as high as with pitchers.

Meadows also allows them to move Greene to a corner which gives them plus defense at two positions out there. If Meadows can make decent contact against MLB pitchers in the regular season, he'll be quite an asset.

One thing you never heard talked about is that if the entire US pension system went private, we might well end up like China (where everyone saves because there is no SS), with a stagnant, over-invested, under consuming economy. It's actually not clear that there is enough investment potential available to absorb all the savings that privatizing SS would generate. The example of China argues it an issue that can't just be dismissed.

With how quickly plays happen, and the "penalty" to an injured player of having to sit out the next play, I doubt it would. They'll want to do their celebration for the big play and get ready for the next rather than fake an injury. It's not like the "late" hits out of bounds where they'll go flailing into a bench to make it look like a much bigger hit than it was. At least I hope.

I would like honest player feedback, especially from someone like JD Martinez who played here then left, about whether the park size impacts them on the road vs at home. I believe it messes with their heads but I never claim to be an expert on such things so it's just me talking here.

This is my hack at creating my first-ever map over at MapChart.net. This is a map of the most-named counties in the US and where they all are. You probably could have guess that Washington is the most common county name, with 32 different counties named that. There's a whole bunch of them centered around the states that came into the union in basically the 1800 to 1830 range, my guess being that the Revolution was still in living memory and honoring its heroes through naming rights was a top priority. As the nation pushed west, county naming imperatives apparently changed. California has only one county among the most common names, and Arizona and western Texas have none, probably because original Spanish geographical names survived. Anyhow, it was really fun to put together and took me only about an hour to learn how to do it and then create the map.

It's way too early to know the actual details at this point, but bigger picture, there are very few, if any, bridges that would be able to withstand a large container ship of that size taking out one of it's supports. It looks like during a conference call with reporters last week Troy Vincent "strongly implied" that it would be treated similarly to the illegal use of helmet rule, where it is more often a fine and letter penalty. ESPN. If I had to guess, it's going to be - similarly to the use of helmet penalty - not called unless it results in an injury to a key player. That said, I also wonder if this penalty is actually going to be even all that effective at getting these out of the game. This penalty most often comes when the defender is in "chase mode", where if they don't do something to stop the ballcarrier, it will be a touchdown. If a corner has a choice between picking up a fine and (maybe) a 15-yard penalty or giving up a touchdown, they may select the former in a real-time, game-time decision. In that sense too, I don't think this will be a game-changing penalty in the way defensive holding can be. The 15 yards will come after a first down has already been picked up more often than not.

if this year is any indication there will be lots of guys who should be called up but wont be because theyre blocked. if they re-sign perron that will be another block to guys like mazur or kasper. at some point, if theyre going to keep rolling with the veteran clubhouse presence dudes, theyre going to need to trade some of these young players for a star type player before their prospect sign wears off.

Yes, I know all this. That's why I said if he's trying to build the team from a less-than-zero standpoint... then he's not able to do this. As you've mentioned, he's had to go out and sign a boatload of FA's just to fill holes. And why I also said: "But now that the team is built up pretty nicely..." I'm hoping he doesn't have to annually sign a crapload of players to fill holes. I guess what that means, ultimately for the team, is that Holmes is successful in drafting, and DC & his coaches "coaching up", enough depth on this team to where Holmes can let 3-5 FA's walk and only have to go out into the market to sign 1 or 2... Meeting your (the NFL's) formula to obtain additional comp picks... Further allowing Holmes & DC to draft and develop depth, future later round starters that require a lot of coaching up, etc... with those extra picks. I don't think we are saying, or want from the Lions, anything different from each other.
