  1. 2 homers down. 38 to go for Tork.

  2. It's quite possible that the Tigers approach to hitting can't work for Javy and on the wrong side of 30 he can't change - so he's is caught between trying to be a good trooper and do what his coaches want him to do because they think it will help him, and the fact that he's a pure reaction hitter and has to just clear his head and swing away. Plus the reality that with that long swing he may have been doomed at 30 anyway as soon as he lost a few milliseconds off his reaction time, whether he wants to change or not.

  3. Living in Knoxville I can tell you that he is a much better passer than runner. He can run/scramble but this not what made him SEC player of the year. He is accurate and makes good decisions. I say this lightly...like an Aaron Rodgers type.

  10. I was thinking of picking Weathers up of the waiver wire in my roto league just to pitch against the Tigers. Then I got excited about last night's game and didn't want to have to root against them tonight.

  11. Javy is going nowhere as long we have no better option to replace him.

  12. I personally don't understand the 6:40 start, either. It's not like there aren't a bunch of people coming in from the suburbs. The extra 20 minutes to get into the park made a big difference.

  13. I didn't like it either. To criticize politicians for abusing the military is one thing. Disrespecting soldiers is another thing entirely.

  15. Is he though? We really don't know anything about him. Now, there is a gigantic caveat here: The coaches do know him, at least significantly more than we as fans do. But even the coaches hasn't seen him in game in the NFL, and (hopefully) never will need to anytime soon. Add in that Hooker will be a very different style of player (more scrambling/mobility) and it would be potentially harder to transition to Hooker on the fly if we needed to. In my humble opinion the best-case backup would be a QB who has a similar skill set as Goff does and has a track record of NFL experience. That's not Hooker. Ultimately I'll defer to the Lions staff on this... they know him and the team far better than me so I'm not trying to say they should do X or Y or whatever. I'm just speculating: Hooker was a developmental guy who they could groom to replace Goff if they needed to. Now it's clear they don't need to or certainly don't intend to.

  16. We should honor soldiers for their courage and sacrifice as much as we can. They deserve our praise and admiration. It's the people who tell them what to do who can be a problem.

  17. I don't know, thats not my concern. If they are so lost they can't come up with an alternative to a historically unpopular and old president, they deserve to loose. The bar for a functional national party in this country is so pathetically low, and both parties continue to lower it.

  19. There was a lot of public push back over Afghanistan, but hard times after the Soviet collapse and 20 yrs of Putin have created a different Russia from that one. But that is not to say Putin cannot drive Russia to collapse. The problem for the West is that total collapse will not be a good outcome, you want the regime to collapse before the country does - not so easy to see the path to that. The West's strategy is based on the Russian army collapsing eventually - and any armed service will eventually, but of course that requires Ukraine not to collapse first. It's purely a political economics question. Modern warfare is foremost an economic battle and the West's resources dwarf Russia's, but Russia (well at least Putin) balances that by being willing to put all their resources into the fight while the West wants to win on the minimum required investment. Missing on that calculation is where disaster lurks for Ukraine.

  20. Never watched Sheppard play. But he appears to be a much better shooter. 52% from three is bananas, even in college. He has more steals, which doesn't necessarily mean he plays good defense. Sheppard is about to turn 20 and Sasser is about to turn 24. Sheppard's spirit hasn't been crushed yet by playing for a terrible organization.

  21. Givoni reporting that Topic is ok. Just a sprained knee. That could be good for the Pistons of a team SAN wants him ahead of our pick.

  22. this bothered me though: this was Tork, quoted by Petzold last week. I don't think you can give away any AB where a pitcher can hit his spot 3 times. That's a solid recipe for only winning games against the worst pitchers. Sure, you hunt zone when you are ahead in the count, but you have to start adjusting your approach from 0-1, at two strikes you've given the pitcher too many ways to get you out. And if you watch the Tigers, they seem to fail on an inordinate number of AB where they are up 2-0, because they are looking for perfect and pretty soon they are 2-2 and then out of the AB. Your BA when you get to 2-0 should be huge. And it's especially dumb for Tork, because he has the power to "do damage" just fine on an outer third FB (IIRC, 6 opposite field HR last season) if he sat on one at 0-1 when he *knows* that is where he is going to be pitched. But so far he won't. The 'approach' doesn't even give himself enough credit. Everything you do in a AB has to be directed at not getting to two strikes, esp 0-2. All the numbers tell you that. If the Tiger's are willing to go to 0-2 to swing the bat at a strike, that is why they are an inept offense.

  24. For the record, I don't like PHing for Carpenter that early in a game. I understand the general lefty on lefty situation at hand. I'm just not all that worried about Carpenter vs Nardi.

  26. As bad as the hitting has been to start the year, there was always a glass-half-full view where Tork (and Keith) weren't likely to continue to be as bad at the dish as they have been to date. I need to see more, trust but verify, but even before the homer on Sunday, both with the bat and the glove, it's been apparent that Tork has been playing better. Just need to see more consistency

  27. Before yesterday's game somebody on Twitter posted Tork's slash line from a year ago this time and it was pretty damn close to what it was this year. I believe the obp was down this year but slugging up(or vice versa) but ultimately the OPS was about the same.

  32. Jared Goff was a deflected INT and two dropped passes away from a Super Bowl. He's brought us closer to a Super Bowl than any Lions QB in the Super Bowl era. He most definitely deserves the contract he is getting.

  34. What bothers me the most is the giggling while talking about something stupid while the game is going on. Totally ignoring the action. Sometimes the camera goes to the booth and Jason has his back to the action, not even paying attention to the game. That may have been OK in Chicago but in Detroit, we pay attention the the game. It's why we watch.

  39. I still think Jamo got a bit railroaded by stupid NFL rules. Sure, you can say he should have known them, but surveys that went out after the fact showed that most players didn’t. You can gamble, from not in this parking lot, or this hotel, or that facility, but across the street from any of those is fine.

  40. Latest Trump interview - here’s his position “Former President Trump in a new interview suggested states with restrictive abortion bans might monitor women’s pregnancies and should be left to decide whether to prosecute women for having the procedure.” I am frightened for every woman in this country.

  41. With the pitch clock speeding up games, this 6:40 start time is way too early. These games being over by 9 PM suck. And a morning Sunday game? I hope the stadium is empty and nobody watches. It's just a huge money grab, just like those horrible uniforms.
