and I will tell you that as a woman, I didn’t say a word about a sexual assault that happened to me until 50 years after it happened. edited to delete my second paragraph, and to say, the hell with this. Sexual assaults happen. Sometimes with witnesses, more often without… and because you know that the pushback and ridicule you encounter if you dare bring it up, often you just bury it in your own mind.8 points

Defending a known sexual assaultist, one who has bragged about doing so, yeah, that is about values. You are giving the benefit of the doubt to someone that deserves none. This is a forum, not a court of law, so whether it is ever proven isn’t the issue. It’s who you choose to defend and excuse.5 points

I don't think your view is accurate as a woman who was assaulted as a child. They're men in power, men in your neighborhood, at your church, your coworker, your health care provider, a guy you went to school with, possibly even a family member, or the former President of the United States. Too many have the idea that "they" are these crazy slime balls that hide in the shadows and attack strangers. I'm sure there are those, but many more who blend in to every day life that you'd never suspect. That's how they do what they do. Unfortunately, too many like 1776 who think there's a time limit on it, or that you have to "prove it", or that they're being vulgar or manly or locker room talk.4 points

Yes... and the dragging was going on and on about how women make this stuff up is ignorant for a ton of reasons, not the least of which that so many are getting those memories dragged up when people do that. I have zero tolerance for that, and frankly I'm in "insanity later" mode over the fact that Trump even has a ****ing chance here. Trump is a menace and the people who enable and pump up his propaganda aren't worthy of any ****ing respect at all.3 points

I've been seeing this take a lot from journalists in the wake of WaPo's **** up... But if consumers aren't satisfied and want to send a message, what other means are there to get it acrossrd? Journalism is very important, but the industry's inability for self-reflection is a big reason we are here.2 points

All I will say is that, despite the fact that he was on tape in the AH Tape describing in vivid detail something that happened involving him, it appears that in the eyes of some, he may have been just telling a story (or, as he framed in 2016, "locker room talk") I wish I could understand why he deserves the benefit of the doubt on that. He just doesn't, sorry2 points

The timing makes sense to somebody who is concerned that a predator is about to be put into a position of power, especially a position in which said predator will be evaluating policies concerning sexual assault and consequences of sexual assault on victims.2 points

I didn't realize until recent years how many women have been victims of sexual assualt. We probably all know people who have been through it. The vast majority of men have never sexually assaulted anyone, so most of the attacks have been made by serial predators. Because most men don't do stuff like that, they might find it hard to believe how common it is, so they think the stories are made up.2 points

Taken on its own terms, Game 1 of the 2024 World Series will go down as one of the all time greats.2 points

Thank you for sharing even though it must be difficult to share even now. It's a different ball of wax, but from my own life, I experienced mental abuse at home... I would open up about it, one thing that I learned as a young age is that it could be difficult to convey what happened at home to the guidance counselor at school, or that while he may have even believed me at times there ultimately was little he could do from his position. All of this is to say that the power dynamics in these situations can be really hard for the victims.... and I couldn't even imagine how bad the power dynamics would be if one got mixed up with someone in a powerful position in society like DJT.2 points

Trump was found liable by a jury for sexual assault. What are we even doing here?2 points

If a newspaper doesn't want to do endorsement, that's fine. The problem is that WaPo has already made endorsements in all the other VA and MD federal office elections so instead of a principled decision to change a policy before an electoral cycle stared, you have an obvious putsch by ownership to overrule his own staff and cut off a process that had already run nearly to completion for this election cycle. So instead of being a expression of principle, it's simply an admission of that Bezos is willing to prioritize his other business interests over the editorial integrity of his newspaper. A guy like that should probably sell to someone else - unfortunately for the public, newspapers don't make enough money for anyone likely to be editorially independent to be interested.2 points

I'm picturing a Sinclair Lewis type scenario, in which they elect WIndrip but end up disposing of him.1 point

Oh, man…. Yes. quote: ”It’s a situation analogous to what we saw in Russia in the early 2000s: We are witnessing the surrender of the American business community to Donald Trump.” Spot on.1 point

I can still remember watching that Gibby HR in my parents’ bedroom with my dad, my brother, and my brother’s friend who was staying with us for the evening. Us three boys were going nuts, and Dad (who hadn’t forgiven him for not re-signing with Detroit) just shook his head and said “Gibson” in flat disgust.1 point

My original response to you merely asked if you would even just CONSIDER if it could be true…. you know, immediately after you decided that the Blasey Ford accusation was just some more lying woman nonsense. …. But, now I can see that , in no case , are you likely to ever give the “she could possibly be telling the truth” thought any consideration. (copied & pasted from a previous page) ============================== Ever entertain the possibility that the accusations could be true? That there’s a life-long pattern? ====================================== And now, I really am done with any further responses from me in this discussion.1 point

1986 was insane. Red Sox were down to their last out in the ALCS before Dave Henderson saved them. Mets beat the Astros in something like an 18 inning marathon in the NLCS. Then the World Series with Buckner and all that1 point

How great is it that Derek Jeter has to sit on a panel while Dave Roberts, the guy with the steal that sparked the Red Sox comeback against the Yankees in 2004, talked about beating his Yankees in the World Series Game 1 this year? Couldn’t be better. And he had not a single word to say.1 point

Other than 84 for obvious reasons, I don't think I can recall a better overall playoff season in my lifetime. Great baseball for fans. If only Vin Scully had been here to call Freddie's shot1 point

Can't believe Boone walked to load the bases, I know it gave him a platoon advantage but not only did it make a single beat you more importantly it forces the pitcher to throw strikes. Cortes does not have the type of command to paint the corners so Freeman knew he was gonna be getting something good.1 point

It was Trump's own staff who said he wanted generals like Hitler, not Democrats.1 point

Trump has brought it all on himself. He has used Nazi rhetoric and promoted violence on many occasions. He is nothing even close to Hitler at this time, but he sure seems fascinated with the idea. He has also accused Harris of being fascist and communist **** him!1 point

OK, I really can't argue with this. If the WP came out in print and said our owner and publisher is afraid of Trump's retaliation if he's elected so we're not endorsing anyone it would probably better accepted.1 point

I don't understand this mindset. What evidence could there possibly be? A woman alone in a room with two men and one of the men is dead. It's he said she said. Why is the man always innocent? There are men who are predators and we should stop them.1 point

That's the hope for Mize and Manning, that teams have enough hubris to say about themselves "we can fix him" and swap their number 6 prospect, a righthanded hitting middle infielder with a glove and some power.1 point

Welcome to the site. They won’t be patient. He showed some promise in the playoffs and his performance at the end of the season wasn’t terrible. But that’s not good enough. He has to get better. He’s in the plans for now because that’s the only option but they won’t let him get in their way if they see an opportunity. His status as a 1:1 will not interfere at all with a decision.1 point
