I agree with the bill that says TDS should be classified as a mental illness. I probably disagree with him on whch people have the illness though.3 points

He did that for a Class C team, after which he was rewarded with a promotion to a Class B team the following season, during which he walked 196 and struck out 150 in 103 innings, after which he received a promotion to Class A!2 points

I have no particular sympathy for Shep. As a broadcaster he made a very conscious decision about how to do his broadcast and it was the wrong one and he never adjusted - his fate was in his own hands to get better/fix what was wrong - and he never moved off his initial stance/style. People don't want the PBP to act like a sycophant with the player - they like the idea of the player as a regular guy, and the PBP needs to stand in for the listeners as a regular guy having a regular back and forth with the player, just like you would want to do yourself if you were there. Shep never went there, and to to me that's what was always wrong with his work. His approach was "nobody wants to hear what I think when there is a ball player next to me" but that is exactly wrong. Look at all the popular sports broadcasting/podcasting etc. Your job is to be an interesting equal - not just lap up whatever the other guy says. If you aren't bringing anything yourself, there is no reason for you to be there - get someone who believes he knows something about the game and is willing express himself and maybe go back and forth with the player - etc. It was especially dumb when Shep would ask the player some question that was so trivially basic that any baseball fan could answer it but he still refused to speak for himself. Those kinds or interchanges were always too obsequious and stagey to be any kind of good game coverage. The idea that you had to have played the game to know the game is nonsense - had he never heard of Patrick, Ernie, Vin, Red, Dickerson, even Costas? Do dumb ****, get bad results.2 points

In fairness to Shep, if you parse his tweet. I believe him when he says Gibby prepares better than anybody he's worked with... when you realize they saddled him with Morris and Monroe, that is undoubtedly true.2 points

Let's say it wasn't Gibby's choice to leave. You know what? I'm fine with that. There comes a time when all of us won't be able to keep up anymore. For most of us it will be age. Most people avoid this by retiring when they get the chance, but for those of us who love what we do, there will be a time where we just can't do it anymore and when that happens, the ones who don't recognize it will be asked to leave. It sucks for Gibby, but it was pretty clear last year that he was really struggling. Doesn't make the Tigers the bad guys here. They didn't do it for personal reasons, they likely didn't do it to save money, they did it because it was painfully clear. Parkinsons' Sucks.2 points

I always put Dan on the audio feed over the MLB.tv video. Problem solved. Although I will miss Andy being on the radio with him. I thought it worked well because Dan is all business, which led Andy to moderate his propensity for clubhouse-like joking. When Andy is on with Jason there are no guardrails, so it can get to be really too much between the two of them as they start competing to top each other.1 point

How about this guy? https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=dalkow001ste One year, he struck out 262 and walked 262 in 170 innings.1 point

About all you can say about hitting well in ST is that it's better than hitting badly in ST. Seriously though, as much as ST results are denigrated, even if the outcomes don't much batter, they are directing his AB - what's he swinging at, what is he taking, who is he facing etc - so I think there is still useful info being gained there.1 point

Hinch said afterward that pulling him because of the dive was a jest - he was coming out anyway, but sure - there was barb even in the joke.1 point

What's the point of divisions then if winning it gets you nothing, not even a road playoff game? The unbalanced schedule makes the entire NFL playoff system "unfair" really.1 point

I wish we had a pitcher like Ryne Duren of days of old with Coke bottle glasses, and a reputation for unpredictable wildness just to scare the heck out of Bregman. This is not the better side of my personality, speaking by the way.1 point

We should just keep Davenport in a bubble till a late season game with playoff implications then activate him. That way we'd atleast use his 1 allotted game on a high leverage one instead of wasting it on an early season non divisional one.1 point

Ojulari was on my second tier of guys I wanted behind the big names like Hendrickson. I would have signed him for that contract for sure.1 point

I hear Riley was diving for a ball in CF yesterday. In an exhibition game! So Hinch pulled him out of the game. Sometimes he needs to protect players from themselves1 point

I love this every man for himself mindset from people with millions of dollars. Let's all start out from scratch and see how long heel spurs lasts.1 point

I'd be very surprised if they DID otherwise. It won't be the non-rate-change that is important... What will be important is what they SAY...1 point

Among space fans there's a lot of arguing about the whole "stranded" and "rescue" operation regarding Butch and Suni yesterday. For those who don't pay attention to those things, they were not stranded and not rescued. They flew a Boeing Starliner in a Crewed Test Flight, one of the final, if not final, steps to certify Boeing in the Commercial Crew Program. They didn't like something on the service module so rather than take an unnecessary risk, they kept them on the ISS and they became part of Crew 9 which was coming up to the ISS a few months later, minus 2 astronauts. THis was all done in the summer of 2024. Now we have Musk and Trump trying to take credit for things already decided and Musk saying things like "We offered Biden a chance to go get them but he turned it down". That would have been a dumb decision, wasteful, and not really practical as it's not like driving a car.1 point

They should have just hired a new team when they brought Benetti here instead of trying to fit him into a sub par broadcast.1 point

Been saying it all year, but Stew should be averaging more than 19 minutes per game. I'd like to see him closer to 25, especially once the playoffs start.1 point

Because of the ages of my kids I went through a period where I missed out on some great shows. Just didn't have time. From around 2006-2013. Always had stuff going on in the evenings and by the time we finished it all, it was 9 pm and we were tired. When Better Call Saul was announced we decided to binge BB to be on target. Mad Men and The Wire are two shows I really want to get into but there's too much stuff now to stay on top of. We started The Leftovers and also want to go back to that and finish off, especially after watching Severance and White Lotus. And White Lotus... damn. Started slow but this last week was legendary. I like that show because it's easy to watch. I love severance but it works the mind. That's good. But I like the Sunday night vibe of White Lotus, you can chill and enjoy the troubles of the uber rich without having to concentrate and pay attention to every detail. There's a place for style.1 point

Just threading in for your post in the other thread, I'm torn on what the right move was, but the bigger problem is that he clearly doesn't have the pulse of his caucus. Add on top his latest media tour, he's just clearly not the right voice for this moment. Honestly not sure who is among Senate Dems, which is the worrying part...1 point

I would emphasize the point though, that attendance revenue is not the same as trying to serve the most fans in person. The teams have learned that you can generate more revenue by restricting the availability of tickets (small parks) and loading up on lux box sales. So to me the distinction matters that maximizing ticket revenue should not be understood to mean wanting to get the most participation of the public in person at the games.1 point

Predators recognize predators and see the rest of us as sheep. The problem is we think everyone is a sheep just like us but they are not like us at all. They gravitate towards each other, strength in numbers. The rest of us need to wake up and protect people from these violent and abusive men.1 point

Hinch is Dr. Frankenstein and the roster is The Monster. Outside of Greene, Torres and Rogers (sort of), the rest of the team is just going to be pieced together and it's either going to dazzle us with a stirring rendition of Puttin On The Ritz or it's going to freak out at the sight of fire and destroy everything.1 point

Duren is allowing opponents to shoot 61.3% at the rim this year. It is the bottom third of all centers. I thought maybe his number would be trending down since most feel he is playing better defense. Since the new year, he is allowing an even worse 65.7% and is almost dead last among all centers. For reference. Stew is 45.7% for the year and 46.2% since the new year. Both in the top 5 for centers.1 point

They are not going go 54-28 with him in the line-up again, but I agree they really need him healthy. He is probably going to be 3-4 wins beter than his replacement and, given where they are at, that could very well be the difference between making the playoffs and going home.1 point

It is excellent. It was initially supposed to be an ER reboot (John Wells is attached as EP) and Noah Wyle was going to be John Carter. But Michael Crichton's estate nixed it, so they moved it to a different city and changed Wyle's character. Not only the name, but other details as well. The Crichton estate is suing. So that means any TV show that centers around an ER is automatically theirs now? I don't think so. It's excellent and I don't mind the medical jargon, I worked at a hospital for a decade and know some of it, but a lot of it is newer too, the reason for a new reboot is how things have changed in 10 years. What I don't know, I look up and I love that. They are not dumbing it down. Thanks for that. Too many dumbed down TV shows on as it is. It would be hilarious if old ER cast member started popping up in cameos as an F-You to Crichton's estate for the lawsuit. They were pretty loyal to John Wells. I loved that they brought up the Freedom House Ambulance Service. They were the true first paramedics, but they were staffed by black medics in black neighborhoods so it took a long time for them to get recognized. The Pitt is doing a great job of being about Pittsburgh. A ton of little details.1 point

It’s definitely time for Gibby to hang up the microphone, unfortunately. I enjoyed him in the booth, but the typical viewer is going to find him tough to listen to. Wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully the Tigers find ways to keep him involved- occasional tv guest, honorary assistant coach, etc. Baseball is something he loves and taking that type of thing away from an aging and sick person can be devastating. He’s done more than enough good for all of us and the organization to still have some type of regular role.1 point

Gibby was in the park when we were in Sarasota to see the Tigers/Orioles game in February. The photo below was taken pregame. Not surprisingly his mobility was somewhat challenged but all things considered, very understandable. I stated this prior, he really didn’t need to be there (he should not have been there). He sat in the very hot sun off to our right for the first half of the game and moved up to sit in the shaded concourse after that. If he had anyone with him we never saw them. I honestly felt for the guy. Gibby leaving the booth is very unfortunate because of the reasons he’s having to do so. I enjoyed his contributions in the booth. I hope he doesn’t become invisible from this point on.1 point
