This all seems pretty strategic. You get 8 dem senators who are retiring and/or not up for re-election end the shutdown, you let the rest of the caucus attack them, then you drop these Epstein emails to focus attention back on Dirty Don.2 points

What I like about this thread is, despite what we may bitch about day to day during the season... it was much much worse. We evolved to first world problems.2 points

ID's are not as hard to get as the left likes to pretend. Many cities and states already have programs to help get ID's and those certainly could be expanded. Additionally, getting ID's into the hands of every eligible voter, would disproportionately improve the lives of people of color by improving their ability to get a job, get a bank account, give more access to social programs, and even improve the justice system as it would put more people of color on juries. Getting everyone an ID should be a goal if you truly want to help people.2 points

And they will never, ever, ever stop supporting him because at this point, their only objective is for you to never be able to hang "I told you so" over their heads. They will support the abject destruction of America and even themselves just to avoid ever admitting to you, me, and people like us that they could ever have been wrong.2 points

I love this post except for the final sentence. Harris has not yet been able to establish the limits he will go to in the free agent market to bring top talent aboard. Sure, he didn’t get Soto or Ohtani. But remember, Detroit has never been a top destination for those guys during his tenure. He’s still working on building us up to being at that level, as much as he can. The time has not been right, either in the team he could field around a top tier guy, or in the perception among top tier guys of Detroit as a real destination. I think we’re closer than ever, and maybe Harris makes the move this winter that gets us firmly into that conversation. But we just haven’t been that yet.2 points

Bump; Commentator; Mr. President...tell us the story about how the other NFL owners voted to not allow you to buy a team. And then: Commentator; Now Mr. Presidrnt...tell us how you destroyed the USFL by changing their schedule to go up against the NFL. How did that work out for you? Another failed business attempt? Have you actually had any successful business ventures, not including the grift of selling terrible products to your sucker base?2 points

The auto industry and its feeder industries went through a bit of a downsizing in the late 80s, early 90s. there went your tax base. remember when Suh left the Lions for the dolphins? 4.5% tax versus 0% tax is a big deal when youre making that kind of money. And youre a hockey fan, how many times in the last few years have you heard teams complain about losing free agents to low tax environments like florida or texas or vegas? tons. Detroit is not NY, Chicago, or LA where the cultural amenities, nightlife, and business opportunities outweigh tax considerations. Marginal things like taxes will hurt a destination like detroit. look, its not like detroit cant get free agents, it just has to overpay to get them or offer a championship window. Or both.1 point

Looking ahead a bit I expect they give some guys like Decker the week off against the Giants. Short week after that with a huge game against the Packers on Thursday. And they shouldn’t need a full effort to beat the interim coached G-men1 point

as noted, FLA and Tx among MLB states have no IT. So that's an edge for them, but among the rest that do, MI at a flat 4.25% is one of the better ones for high earners. Funny thing is that business taxes in MI used to be higher than a lot places, and when the GOP was in power in the ~90s or so a lot of taxes got cut. Of course, I'm also old enough to remember when we had good schools and good roads in MI. We have neither now. I'm just guessing there might be a connection.1 point

**** LSU for making me take Brian Kelly's side on anything. You assholes signed him, you have a contract. You fired him because he didn't win enough. That's on you. Pay him. These buyouts are nuts, but that's the offer they gave him. I hate both sides so much. College football is ridiculous.1 point

Or just apply positional value metrics after a players O-War and D-War are rated against the actual replacement player at the position - People could still have the post positional adjusted shorthand number but also get a more realistic take on the player by just stepping a single level deeper into the data. With the positional adjustment put in before the calc of dWar, it makes the data more opaque (and counter-intuitive) than it needs to be -- IMHO1 point

It basically says the Granderson trade made sense at the time based on where the team was at. And it says the Scherzer non trade, even though we knew he wasn't going to resign, made sense based on where the team was at. IMO, it is confirming what you and those of us who think it would be foolish to trade Skubal now believe with the team coming off 2 post season appearances and being favorites to make it to the postseason again. Also, an article in the Athletic from the GM meetings also implies that Tiger Brass is saying they want to win with Skubal.1 point

Put me down as believing, deep down, that they know it's bad. But the thing is that it's not over either.... more will end up coming out. And even any move that he could make to silence or cover it up (such as commuting or pardoning Maxwell) will end up having a Streisand effect anyway. It will not end the questions or the issue. This is a pretty good offramp, but suspect that for as bad many of the diehards deep down know it is, they'll blow right past the exit as they always do.1 point

I don't know how this works for MAGA delusionalists. But know that people in the W. Bush sphere knew that they had f;d up Iraq even while they did all the things to try to fix it. They knew it was bad. Just like Biden's people knew he was past his prime and needed to step aside even while the Biden family fought that tooth and nail. So, these people defending this here are well aware that they are defending a pedo criminal. They know.1 point

No, thank you. I like Tucker, maybe, for 7-or-8/sub-300 with team options, but definitely not 10+/400+ with player options. Too injured too recently for Sotobucks and Sotoyears.1 point

Goff: He needs a good team around him and McVay to be successful. That’s why we need Stafford. Stafford was 0-3 in the playoffs in 12 years. That’s because he didn’t have a good team around him and a coach like McVay. Hall of fame.1 point

That was an open-hand slap after being shoved by Payne. If you wanna flag him for that, cool, but trying to act like it was a "punch" is dumb, and trying to equate it to the actual haymaker Payne threw is 200-proof cope.1 point

I look at it this way. I was a left handed batter. If I had to face Skubal I would just tell the manager to pencil me in for a day off, because that's what I would be doing if I had to bat.1 point

PS: If we have a chance at signing Skubal to a long-term contract... I think those chances are SIGNIFICANTLY higher if we sign Bregman or Tucker, or both, this winter. IMO.1 point

Man you are amazing!!!! how did you find those videos of Sanchez and Logan?!?! To scrub out the exact spots. So cool to see full 2004-2005 games as well. I know the Tigers didn't win a lot in those days but those are very nostalgic years for me. Man I still can't believe you found those. How did you come up with those videos????1 point

The Tigers are simply not on par as a consideration as are the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, or Giants, and Detroit as a city is simply not as attractive a destination as New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Five of those teams have had championships within living memory of ballplayers, who grew up with all of those teams being dominant at one point or another, and the Mets are a NYC team with a huge cultural footprint befitting their location. You can't wish away the huge advantage these teams have in attracting top tier talent. Detroit is also not as attractive a destination as San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas, or Houston, which are all warm-weather cities with very prominent Spanish-speaking communities, as well as being close to offseason homes for a lot of guys (although if they ever wanted to spend as a franchise, non-destination Miami could easily blow all four of those out of the water), so it's easy for their families and long-time friends to travel to watch them play at home. Seattle also has a leg up over Detroit as a destination both for its youthful coolness and its proximity to Japan. Of the remaining destinations, I would say Detroit also firmly lags behind Toronto (recent WS team, Vlad is there); Philadelphia (solid contender on the east coast, lots of superstars already there); and Atlanta (legacy franchise with a recent ring that is also close to home for many guys). Despite their recent run of Central Division titles, I don't think I would include Milwaukee, since beyond playing in a dumpy town just like Detroit, the Brewers are also known to be in the 15th to 20th range in payroll. Speaking of payroll, the 14 teams I have named as destinations are all in the top 15 in payroll. Only the Angels are up there with them, and they are not a destination because players can easily see how they can't win as a team even with Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. I think the Tigers could be very competitive for second-tier free agents with any of the remaining 16 teams. Players want to go where the money and action is, and they also like to go where there are paid superstars already on long term deals. That last part was Detroit once, but then they famously blew it all up. What top-tier superstar would want to commit to a team that would do something like that?1 point

McConnell had the luxury of a party voting constituency with one-track ideologies on his side. The Democratic voting bloc is a coalition of disparate interests whose ardor for the party waxes and wanes with the priority their interests enjoy at that given moment.1 point

One problem with voter ID is that certain parties within state government can manipulate what is and is not considered valid ID with the apparent purpose of suppressing the vote among certain classes of people. Some states require voter ID strictly and only official state issue; others allow non-photo ID such as fishing licenses. In such cases, certain types of people more likely to engage in those activities are privileged with looser requirements to prove their identification than others who are not given to those types of activities. Native American communities, low-income, elderly, and rural voters are disproportionately affected by voter photo ID laws. This is partially because photo IDs aren’t as common as many people assume: 18% of all citizens over the age of 65, 16% of Latino voters, 25% of Black voters, and 15% of low-income Americans lack acceptable photo ID. Elderly and low-income voters may not have the availability, financial resources, or mobility to obtain the necessary identification, and rural voters may face significant barriers to obtaining the necessary documentation due to their geographic isolation. Further, many rural and Native Americans born at home or on reservations and tribal lands lack the mandated paperwork needed to obtain a government-issued ID that fits the legal requirements to vote. In short, many citizens find it difficult to obtain government photo IDs both because the ability to get to the facility to obtain it is limited or blocked, and because the necessary documentation, such as a birth certificate, needed to prove one's identification to obtain valid photo ID for voting is often difficult or expensive to acquire. Aside from class and racial discrimination, there are other peculiar ways voter photo ID laws turn voters away from the polls. For example, people who change their last names after marriage or divorce and don’t have a permissible ID that reflects their name on the voter rolls may be unable to cast a ballot. College students are also uniquely impacted by these laws, as their primary form of ID can often be a student ID, which isn’t always accepted as a valid form for voting. In all these cases, voter ID laws deny eligible voters access to the ballot box. One other problem is that on the ground, the law can be applied on an uneven and discretionary basis. Poll workers can take it upon themselves to choose to ask certain people showing up for every piece of required ID needed to cast a ballot and refuse them if they are missing any, or if they consider even one piece to be invalid based on their own discretion; while the same poll worker can wave through someone else without requiring proof because the poll worker knows and likes that person, who may not even be legally registered to vote.1 point

Nook Logan's entire amazing career was like a dream. There is no way to sufficiently replicate his existence on a video. Was he even real or was it just something we imagined?1 point
