  1. I am curious how many fans who followed the Tigers from 2017 to 2023, and watched Miggy become a below average player on an unmovable contract, would actually want the Tigers to sign Skubal to a 10 year deal. A lot of media folks are still tossing around the 10 year $400M number. I would think a 10 year contract for a 30 year old pitcher would be a stretch for almost any team and a definite no for the Tigers.

  3. I think the short contracts are good for the game. It gives a smaller market team a chance to go all in wuithout getting stuck with a contract for 10 years. Like the Tigers and Valdez.

  4. I do not want the Tigers to sign Skubal to a 10/400 deal. It is likely the last few years could be ugly, perhaps very ugly, and the Tigers cannot risk having 40M+ in dead money on their books. That is a risk the bigger markets can take. 5 x 50 does not get it done, but I would try, and then watch him walk.

  5. The Miggy contract was painful because of his decline and the negative impact on the team. Skubal is in his prime. There is not a Skubal trade that will make the Tigers better in 2026. The Tigers are in a position to win now. The Angels with Ohtani were in the midst of a long string of losing seasons. Huge return for one year of Skubal is a theory not based on precedent.

  7. I would be willing to trade Skubal for a kings ransom. Unfortunately, that is not an option. Look at the Burnes trade for the Brewers, the best player they got was Joey Ortiz, who was the 45h ranked prospect on fangraphs, and he is projected as a 2 WAR player entering his age 27 season. He's a solid player, but he is not an impact player, and not a player that meaningfully changes the outlook of your franchise over a 3-5 year period. If you have a good scouting and development organization, and don't have an incredibly cheap and deadbeat ownership, you will have no problem consistently acquiring/developing solid 2 WAR guys, missing out on a guy like that will never be what holds your team back. I checked the fangraphs top 20 prospects from 2014-2019. In that period 87 different players appeared on the lists. Of those, only 20 players had 3 or more 3+ WAR seasons during the 6 years of control. So less than 25% of top 20 prospects actually turned into consistent impact players. And the fact is you would be lucky to get a single top 20 prospect for Skubal, in all likelihood the best you'd get is two top 100 prospects, one of them probably around 50th and the second more of a back half guy. And guess what? Both of those guys are unlikely to turn out to be even average big league starters. The reality is that the Tigers would not receive a package for Skubal that will have any meaningful impact on the teams outlook for the next 6 seasons. If the Tigers trade Skubal and get one player who gives them 12 WAR over their 6 years of control, that would be an objectively successful return. Sorry, but that level of player is not hard to come by, and that is not an exciting return. I'd rather give it one more shot with Skubal, the franchises outlook over the next 6 years after this one will not change whether they trade Skubal or not.

  15. Skenes was paid 875K for his 6.5 WAR last year; the Pirates got a superstar performance for peanuts, and then re-allocated the money they would have had to pay a superstar pitcher right into the pockets of the owner, trotting out a bottom 5 payroll. Clearly the only solution to this problem is to limit the earning power of players, so billionaire owners can make higher profits.

  21. I truely believe he has no intellect. He does have a certain kind of smarts which allows him to manipulate people to no end, but his intellect (ability to use logic and analyze complex things) is pretty much nonexistent. Some people still think he's just pretending to be dumb and just messing with us, but I think what you see is what he is. That is what might save us, although we won't necessarily be safe from his handlers.

  22. Who says the Tigers didn’t offer him a contract? Based on everything I have read, they did and he declined it. Also, based on the salary committed to Valdez, it would be very hard to believe that the Tigers offered anything less to Skubal, and they almost certainly offered him something more. But Boras seems to have pegged Skubal’s value around 10/$400 million, which is a long way from the neighborhood that Detroit was probably playing in. If 10/$400 million is the price, I don’t want Detroit to pay it, especially having witnessed the last few years of Cabrera’s contract.

  26. Bottom line, this trade wasn't about Huerter. It was about moving Jaden Ivey. He clearly wasn't happy, he never improved in the areas that matter (defense, finishing, turnovers), there was no room for him to develop here, they weren't going to give him the money he wanted this offseason, and he had a 30M dollar cap hold that would have hurt the team's flexibility in the offseason. There was obviously no trade market for him, so they go what they could get before this stretched into the offseason. That said, Huerter is a better player than Jaden Ivey. It's marginal, but he is. Better finisher inside the arc, better career 3pt shooter, better playmaker, and a better defender. He's also an expiring contract, which is better for the team this offseason. They also have the potential to move from 29 to 22 in a good draft. That's actually a significant jump whether you're drafting cheap talent or using the pick as an asset in a trade. I'm disappointed they didn't trade him sooner to get more out of it, but let's be realistic. Jaden's injuries complicated the trade situation big time and every team in the league was seeing the same thing we were seeing every time Jaden stepped on the court.

  32. She is incredible in the independent film Columbus. She teamed up with Parker Posey in that film and it was a tremendous cast. I spent some time in Columbus Indiana in the early 70s and it’s truly an enchanting town due to the architecture and the beautiful boulevards which make it just amazing. I never watched the film Split which she was also in because I’m the father of daughters and seeing young women terrorized is simply a place I can’t go.

  34. Did I already start a Carlos Monnarez appreciation thread? Its sort of evergreen for all Detroit Sports. elements of a classic CM article. take the most recent sporting event by a team, extrapolate a ridiculous subsequent prediction show no appreciation for actual Detroit sports history because he grew up as a Dodger fan Shoot hot takes like the love child of Stephen A Smith and Tony Kornheiser So, he's saying the Tigers have been humbled by the arb ruling in favor of Skubal. Ok, well. Sure.

  35. I think that Skenes could ask for $32M in his 1st arbitration year. He is allowed to ask, but the arbitrators are supposed to focus on 1st and 2nd years salaries. If they think special circumstances merit $32M, so be it. Skenes, like Skubal and Ohtani, are unicorns. I have no problem if they are are compensated as such.

  36. Not the biggest Jenkins fan. But I'll take him over Ball 10 times out of 10. Ball shoots 30% from the field and 27% from three. Jenkins shoots 38% from three. Jenkins has similar assist numbers on less minutes. Neither is worth mentioning on defense.

  40. What a fascinating case. I think each side had good arguments to support their view, and on a three judge panel with fairly flexible guidance, anything can happen. I’m specifically interested in the precedent set here. The fact that nothing like this had happened before was relevant, but it’s also true that a player having the specific attributes that Skubal had was never presented to a panel. Most of the preceding cases for big money were settlements. Credit to Skubal and Boras for risking millions argue their position.
