Reese Olson went 5IP 2R(both unearned) and 6Ks today. After struggling for most of the summer this is now his 4th start out of the last 5 where he has given up 2 runs or less and in that time he has a 39 to 6 K:BB ratio so it's good to see him finishing the year strong.

Week One: Philadelphia Eagles (0-0) @ Detroit Lions (0-0)

On top of Foles, Garrapolo went to a SB once and damn near did it again last year and I would say he is middle of the pack at best, Alex Smith/Kaep went to a SB, then there was of course Goff with the Rams, Flacco won a SB, Eli won twice including one of the years where he led the league in INTs and posted a highly mediocre 52 QBR. So there's been quite a few outliers the past 15 or so years and the narrative that you NEED elite QB play to get to the SB is false. It certainly helps but it's not mandatory like needing Superstars in the NBA to win in today's game. -
The MLB is set to vote in the proposed rule changes tomorrow, they consist of eliminating of the shift, bigger bases and a pitch clock. I have no idea if any will pass but if they do I wonder how much if any they will benefit the Tigers. In theory you would think they would help our offfense more than others since we don't hit the long ball so not having the shift may help our slap hitters find more holes, but again that is just in theory have no idea if any data support that. Otoh though we're not a big strikeout staff so the lack of shift may hurt us more than others in the run prevention standpoint so it could all end up being a wash atleast in the near future.

Sure hiring a guy from a winning organization doesnt guarantee he will be a success and you could end up with Bob Quinn but given the choice Id rather go after a guy from a winning organization than a losing one.

Definely agree about the reds, I think the last Pistons jersey I got was a Billups red one. Loved that look.

Saw a tweet that says that Ohtani has the same career OPS+ as Jeff Bagwell while having the same ERA+ as Pedro Martinez, obviously a much smaller sample but it's just mind boggling the true generational talent we are witnessing. -
You old timers hate any new jerseys though.

Post game show says this is the first time in Tigers history that 3 rookies hit a HR in the same game. I find that pretty hard to believe that it never happened in their long history but apparently it's the case. -
They've gotten some hate on social media but I don't mind them especially since they are supposed to be replacing the boring gray/ silver jerseys. I think I wouldve preferred something centered around a red jersey though.

Judge with number 55, he's currently 2 games ahead of Maris' AL Record pace. Btw he currently has 19 more than anybody in MLB and 23 more than anybody in the AL. That's what like 55% or so more than anybody else? I wonder when the last time somebody did that?

Ok this is cool! -
Michigan moves all the way up to 4 in latest AP rankings. You knew they were going to pass Utah and ND but a little surprising they passed A&M and Clemson too since they both won. Neither was dominant but they weren't exactly close games either which is what you usually need to get passed by a team that didn't play a great team themselves.

Not sure if it's cause our fans are this pumped for the season or not cause Philly fans tend to travel well and I know their fanbase is drinking their own kool aid this year so that could be the reason as well. -
Santana and Jung with the Tiger special, the otherwise rare higher obp than slugging but we have a few of those on the main roster.

Even when the Tigers were good they would regularly get crushed in Anaheim, so no surprise this happens when they are bad. This season can't get over with fast enough. -

Yep or Robinson Cano would leave the freaking NY Yankees to sign with the then last place Mariners, or just this past year guys like Seagar and Semien leaving playoff teams to sign with the Rangers who have been bottom feeders about as long as the current Tigers. -
I admittedly was somewhat guilty of this but I think many fans got sucked into believing that the way we played for the last 4 1/2 months last year where we were close to .500 was our norm when in actually that wasn't. IIRC many projection systems had us at around 70 wins going into this year and again IIRC many people thought that was way low but it's looking like that was probably correct and 70ish wins was probably what we would've won under normal circumstances, maybe could've gotten to 80 if things went right or maybe only win 60 if things went wrong like what happened. I guess the only thing that would've been worse is that if we finished with 100 losses despite all our players having good seasons, that would show you that we have very little room for improvement with the current roster but that of course wasn't the case.

In theory there are but historically the team that offers the most money gets the player in MLB particularly if that team also has a guaranteed full time spot for said player. -

I mean I'll believe it when I see it to but if there is a FA we want to play 3B and are willing to pony up the money there is no reason he won't sign here, guys go where the money at. -

Money talks in sports but out of all sports it seems to talk the most in MLB where guys seemingly aren't as considered with the talent around them as in other sports. I say seemingly cause you don't nearly hear about guys demanding trades in MLB as you do in other sports and guys have gone to worst teams for more money which is something you don't see as much elsewhere. We'll definitely have to overpay for any potential guy but if we offer more money than another team than there is no reason why we couldn't sign any FA if we chose to do so. -
Yep seriously never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect this season to end up being as bad as it has been. I'm not talking just record wise cause I thought they could be a 90 to 100 team if things didn't go right but I thought if they got to that it would be more from bullpen implosions, bad luck in 1 run games and maybe a couple guys having down years. I thought though even if that were to happen we'd atleast get some bright spots that would give us hope for 2023 but that hasn't been the case at all. The rare bright spots have come from back end starters or some relievers who very likely aren't going to repeat themselves next year.

It's crazy to think that the Marlins got Gallen AND Sandy Alcantara in the Ozuna trade talk about a true haul! They since swapped Gallen for Chisholm but crazy to think that they managed to get arguably the two of the best starters in the NL for I believe only a year of Ozuna. A rare blunder by the Cardinals and shows that even the best run franchises can make huge mistakes.

Anybody see how pathetic the reigning B1G West champs Iowa and particularly their offense looked yesterday against *checks notes* South Dakota State University? They finished with a total of 160 yards of offense, punted 10 times and their QB had a QBR of 1.1. They ended up winning 7-3 not thanks to a TD but 2 safeties and a FG, insanely bad offense.
-
You see it every year where there is a team(s) that isn't nearly as good as their preseason ranking so perhaps one of those teams this year is Oregon but if they really are as good as their ranking then damn UGA might end up being even better this year. It's like they just reloaded their drafted players while benefiting from Benson improving at QB.

Well with this loss it guarantees are 6th straight losing season and 7th out of the last 8. The late 00s early 10s might as well be another lifetime ago at this point.
