Outside of Bonds, Pujols is probably the best hitter that I seen in my lifetime. Guys like Miggy, A-Rod, Trout and maybe a couple others have had years where they were comparable but the greatness of him for those first 10 years was something that I have never seen sans Bonds.

Tigers Hire Scott Harris as President of Baseball Operations
RandyMarsh replied to oblong's topic in Detroit Tigers
For a catcher in this environment at his age that's pretty damn good, I mean there's a reason he was ranked as highly as he was. Regardless though I don't really care about our catcher at this point, our production there has been middle of the pack this year and that's despite Barnhart being one of the worst hitters in baseball. If we just got even half way decent production from our backup we'd probably be in the top 10, it's actually one of our better positions at this point relative to the league. -

I don't know if it would cost Tork or Greene but if a guy was a top 30 prospect coming into the season I'm sure it would take quite a bit to get him especially if he has held his own up here. -

Tork finally gets rewarded for a hard hit ball, laser to LF for a ground rule double to score Castro to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead. -

Yeah it's weird that he can never lay off of it no matter who the pitcher is. I know it's a tough pitch to lay off of cause pitchers make a living getting guys to chase that but he just can't lay off it to save his life. He obviously doesn't have the eye sight to pick up any differences in spin but with 2 strikes you think he'd just pick a part of the plate, if the ball doesnt start in the inner third than just lay off of it cause it's probably the slider out of zone, if you end up taking a called third strike so be it. Yes I know it's easy to say behind the CPU but it just seems like there has to be a way to help him with that. -

Javy fouls off two 99mph FBs at the top of zone before K'ing on the slider low and away, I swear I don't know why pitchers even bother throwing something other than that slider when they get him to two strikes. -

Yeah E-Rod has not looked good, lets just hope it's because of the crazy year he has had and not something that is going to continue going forward. -
Btw unless I missed somebody Cade was the only Piston to make the list landing in the mid 30s, 1 spot ahead of Mobley for highest ranking for last year's rookies. From this class Paulo, Jabari and Murray made it the latter of which surprised me cause I thought the talk was that the NBA folks like Ivey more but he didn't make the list.

Barring some off the field issue coming to surface there is no way Hinch is getting fired and certainly not Fetter. Coolbaugh and Hessman may be looking for work though.

I see Steph at 5 and I think there is no way 4 players are better than him but then you see the 4 ahead of him and its hard to say if he is better than any of them right now. Personally I think Id probably put him ahead of Embiid but not sure I could go any higher.

Fyi I think by Lakeland he meant Spring Training.

Week Three: Detroit Lions (1-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (1-1)
RandyMarsh replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Lions history suggests this is the type of game they'd lose but I think it's time to stop comparing them to previous teams since this is a whole new regime from top to bottom but still I just don't have a good feeling about this one. I think Jefferson is determined to be a man possessed after how he looked MNF and were not gonna generate the consistent pressure to keep Cousins from finding him. So with that said I'm going 34-24 Minnesota. -

Been busy today so haven't gotten around to reading the article but I saw on The Athletic there was an article titled something like "How the Lions old school offense is confusing defenses", for those that have time it may be worth a read. -
Watch Saban Lee turn into Spencer Dinwiddie part deux.
-
I feel like I'm missing something with the Bogdanovic trade, I know he is getting older and his defense is subpar but to only have to give up Lee and Olynyk for him seems too good to be true. Somebody will probably fail a physical and the trade will be voided.

Yep and the old timers/anti peds guys still treat it as the "real" record.

With the albatrosses of Pujols and Prince Fielders contract fresh on the mind of MLB owners I just have a hard time believing that even if Cabrera went to FA that if we offered him 250 million that any team wouldve topped that but I do admit that is just speculation. To me you sign guys two years out when they are in their early to mid 20s like they did the first time they did with Miggy but you're playing with fire when doing it with guys in their 30s and unfortunately the Tigers got burned. I will soften my original stance though and say that while I disagreed with the timing even at the time, but if you wanted to make sure there was no way you lose him even if that means possibly overpaying or looking foolish at the end of the deal then it probably was best to do it then and not wait and risk Miggy getting frustrated kinda like Max did.
-
Why was it then or not at all? Is it illegal to sign a guy a year from FA or during FA? His stock wasn't going to go up with another great year, his value was at its peak you saved no money by doing it early. You took on all of the risk without taking any sorta discount.
-
Between Miggy, Victor's second contract and Zimm we spent damn near a half billion dollars for close to or negative WAR. Just a laughably bad ROI.
-
The thing that made the Miggy contract so bad aside from his performance of course was the timing, they didn't need to give it to him, they still had him under control for 2 more seasons. Why not wait a year or even wait till free agency to see if he shown any chinks in the armor, another player(s) from the system broke out that could take his spot or if the overall franchise nosedived and you wanted to go into a full rebuild t? They signed him at his absolute peak value for peak value, nobody could've foreseen this type of collapse but he would've needed to perform at peak numbers through the whole contract to make it make sense from a dollars to production standpoint. My theory has always been that Mr. I just didn't know how much time he had left and he wanted to make sure that he rewarded Miggy and that he retired as a Tiger cause if Mike were to die before Miggy's contract came up there was a strong chance that his son or new owner if team was sold wouldn't have paid him.

When he's on the phone and there's a little miscommunication I'm sure he says "Can you hear me now...Good!" while chuckling after saying it. -
Judge didn't get 61 tonight but went 2-4 with 2 doubles and walk to raise his September SLUGGING of 1.017 and OPS of 1.525, all things considered(deadened ball, better pitching, better defensive alignment, not seeing starters more than twice etc.) he may be having the best non Bonds season with the bat in any of our lifetimes or for the older posts adult lifetimes. And unlike Bonds his numbers aren't being aided by IBBs or the "unintentional intentional walk". A true generational type season.

Looking at the Lions schedule as of now I see the 2 games against Fields, 1 against Josh Allen and depending on Dak's health 1 against him as the only real threats to take off and run like Hurts did which killed them. The rest are pretty much drop back QBs, Rodgers may take off now and again but hardly enough at this point in his career to consider that much of a threat.
