Long ball is probably going to be the continuing problem for him though. The FB has plenty of mustard but he needs to find a way to give it a little more life. I used to think that about Skubal when he gave up 35 home runs in 2021. Melton has some good stuff. Quote
IdahoBert Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Man, I sure want to win this game tomorrow. Going back to the D with two wins in our pocket would be really special. Quote
IdahoBert Posted October 5 Posted October 5 The end of the regular season was kind of like a battery acid cocktail with razor blades in it. This is so much better. 1 Quote

At first Skubal only threw a 4 seamer - beginning his 2nd year and then increasing his 3rd, he added a 2 seamer/sinker - so he has two fastballs - if the life on the 4 seamers isn't the greatest, the batter is still going to see FBs going different directions because he can throw both kinds. Melton is about where Skubal was in his 2nd year - he has a sinker but doesn't throw it much yet so that same added confusion might work for him. It reminds me what a freak Verlander was. He only threw(throws) a 4 seamer but it has so much spin guys couldn't barrel up it even when he didn't throw it hard. And he would vary his FB velo by almost as much as the difference between Skubal's FB and Change, before he even threw an actual secondary pitch. 1 Quote
lordstanley Posted October 5 Posted October 5 (edited) Am back home in Vancouver. I tell ya, even before this loss, Mariners fans have a serious case of expecting impending doom, given the team’s history of failures notably in the 116-win year. They were so excited today, no trash talking at all (except for one guy who told me to “go s*ck Eminem’s c*ck" and whose appalled friends immediately shushed him), and after the final out many just sat there in stunned silence and sadness, they weren’t angry or anything. I was so freakin’ pumped I absolutely flew the 150 miles on the highway between T-Mobile Park and my home. Soundtrack for part of it was listening to the final innings of Dan & Dan’s radio broadcast archived at mlb.com. Now I’m still antsy, might grab my headlamp and go for a jog. Go get ‘em, Tigers! IdahoBert Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Yeah, as much as their optimism rubs me the wrong way I do feel bad for the fan base. If it weren’t for the fact that my own fan base is my home, my heart, my sustenance, I would be on their side, but I can’t be. And when you think of all the great players that came through Seattle who left because the team couldn’t or wouldn’t hold onto them they’re sort of like the Marlins of the Northwest without ever winning a World Series. antrat Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Melton was the star of this game IMO. That kid has tons of potential. 1 Quote

SoCalTiger Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Mariners manager major Boo Boo not bringing in a lefty to face Carpenter in the 5th. Managers don't win games so much but they sure can lose them. THANK YOU. Quote

The guys in the booth didn't seem to be picking up on it very clearly, but we all know Carp feasts on high fastballs. But Kirby decided to go with his best stuff (If I'm going to get beat, they are going to beat my best pitch"). I thought the Tigers got lucky in the same regard with Raleigh. As per his statcast maps, like most power hitters, you pitch him away as RH batter. But his data says he is more vulnerable inside as LHB, the Tigers mostly pitched him away anyway. Quote

If the guys in the both got the same feed they weren't seeing it either. Quote
