Their starting premise should be .500 for the season. They replaced injured players (Rogers, Turnbull, Boyd) with equal or better replacements (Barnhart, Ed Rod - likely with more to come after the lockout ends). They took their weakest position (SS) and make it their strongest position (Baez). Baez is about a 5 WAR player. Our previous SSs were -5. That give us perhaps 10 additional wins (not even considering improvement from other young players, Mize, Skubal, Manning, Soto, Fundy, Cisnero, Candy, Baddoo, Hill). I agree that folks have trouble believing this team's upside - but it will all depend on pitching health. Lost our catcher. Lost two OFers who collided with each other - and still played a bit over .500 for five months. 77-85. Eliminate the horrific start and we'd have been more like 83-79. Fans complained about the pen last year, but they were surprisingly good at finishing off wins. The Tigers will go into the year with all kinds of guys that should be able to supplement the BP: Wentz, maybe Faedo, Roni Garcia, Olsen, Ty Maddon was supposed to be nearly ML ready. Year to year bullpen performance is so erratic, that's it's always hard to make reliable projections. You could take all the bullpens in baseball and predict their order of success based on a random number generator and you might do just as well as if you tried to figure it out systematically! I would've mortgaged the farm to get him when he was available. But between Soto, Cisnero, Funky, Wentz, Olsen, and a few others, I think they'll be good again overall. 90 wins is a good goal to shoot for. I am at the 83 to 85 win range for the Tigers, for 2022, assuming the season starts on time. With a 14 team playoff, 87 wins should get a team in.
