The Detroit Tigers are a pathetic baseball team.

I would rather watch my grandsons little league baseball team.

It’s this bad: I would rather watch your grandson’s little league team and i don’t know you or what town you live in.

Perhaps Hinch is going all April/May 2006 JIm Leyland on the team and tearing everybody a new one?

They've had plenty of embarrassing results this year, but getting your ass kicked and needing to use three position players takes the cake.

Whatever it's about, it's probably about time

If they do fire Al (I know, they probably wont), they need to figure out a way to do it while keeping some of the people they brought in during the offseason from other organizations (notably the Dodgers). Perhaps even look to the Dodgers for his replacement to bring continuity.

But I don't trust that will happen, so why bother speculating lol

if you want new leadership but want to preserve some of the organizational reforms Al has done you bump him to team President and put a player acquisition specialist into the GM role while Al worries about resources, marketing and finances.

I think we got played by Tampa Bay on the Meadows deal. Hope I am wrong but he looks like a DH who lost his power.

Quick back-of-the-napkin comparison:

It's not quite a yawning gap, but yeah, I'd say that Tampa is winning this one so far this year.

I can only think of two realistic names inside the organization to replace Avilia. Sam Menzin is the only front office choice, he's being groomed to take over the position anyway. I think he's in his mid 30s and has been around the organization while. The other Asst VP is a computer guy, Jay Sartori. No real baseball background.

Do you kick Hintch upstairs?

Then who would Hinch hire??

Yeah I was thinking something along those lines as well. Ultimately since the buck stops at Al he of course needs to shoulder the blame but to me they need to clean house top to bottom with the exception of Hinch, Fetter and Garko who I will give a pass since he hasn't been here that long.

If they just fire Al and keep on all the same scouts, minor league instructors, and whomever else has any role in player development or player scouting then the team won't get any better. Those guys are the root of the problems, I doubt Al just looks at a board and without any input randomly decides on who to draft or go after, they are the ones telling him who to chase, acquire and draft and so far they have been wrong.

I just think, whatever they do, they have to be careful with some of the hires they made last offseason. Avila has been awful and deserves to lose his job, but that doesn't mean that Garko, Rivas, etc. need to be cleaned out. And, given that those folks have been on the job for six months or so and implementing their program, the last thing you want to do is clear them out and start from scratch.

The old hands? They need to go, agreed.

how many of the guys in those roles today are the ones from even 3 yrs ago. To me the biggest critique of Avila isn't that he doesn't have a sense of where the org needs to go, but that he has been way too slow getting the org there. Is that all him, or is that as fast a the owner wants to move yr by yr? Who knows?

Hinch moving upstairs and Lombard managing makes a lot of sense. And even giving Avila some sort of big new job title without much statutory power.

But I have no faith in Pizza Jr having the stones for that kinda move

Agreed. Avila needs to be gone yesterday, but I’m hoping they can keep Fetter, Garko and a few others.

it wouldn't be out of character in the context of the Ilitch org historically. but that was Mike and Mike is gone.

They've already started the process of remaking scouting and development, which has accelerated over the past year. Garko came out of the Dodgers system, and several other people have been hired as well out of LA.

I think that whole thing is going in the right direction, but since it's really only happened over the past year, none of those changes would be impacting the on-the-field product right now.
