Yeah - overall it sucks. But in the end you can't fight mother nature forever. We got at least a chunk of society to take enough precautions that the hospital system didn't fully collapse before we got vaccines, paxlovid, and monoclonals. That level of success is more than the species has ever managed before in the face of a new disease. What could be done has mostly been done (excpet for maybe China!). The Universe has just gotten a little less hospitable for our species.1 point

the memes and tik toks around the world cup are always tremendous. watch out dutch, here we come! get ready to stomp on some tulips! time to rename holland, michigan! but seriously, the dutch arent that great. its hard to tell with this us team. its midfield is playing tremendously well right now, but the only team with a world class midfield they have played is england, and england werent exactly going all out when they played the us. the dutch must win. now, this is a louis van gaal dutch team. expect slow ball control and a real attempt to mitigate even the slightest of defensive mistakes. target daley blind, he's slow af. hope memphis is still hobbling. hope the us can stay with gakpo cause he's the real deal and about to be sold for $100 million. ecuador overran the dutch in midfield and controlled the game, its not out of the realm of possibility that the us could do the same. however, the dutch defense and forwards are much better than the americans. especially in central defense.1 point

No one is ignoring Ukrainian losses... But you keep framing this as WE are going to determine when to end this war... It is not US. Ukraine itself is willing to incur additional pain, freezing winters, loss of life... in order to get back Crimea and all the rest of their territory. You want an end to this war? Then either: Get Russia to back out of all Ukrainian territories... OR get Ukraine to agree it's time to come to some kind of settlement with Russia; which, BTW, Ukraine believes that Russia/ Putin will NOT compromise and therefore it is useless, at this point, to negotiate. At some point, one side or the other is going to have to give in... but neither side is there yet... And neither you nor anyone else in this world is going to compel either side to do what YOU want.1 point

Chicago and Los Angeles both have 3 wins. Chicago has one more loss since they haven't had their bye week. As it stands, if LA and Chicago end up tied in the standings, LA would have the higher pick. The Bears don't actually need to win for the Rams to get to #2. Tie breakers for the draft is based on strength of schedule. The bears do have a tough remaining schedule, so their strength of schedule is only going to go up which also means they are more likely to lose out.1 point

I agree that Holy Grail is better for kids—at least for middle and high schoolers—although Life of Brian is the best Python movie by a mile. It teaches you more about life in Judea around 0 BCE than any gospel can. I remember a lot of years ago being in a group at a house party at Ferris State College talking about movies we loved. Life of Brian had been out maybe a couple years and I mentioned it and one of the other guys said oh yeah, he loved that movie. I started quoting lines from it like “wolf nipple chips, get ‘em while they’re hot, they’re lovely”, and he looked at me like I was nuts. He said I don’t know what you’re talking abut, but Life of Brian is the only movie that ever made me cry. Turned out he was thinking of Brian’s Song.1 point

Yes, this. Attempts of facts and logic actually has the opposite effect, because doing so bestows legitimacy on trolls and recasts them as honest actors.1 point

i still like bryce young over any of the qbs. he makes plays with his arm, head and legs. stroud looks like goff to me, cant handle pressure and wont move. not sure if that works as well as a qb who can move in today's nfl. but stroud has a great arm and great touch. someone will take him (hopefully the texans at 1). the athletic trade scenarios: 6, 44, 62, and a 2024 second to the texans for the #1 pick (bryce young) 6, 74 for the #3 pick (cj stroud) thoughts? i dont think that's enough to move up from 6 to 3. the bears gave up #3, #67, #111 and a future 3rd to move up from 3 to 2. i dont think the lions get to #3 without throwing in some future draft capital too. the niners gave up #12, two future firsts and a future third to go up to 3. just a third to go up to #3 seems light.1 point

I'm not a fan of reverse retro jerseys, period. If I go to one game a year, soak in the whole experience, take a bunch of pics, I want to see the Winged Wheel and the Olde English D, not a red and black jersey with Detroit on it or Detroit Stars replicas.1 point

Nice weekend! I was so close last night to a +5000 parlay. Kenneth Gainwell/Christian Watson/Devonta Smith anytime TD. All the Eagles playmakers got a tuddy except Smith. So much for turning $5 into $250. Lost an 8 team +1609 parlay on that OT game in Seattle. Mainly moneyline favorites but still hard to hit an 8 teamer.1 point

I’m not complaining that it gets dark so early per se… but after working at home then getting dinner going immediately and cleaned up so early on Mondays due to a commitment why wife has…. I often like to take a quick Power Nap to chill. Just lay back and close my eyes for 10 minutes. But with it being dark out it feels weird. So I turn the light on in our hallway so it’s half lit in the room.1 point

I think this is exactly right. It's not that Day is a "bad" coach. You don't go 42-5 across four seasons in the B1G as a bad football coach. But he inherited a well-oiled machine that could coach itself if it really needed to. For more than a decade, it was Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and the field. From 2009 to 2018, those three schools won 8 of 10 championships. If you were a 5* athlete who wanted to win an FBS national championship, those were your three options to go do it, unless you planned on catching lightning in a bottle. It's why I'm on the record (though maybe on the old forum) as saying I didn't think Michigan stood a chance against Ohio State until the playoff expanded. It was like we were in the Minor Leagues and they were in the Majors. It didn't have to be Day as the figurehead for Ohio State. You could put anyone in that role, and they walk into CJ Stroud's living room and say "look what we do!", you've got a really good chance at securing them. When Urban left in 2018, that was the machine and system that Day walked into. And he's done a great job of changing absolutely nothing. They continue to recruit exactly how they did before and they continue to walk all over 12 of their opponents in the B1G. It's Michigan - Jim Harbaugh specifically - that has adapted and said "that's who we need to beat and this is how we are going to do it". Now the ball is in Day's court to show whether he can adapt too in this chess match, or whether being stuck on 3rd base will define his OSU legacy.1 point

Gotta tear it down and rebuild. Then, in 4 or 5 years, the next GM can do it again. Rinse and repeat.1 point

We got ding dong ditched last night. It was 9pm on a Saturday night and our indoor lights were on. Couldn't make out who it was on the ring camera. Good harmless fun. Gave me a chuckle.1 point

A few days ago, I was working on an Excel spreadsheet and I noticed two cells had orange vertical marks in the cells. They looked like something was being flagged. I tried emptying the contents of the cells, but the marks didn't go away. Later, I was trying to print some medical test results, and noticed that the same marks were in the priint preview screen, but when I printed the test, the orange marks didn't print. I started experimenting and noticed the marks appeared on some programs, but not all. I Googled the problem, and didn't get any satisfactory suggestions. I rebooted, but that didn't help. I wondered when the marks first showed up, so I went upstairs and asked my wife if she had noticed them. She looked at the screen, thought for a minute, licked her finger, and rubbed out the marks. Color me embarrassed.1 point

It's partly Lalonde's system. He has them playing mostly dump and chase, which means that 5 on 5 a foward has to normally be the first player to touch the puck in the offensive zone. Hronek seems to be the only Dman with license to rotate deep in the offensive zone, the rest are mostly all staying back. Dman goals have been there but mostly on special teams and trailing D-men hopping on lose pucks in the slot. On the PP they are also playing differently - the Dmen are taking fewer long shots looking for deflections - now you have more forwards other than Larkin with the skill to manage the PP from the lower corner with less emphasis on the point (Kubalik, Perron). And maybe the other more subtle thing is that Larkin doesn't look for Sieder as being the only other competent guy on the ice with him as much as he did last season because he has Kubalik. Larkin is still by far the #1 facilitator on this team and whoever he is looking to feed is going to get points.1 point
