  1. This might be the first time I've ever seen you pump the breaks on a Tigers prospect. I'm not sure how to react. I look forward to his first appearance of the year when he strikes out four in two scoreless innings (in spring training, no less), and you change your tune. 😁

  2. im really impressed by campbell. every time he makes a change to the staff the team gets better. he's gotten more conservative with his 4th downs as the defense has improved and he doesnt see the necessity of scoring 7 each time or else they'll lose. he's adapting and learning. he's a smart guy. easily the best head coach ive seen here in a long time. maybe ever.

  3. I was a very junior advertising grunt at one of the bigger ad agencies in Detroit. My client was a sponsor of the Tigers radio broadcast and I had Rick Rizzs call me asking if he could do commercial work, in exchange for a car. I was excited and starstruck until he basically started stalking me after that. Seemed like a nice dude, though, and he eventually respectfully honored the restraining order I filed against him.

  5. Well, time to clean up the party and skate before cars start getting towed out of the church lot. Careful of the PBR cans, there’s some sorority beers on the coffee table. Did Lee find the plunger he was looking for?

  7. The Tigers fan base and the reach of the team on radio goes far beyond Detroit. There's a whole state out there that largely supports them. And not all of them are Wolverine types.

  10. I like the Malloy acquisition. One of my hopes going into the off-season was that they would start putting more emphasis on OBP skills, something they have been lacking for years. Dumping Reyes and the Castros was a good start. The next step is the acquisition part. Malloy is likely not ready yet, but I love his profile. I am not too sorry to see Jimenez leave. He still has promise, but has never shown any consistency for any length of time. I'll take the chances on Malloy's greater upside.

  11. The return is Justyn-Henry Malloy and Jake Higginbotham... the former being the centerpiece of the deal. Pretty good value for Joe on the surface... Malloy looks promising.

  12. He is an American being held without cause. As for digging at his service record that has nothing to do with his current situation. Folks think student loans are sleazy try being on base and there are check into cash spots everywhere. A lot of guys would be upside down over a month in advances because of the crazy interest rates. It’s a real problem. Not condoning what he did I just don’t know the extent of what he was convicted of.

  13. But at the end of the day, whatever his past transgressions may be, they do not matter, just as Griner's do not matter. All that matters is that both of them are Americans who were wrongfully imprisoned in Russia. And we should celebrate the successes we have (today Griner) while redoubling efforts to gain release to those still imprisoned (Whelan and likely others). My answer is the same as it was when some people complained that Griner wasn't released when Trevor Reed was released a few months ago (and yes there were a lot of complaints): we don't have to play this game. The Benny Johnson types (and those who complained about Reed being released over Griner) want us fighting and dividing over this shit, and it is not worth it. Especially because we all want the same thing in the end (or at least I hope we do). It's just really counterproductive and discouraging to see Americans being brought home turn into a partisan cudgel. It wasn't right when it was Trevor Reed, it wasn't right when it was Otto Warmbier during the last administration, and it isn't right now.

  14. I think this is the kind of thing that almost nobody knows anything about. It's like baseball fans complaining that their GM didn't try to get their favorite trade target. How do you know they didn't try? It's just another excuse for MAGAs to hate Joe Biden, to whine about Blacks and gays getting special treatment and to pretend that they are the only ones who care about military personnel. It covers all their favorite topics.

  17. I do have a strong memory of it, having been an advertising media executive with friends at WJR at the time. I also lived through Bo's entire tenure as coach of Michigan. I was even a Michigan fan myself as a child because every kid growing up in Detroit in the 70s was a Michigan fan, and a Bo Schembechler fan. I'm just sharing my recollection of contemporaneous conversation about the events at that time, and the conclusion JR people came to is that Ernie won because Ernie was universally beloved, and Bo—to your point about divided loyalties, but probably more because of his general demeanor—was not. Also, FWIW—I understand it's a huge apostasy to even broach this here—the JR people I knew at that time were not fans of Ernie in general. They thought he reneged on his promise to retire after his last contract, forced the station to give him one more year, and resented the soft power he wielded in that one press conference to curry public sympathy and make the station and the team look like the bad guys. They were personally glad to see him go. Believe it or not.

  18. Bo was not the god from Michigan when he ran the Tigers. Don't forget his association with Monoghan in general tarred his image. Remember SAVE TIGER STADIUM and the Tiger Stadium Fan Club? I assure you his time as Michigan's coach played no role in his perception to Tiger fans. In many ways it's a different fan base. My family were huge Tiger fans but couldn't give two shits about Michigan. Not anti michigan either. Just indifferent. He was just another football coach to us. The Ernie stuff was just icing on the cake. But to Bo's credit, it was WJR's management that pushed Ernie out and Bo fought for one more year. When the heat came Bo said it was his job to take it as the boss even if some of it was misaligned. Granted this is Bo's side of things through Mitch Albom but Joe Falls also checked it out. In his book Falls recounts that he was home sick when the news broke so he wasn't on the scene immediately. But he didn't think things looked right. Here's a guy who signed a one year contract, with a huge raise, then has a press conference, in their building, announcing he's being fired. He started digging and had arranged a meeting with Bo, then he gets there and he sees Mitch walking away from the house. That was another story but the fact he kind of cooborates what Mitch wrote makes me think it's the truth. Whether Beckman was pulling strings... who knows. But Ernie did say when he came back in 1993 or whenever it was, that Rick and Bob were cold toward him. He offered lunch dates and mentoring but that bob in particular wasn't interested. He got relegated to pre/post game shows. Rick is a great broadcaster with Seattle so I guess it works out. Just a shitty decision and unforced error. But I do think that fuss elevated Ernie above a level he might not have attained. All of his catch phrases and such were not quite as prominent pre-firing as you would think. Then they became a trademark. Think of George Blaha.... people like him but is he beloved? No. Now imagine the Pistons were going to fire him in 2006? Then they bring him back and viola, he's beloved. Blaha rules. Every bit the legend. We're blessed in this town.

  19. Yes, although not just the baseball cognoscenti. Regular people who weren't even baseball fans, even Michigan fans, lost their respect for Bo. Which is the say, they finally saw him revealed for what he basically was: Woody Hayes North.

  24. Right... And what that does to Stafford is... Just makes him "another guy" in terms of stats because in this generation of QB's there's a shitload of QB's with similar stats. And therefore... ignore the stats, it has to be "other things" that will make someone want to vote a guy into the HOF. Will Rodgers get in? He won only one Super Bowl. But... the perception of him versus Stafford is that Rodgers constantly drove his team to victory and Stafford didn't. It doesn't even matter what the stats say. And therefore, similar QB's to Stafford might be Eli, Rivers & Ryan, not Peyton, Brady & Rodgers. And Stafford, Eli Manning, Ryan & Rivers will have a hard time getting in.

  25. The elephant in the room though is that he not only spells Justin with a y but also has a hyphenated first name. Usually I'd pass on somebody like that but hopefully his game will overcome that.

  26. How are you trading Madden for five Englerts? Makes no sense, and no, Madden isnt "five times" better than Englert. I'd rather have Madden, but they're not that far apart. I'd much rather have both.

  27. Given the mess the organization is in and all the injuries to their best young pitchers, I figured this year was a lost season anyway. Unfortunately, I think 2024 is the first season where we can expect to see the MLB team molding into shape.

  30. The union story should be the leading story on every news channel. The ultimate battle between workers and corporate greed. But of course that doesn't happen. Imagine that. But they are moving some of the suicide net factories from China to Vietnam, so we can still buy $100 microwaves, so it's all good.

  34. Man.... people are impatient. Signing players is not just a matter of throwing money at them. You can't put a gun to their head. You need to offer a reason for another team to give you good players. Rebuilding isn't just a matter of going to the store and trading 3 players worth 2 points for 1 player worth 8. You don't go into a general store with a wish list and the guy comes back with your items.

  38. I love his answer about building a team for the ballpark. A smart team should be able to take advantage of an asymmetric park. I don't get the stuff about the park not being "fair" to hitters. It's not a terrible park for hitters, It's below average home run park, but it's pretty close to neutral for run scoring. The obsession with the long ball is hurting the game.

  42. Former Tiger radio announcer Bob Rathbun had a seizure live on the air before an Atlanta Hawks game. Turned out to be dehydration (which can be scary). He's okay now. Bob got a bad deal here..........whomever followed the fired Ernie Harwell was going to be hated and that's why Frank Beckman didn't do it right away.
