  1. Who is Greg Eno and why should I care what he has to say about the Tigers?

  2. So in essence they said "Be good... you all are smart enough to do what's right for your neighbors and not be selfish" And they did. That would never work here.

  4. The accident happened in January. The combine was a month later. His weight gain happened in just two weeks between the combine and pro day. So wouldn't he have been depressed before the combine?

  6. Games inside don't count. They played in Florida, that's still spring training. Houston is still an NL team to me so this is exhibition. Tigers are 0-0 and will be 0-0 coming home Thursday.

  7. They made the ECF in 87 and 88. They finished first in the Norris in 92. I remember the sporting news picked them to win the cup in 93. Scotty got here. I remember Ilitch wanted to fire him and bring in Mike Keenan. Scotty also wanted to trade Yzerman at one point. the wings fate turned on Yzerman falling to them after the islanders took LaFontaine. Then being aggressive in the European draft when there were so many unknowns.

  9. While almost everything Elon has done recently just adds to giving capitalism a bad name, not sure what the case would be here. All advertising is attempted market manipulation -- most of it is not illegal. I don't think there is any law against hyping your own investments per se. You're only in trouble if you can be shown to be operating sub rosa at cross purpose to your public positions - e.g. pump and dump etc.

  10. Am I reading that right? 8 lbs lighter and the score drops from 7.87 to 4.77? They are the same height. models with extreme variation under marginal input differences is suspect. Difference between 257 and 249 is a weekend of beer and pizza.

  13. His Pro Day debacle certainly fuels that fire though and validates some of the smoke about work ethic conerns. Nobody knows WHY he showed up at his pro day out of shape but it's certainly something we know for a fact that should raise a red flag.

  16. I agree with this. This is why if we are going to speculate about him — which everybody on this board and all across social media is — we should attribute normal human emotions to him, rather than assuming he is a monster or an animal. Not saying you are doing this, but it would be disingenuous to speculate that the guy is a monster or animal, incapable of normal human emotions, then to tell people to stop speculating that the guy may be dealing with normal human emotions. Finally, I’m not saying the team should or shouldn’t draft him. I just don’t like dog piling.

  17. I don't believe this is true at all. Assuming there's no personal fallout between him and Harris, Hinch's honeymoon won't be over until he is given the players that he is expected to contend with and then fails to do so. Until that happens, Hinch won't get fired even if the team ends up losing 105 games this year. What would be the point of firing him over that? It's not as though they could give this exact same team to, for example, Jim Leyland and expect him to win with them in a way Hinch can't.

  18. It is a shame that Ilitch hired Hinch and made him work with Avila for 1.5 seasons. The damage that Avila continued to do buried us deeper in this abyss. I think Hinch and Harris are more or less tied at the hip. Hinch will leave on his own volition if he thinks this is another 5-6 year project. But right now, I think they both agree on the trajectory of the org.

  19. you got wonder how much Hinchs multiple lineups and platooning might effect players getting consistent AB and getting into a groove especially with younger guys

  20. NASA announced the Armetis II crew today. Going back to the moon for the first time in over 50 years (Dec '72 was Apollo 17). I'm not embarassed to say I had goose bumps and a little teary eyed watching the announcement. This is so freakin' cool.

  22. Set a reminder to go back in June and remember which Rays pitchers shut the Tigers down. McClanahan, we know is a dude. Springs' 2022 was overlooked and all reports from the spring suggest he could be elite this year. And Eflin is way too unheralded for his track record, and joined a team that can unlock something further. Good chance we look back at that series and see the team ran into a buzz saw. I could be wrong, but I won't push the panic button until May or so.

  23. I know, it's irritating to have links posted to paywalled stuff, but there an excellent NYT article offering a retrospective of how Sweden's low mandate Covid policies actually turned out in the end. There is a lot of good stuff in there if you can get access, but I'll excerpt a few conclusions and summarize by noting a couple of things: 1-it turns out there is no such thing as 'herd immunity' for Covid - it's just not that kind of virus so all the conversation around that question early in the pandemic was futile. Wrong infection model. Covid has never and will never recede because of infection resistance in the population -rather it has become and will remain endemic. The corollary to that is that Covid vaccination does not stop populaton transmission - what it does do is protect the vaccinated from severe illness. To try and give an explanation of this: Covid is a virus that can replicate and spread via the nasal mucosa - so you can have good systemic immunity from it via vaccination - while you can still be 'infected' and spread it because you can carry it 'superficially'. (What has now been achieved in unvaccinated population is simply past exposure immunity, but that came at the cost of the unvaxxed populations suffering higher mortality rates.) 2-For Covid what turned out to be important was raising serious disease resistance in the popuation via vaccination. That is why Sweden's experience did not turn out to be much worse than average despite the lack of mitigation mandates - they didn't push mitigation that hard but they did get very good vaccination compliance. (And they got a lot of voluntary compliance with other 'guidlines' as well as they are a socially cohesive population.) final word from the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/30/opinion/sweden-pandemic-coronavirus.html?action=click&algo=bandit-all-surfaces-variants-shadow-lda-unique-diversify-time-cutoff-30&alpha=0.05&block=trending_recirc&fellback=false&imp_id=710496947&impression_id=cca9189e-d21a-11ed-a71a-b71ef5b5bdcc&index=6&pgtype=Article&pool=pool%2F5bffce26-a993-4ed4-af7d-8894fdf413ca&region=footer&req_id=251251044&shadow_vec_sim=0.35518996439878153&surface=eos-most-popular-story&variant=0_pers_bandit_diversified

  24. We always used our neighborhood pharmacy, who is our neighbor, and the service was top notch. I'd much rather support him. We have good coverage and our meds were fairly cheap out of pocket so I'm not worried about paying $3.87 over $5.15, especially since I have to drive about a mile further. I can call Allie anytime and he'll chase things up. He'll sometimes bring them home to us. The only benefit Walgreens had was the app and auto system, which again, works fine when there's no complications. I can bring it up and punch a few things, refill submitted, no phone calls, etc. We needed a steroid once and our local guy was able to get us some coupons to use, he did it all himself. Walgreens we are just a piece names and numbers on a screen that they process as they come in.

  25. I posted this on another thread- any more thoughts (Thanks casimir): Should the Tigers look at Estevan Florial, DFA, from the NYY? https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flories01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-04-01_br They just brought in LHB McKinstry, Paulson and Witherspoon. None have the pedigree of Florial. That is 'not' to say Florial is the better player or they 'should' do this - but he is young (same exact age as RKreidler), has athleticism and tools (speed, power and arm, decent glove as well) and has had success at AAA. He is out of options, but is not Arb eligible until '26. Would this be a 'calculated risk' worth taking? or do we have simply better options. He does have some swing and miss tendency but does also have the ability to draw some walks. The NYY are always in a 'Have to win now' mode and maybe initially brought up Florial too early, hence the scenario. IMHO, this type of player could possibly do well in Comerica Park (reminds me of Granderson early on). I also think Vidal Brujan, back in the minors with Tampa, might be a good fit for the Tigers/park as well (we'll see on McKinstry though... ).

  28. I believe you missed the part where I said I liked Mitch Haniger. But even as much as I like him and actually wish they could have signed him, I don't think he would have affected a different outcome in this series. Baseball is a team sport, there are 26 roster spots; you aren't going to win many games if only 5 of the 26 play well. Plugging and playing Mitch Hangier into one of those spots, assuming he's even healthy, doesn't really change that basic math problem. Either way, as far as pooh poohing is concerned, aside from the fact that I'm pretty sure I'm the one with the minority view here, I just think that complaining about free agency activity is the easy way out here. It's harder, and scarier, to admit that this thing rises or falls on the talent that they still had in the org in 2022 and retain today. Said it in the offseason, will say it again now. It just is what it is.

  29. I liked Hanger a lot, though he's going through an oblique issue at the moment and isn't playing. Which in and of itself shows how free agency is a crapshoot. The discussion about strategy on free agents is a fair one to have, but in terms of assessing and reacting to what happened in St. Petersburg this weekend, its not particularly relevant given just how bad most of the team, basically everyone outside of Joey Wentz, Eduardo, and a couple others played. Nobody wants to hear it, but it's the reality. Put another way, there's a baseline that the rest of the club would need to play at for free agents to factor into wins and losses, and they failed to even meet that at The Trop.

  31. They could not have gotten better players because Al Avila was behind the wheel. So we should be glad he wasn’t the guy to trade Soto. I grant what you say about Vierling and Maton. I was responding to the assertion that they are subreplacement hitters. So far, they are not.

  32. Sure, pay a guy tens of millions of dollars more than he is worth and you can get him to play for anybody. But if you’re a team like the Tigers and you’re the top bidder by only a few million, you’re probably not getting the guy, because he is going to want to go someplace where he can win. I know that idea gets pooh-poohed around here a lot, but it’s true. By the way, how does it feel the root for a team that can’t get anybody decent come play for them unless they dramatically overpay them? Maybe for you … but I don’t like it.

  33. Charles Rogers had a drug problem. Titus Young had psychiatric problems. As far as we know Jalen Carter drives too fast and may be depressed over his connection with a fatal car crash — in which he was not the driver and he did not collide with the other vehicle. Not every red flag is the same.

  34. I haven’t been around here in quite a while because I don’t have much positive to say and I don’t want to be like the trolls I used to enjoy banning. But the negative comment I do have to share is that I was wondering how the Ilitch family cannot feel ashamed at what they’ve done to this team and I realize that as really really really rich kids they probably have a pretty thick skin about being disliked. I suppose that Mike as complicated and unsaint like as he most likely was, was at least capable of shame which made him care two shits instead of none.
