  5. I also make use of my library, and have used it in conjunction with my Libby app, to download books. But, I bought Caste because every now and then I like the physical feel of a book, even when I drop it on my face reading in bed. 😂

  6. Both books are excellent. My read along these lines right now is Freedom's Dominion: A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power, which came out late last year. It's the history of exactly what it says it is, starting with the "Indian Removal" process of the 1820s and 30s, through the War Between the States, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, post-Civil Rights, on up to Trumpism today, through the perspective of a single county, Barbour County, Alabama, home of the city of Eufaula. Fascinating and insightful. I am fortunate to have the great Chicago Public Library system that makes just about any book I want to read available to me for the price of the tax dollars I'm already paying them anyway.

  8. It says more about the Tigers than about Baez, but I think WAR captured his performance well enough. What part of WAR do you think didn't work for him?

  9. It is definitely culturally ingrained, in everybody. Every time I go anywhere down south, I am struck by just how cordial black people are to me, how they almost seem to go out of their way to engage me, smile, say hi. That's something you rarely, if ever, see up here in the big city. Based on my fairly extensive readings of 20th-century American cultural and social history, my hypothesis is that they want to proactively communicate to me that they are not a threat to me and then hopefully I won't use the power of the state to go rogue all over them.

  11. So yesterday afternoon I saw a tweet referring to a Tigers play... "Oh, they're on? Makes sense, getaway day". I put on Bally's. I'm working so just 1/3 watching, no sound. "Man, this game is moving fast, 7th inning already?. Aw man, they've got the bases loaded in the 9th.... no way they are winning. Losing 2 extra inning games on the road.... isn't terrible I guess" Yeah I thought the replay was the real game. So them winning is extra meaningful for me.

  14. Funny, I still hold a grudge about 2009 and to this day like to see the Penguins fail. Whereas the Avs feel like a totally different franchise from before, I hardly connect them to the 1996-2002 heated rivalry days. I felt nothing when they won the Cup last year.

  16. True story: the first time I went to a Houston Astros game was in the summer of 2012. Sunday afternoon. They were horrific... paid attendance was a little over 7,000. Today? They are far and away the most popular thing in town. Winning cures a lot of ills...

  17. OKC has a phenomenal development program, one of the best in the league, but I was referencing their "war chest" of picks. They've been able to accumulate them because they've had star/superstar assets to use to acquire them. Same with Houston, Utah, San Antonio and Orlando to a lesser extent. Weaver's best assets were broken Blake and Rose.

  18. There's a better chance of Avila getting rehired to run an MLB team than there is an MLB team trading for Baez.

  19. I'll repeat my Baez take...he can't be the focal point of your team. He was perfect on the Cubs where he could operate behind a lot of other guys. The Tigers miscalculated that they were close to 'contention' and signed him as an alpha star. But he can still be a decent player with all of the flightiness and free swinging. This is why you sign the top free agent, not the 4th best. For some reason, Ilitch and Avila wanted to sign a guy before the lockout. This is the result.

  21. I almost always get physical books, mainly because I don't like staring at a backlit screen for long stretches of time. Especially true on those nights I wake up in the middle of the night, can't fall right back to sleep, and then want to read something to lead me back to dreamland. Although, by sheer coincidence, I did get a library book today through Libby, first time in maybe over a year, because an e-version was available but the actual book has a lot of holds on it. The book is: Adrift America in 100 Charts

  24. The books The Warmth of Other Suns, and Caste (both by Isabel Wilkerson) also do an excellent job of describing this. I wish I could say my city was better... unfortunately I cannot.

  25. I wanted Buddha to explain it since he is an expert on why it doesn't work! Honestly, it is pretty complicated and gets overused. A player gets points for: hitting performance (let's say OPS) playing time (Think about games played so a players doesn't get too many points for a high OPS in few games played) fielding (runs saved based on one of the advanced fielding measures like UZR at Fangraphs) position (extra points for playing a difficult position like shortstop) baserunning(SB, CS, taking extra bases, etc) Add it all together and you arrive at the numbers of wins a player is worth compared to a AAAA player playing in his place. A scrub is 0-1 WAR Average player 2 WAR Good player 3-4 WAR allstar 4-5 WAR MVP 6+

  26. The checks and balances against espionage are never perfect. I always consider that one of the people I'm briefing at any given time might be a self-indulgent narcissist who wants to trade on the information i'm providing to get himself a bag of cocaine or a blowjob or a nice new house. The negative incentives for espionage are imperfect.

  27. Both sides have incentive for this to work out as best it can this year... the team for his potential production, Javy for his potential market value should he elect to opt out. So no, there will not be a trade nor should there be. Both sides need to work to make this successful going forward

  35. It has been 40 years ago, at least. But does anyone remember the details when Sparky pulled Gibson mid inning because he made a mental mistake in the outfield? Seems to me that finally woke Gibby up and he stopped being a total ass (at least on the field) after that. Hopefully Javey gets the message.

  36. My biggest qualms isn't so much what Harris did or didn't do it just goes back to how crappy our system is. I mean we should have atleast a couple arms somewhere in the system that can be major league caliber relievers with major league caliber stuff. You shouldn't have to rely on guys like Jose Cisnero and Trey Wingenter.

  37. Feldman brings up some good points about the usual loaded SEC juggernauts and OSU having to replace some key players but those teams always reload, they're chalked full of 5 star recruits just ready to step in and play so the team doesn't miss a beat. They probably would've gotten steamrolled by UGA anyway but last year was probably their best chance to win a CFP game, not that TCU was a bad team but by CFP standards you are unlikely to get an easier matchup. It's too bad UM came out of the gates slow and JJ's mistakes were of the catastrophic variety.

  38. feldman loves michigan. they give him a lot of access. that said, this michigan team has few obvious question marks (depth at corner and potentially offensive tackle) and has harbaugh's usual pansy ooc schedule. they have 3 games on the schedule that should be tough: at penn state, at michigan state, and ohio state at home. it would be a big disappointment to lose more than one game if jj stays healthy. the expectation should be 12-0.

  39. Wouldn't shock me if they lost to GSW in the first round. They play no defense.

  40. I’d rather talk about the Blue Jay instead this coming L. While it is a strikingly beautiful bird, most people don’t realize they are actually one of the nastiest, unfriendly species in the bird family. They don’t play well with others and are aggressive to the point of attacking other birds even going so far as to bite their heads off. Despite their regal appearance, Blue Jays really are the giant assholes of the bird family. This meaningless bit of information will probably be more memorable than anything you see during tonight’s game.

  43. Okudah seems like the type of player Holmes would have picked up a year or two ago. I think it's work the gamble for the Falcons. Okudah had a lot of things happen that were out of his control.

  44. My family is from rural TN. It’s a college town so not total wacky but you see the conflicts between elements of the university being there and the old yimers. For instance a brewery was threatened with revocation of a license due to drag queen sympathy. The racism is just so ingrained and second nature to them that it seems normal. I saw a video of a legislator during the proceedings last week sayinf things in the most condescending and insulting way and it seemed so natural to him. He wasn’t trying to be that way. That’s just how he talked. You could tell. He’s a guy who doesn’t look over his shoulder before using the N word. He did everything up to calling him “boy”. In 2023 a guy in a suit and tie in a legislative body talking that way to a black peer. They see it as their Christian duty to keep these people in line.
