Reminder... 5pm today, you have to activate players from the 60-Day IL. With the addition of Canha, that would put the Tigers at 43. Also, minor league free agents become free agents at that time, so if there are any you plan on protecting from the Rule 5, today is the day to do that (Keider Montero?). Finally, new as of a couple years ago and more restrictive this year, the offseason domestic reserve list (basically, stateside minor leaguers not on the 40 man) drops from 180 to 175 tonight. I have the Tigers at 159 now with 15 who need to come off the minor league 60-day IL, but 27 stateside free agents. So ending the day at 147 plus any outrights who join the mix. All this is to say, expect some moves today: Will Montero be added? Who will be among the 3+ dropped from the 40-man? Will the Tigers use some of their minor league roster flexibility to acquire some prospects from teams in a crunch? Maybe we see a waiver claim or a back-of-the roster trade today.6 points

I'm okay with the penalty, not the fine. The penalty needs to be assessed on a quick basis from what it looks like on the field. You can't pause the game and go to replay just because a players complains he was tripped. But the fine is a different story. The league absolutely can watch the replays, can take into consideration the player, can view exactly what happened and then make the correct call. This ain't it.4 points

"was his job to steal signs and he was given details from multiple league schools to compile a spreadsheet of play-calling signals used by Michigan last year" Thank God no Michigan player got injured because of this. We've been told the past 2 weeks that sign stealing is a dangerous practice that jeopardizes the health and safety of football players and the health and safety of guys on the Spartans.2 points

I think they saw him as a good deal independent of what else they might be able to do this winter. Maybe they won't do much else at all, but I don't think the Canha trade is an indicator of that.2 points

I would also like to reiterate that there is a power that comes with incumbency, and that if Biden steps aside, that advantage goes away. Particularly if there ends up being a competitive primary. Just think people are overlooking that when they fantasize about alternatives.2 points

Lamar has been embarrassing NFC teams his whole career. Only Mahomes is as skilled, and this season Baltimore is managing Lamar’s workload to keep him healthy for the playoffs. Against Indy they fumbled four times and lost two then lost in OT. Pittsburgh is a division game with a tough defense that plays and game plans against him frequently. Baltimore is on a roll now. They’ve humiliated good teams two weeks in a row. If someone forced me to put money on a team today to win the Super Bowl in February it would be Baltimore.2 points

It's a 2,000 year old antisemitic insult. Seriously, you guys didn't know this? I don't want to try to explain it, it just takes too long with too many examples/ variations/ etc... But they've been known as "moneylenders" (Jesus hates them...), greedy, bankers that Kings were forced to borrow from and then kicked them out of the country so the kings could dismiss all their loans, accused of "controlling the world" through their purse strings.. etc. This is NOT an innocent statement or insult. It's a pointed antisemitic (anti-Jewish more specifically) trope that has beget expulsions/ pogroms/ hatred/ murder/ etc. I'll let the Guardian explain in more detail: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/09/jews-money-antisemitism-judas-shylock-capitalism Here's King Edward's expulsion of Jews from England in 1290 (not primarily over money but took advantage of...): https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/jews-in-england-1290/#:~:text=In 1287%2C in the duchy, community faced the same fate. Following the Statute of Jewry c. 1275, the situation for England’s Jewish community declined further still. In 1287, in the duchy of Gascony (an area of modern-day France under English rule), King Edward ordered the local Jews to be expelled. All their property was seized by the crown and all outstanding debts owed to Jews were transferred to the king’s name. Shortly later, England’s Jewish community faced the same fate. By the time King Edward returned to England in 1289, he was deeply in debt. The next summer he summoned his knights to introduce a steep tax on his people. To make the tax more bearable Edward essentially offered to expel all Jews in exchange. The heavy tax was passed, and three days later, on 18th July 1290, writs (letters) were issued to the sheriffs of every county outlining that all Jews should leave England by All Saint’s Day (1st November 1290). Jews were allowed to take their possessions with them, but the vast majority had their houses forfeited to the king. Jews were forced into moneylending because they were not allowed to do anything else; and Christians were forbidden from usury (charging interest on moneylending): https://daily.jstor.org/licoricia-jewish-medieval-women-moneylenders/ Constant confiscation of Jewish wealth, and dismissal of Jewish loans, in the Middle Ages: https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/banking-and-bankers2 points

Meadows can refuse assignment (5+ years service time), so he may have just said "No, I'm not accepting an outright," even if the end state is free agency. Maybe they aren't letting him go, for reasons.1 point

Media: Trump declines Zelensky's invite to Ukraine over 'conflict of interests' https://www.yahoo.com/news/media-trump-declines-zelenskys-invite-220021806.html Of course he's blowing off Ukraine because of a conflict of interest... LICKING VLADIMIR PUTIN'S BOOTS on a DAILY BASIS in the hopes of obtaining a TRUMP TOWER MOSCOW and a TRUMP TOWER ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA... is definitely a conflict of interest. Refuse assignment? No. Declare free agency? Yes. He will be gone. They likely didn't put him on waivers in time because Canha wasn't acquired til Saturday. What isn't mentioned in that transaction is Wingenter and Vasquez will be among the minor league free agent crop at the top of the hour.1 point

In no way was my response meant to show any support for the GOP and the budget. That said, isn't it the congress that 'holds the purse strings'? Who controlled congress under Clinton? 😉 My only point is while most of us say a combination of tax hikes and controlled spending is needed to balance the budget, the left never promotes anything but tax hikes while the right traditionally only points to spending to control it. It also has only happened for a few times, all in a short set of continuous years in my 47 years on this earth, under both democrats and republicans in the WH and congress.1 point

I mean... Canha was one of the best 10 or so position players projected on the free agent market. It's thin out there. And while I have urged caution on looking at Toledo's numbers, the lineup there was formidable down the stretch. It is not unreasonable to expect reinforcements internally.1 point

I think a lot of voters pretend to care about the debt, but don't want to be the one who has to give up stuff up to get it under control.1 point
-
if someone really cared about spending or the national debt (2 separate but related issues), you only have to look at Clinton-Obama-Biden vs. Bush-Trump, to see what party consistently does better on these issues but there is no large group of voters who really care about these issues, which every Washington pol knows, which is why we have the government we have1 point

Of course, he's not popular personally, but there are still are a lot of people that think he's good for the country. I would wager that the majority of white males think he's not THAT bad of a person, not bad enough where they will dismiss him politically. Sure, he's an idiot and a douche, but he's a businessman and he's good for the economy!!! He's tough and he gets things done!!! I know a bunch of people like that. Enough Americans like Trump where he won't "sink" like Echoes claims. We've been waiting for that to happen for 8 years and it it's not happening.1 point

what's bonkers is that Biden has had so many wins, and bi-partisan wins. People claim that is what they want - someone who can reach across the aisle and get things done. at worst, he is an average president, and considering a vile, life-long grifter is the other choice, incomprehensible to me that Biden is not lapping the field. I don't know how to have Biden get more credit for what he's done. I remain hopeful that when it comes down to this: an uninspired choice vs. the worst possible choice - Biden will win that binary decision easily; but frankly, its 50/50 right now, and that says a lot about the future of the country, and it is not looking good1 point

Saw flower moon tonight. Easily best work by Scorsese and DeNiro in a very long time, yes I am including departed and Irishman in that analysis. And Robbie Robertson’s music was fantastic. Don’t know what kind of Oscar category he would be eligible for but it would be a great posthumous honor. Music is tricky because if they incorporated anything from prior work it’s often ineligible. This and Oppenheimer will be like No Country and There will be blood in 2007. I read about 60% of the book prior. Tried to finish it but last night I got to a point where I wanted the movie to finish it off. I didn’t know how it ended.1 point

We obviously don't know what the development of Ausar will look like but for this year at least, him and Stewart is not a good forward situation for us. We really need Bogey back and starting next to Ausar. Ausar can guard the other teams best forward and Bogey will help make up for what Ausar lacks in his game right now. I know Cade does most of the ball handling but Sasser does not have a turnover his last three games, which encompasses 76 minutes of basketball. That feels impressive to me for a guard.1 point

Agree that paying Baddoo $1.7M to be insurance at AAA is an easy decision.1 point
-
Realistic? They're creating ridiculous narratives in an attempt to completely exonerate Michigan.1 point
-
He's on track to make 1.7M per MLBTR... So about twice the minimum. I don't mind keeping somebody like that in AAA if you need him. Also, stuff happens. Greene has a setback, Parker Meadows doesn't hit, somebody else gets hurt, and he's there. It's better than having to go get Jake Marisnick again. p.s. As for Super 2. Anybody with three years of more of service time are arbitration eligible. Effectively, everybody between 2 and 3 is ranked by service time (counted to the day) and the top 22% of them are eligible for arbitration. Arbitration just means the player can negotiate their salary. Yes, you can non-tender (not offer), but somebody like Baddoo is a worth a lot more than what he'll get in arb on the free agent market.1 point
-
yes - and the usury thing applied in the Muslim/Ottoman world as well. So there are a lot of historical anticedents to why Jews ended up in what are today considered 'professional' fields. Restrictions on property ownership, insecurity of citizenship, coupled to a generally higher level of education. The Torah demands that children be taught to read the scriptures. In the ignorance of both the Christian and Islamic midieval worlds that became a source of both success, and cultural resentment. In the Islamic Ottoman empire a good part of the civil service were always Christians and Jews.1 point

I don't see why you let Baddoo go. Maybe there's a trade partner, but he's still a 25 year old with a decent track record that you can stash in Toledo if you need. MLBTR has him around $1.7M through arbitration. Worth keeping around.1 point

After thinking about it, I'm fine with the pickup. If it keeps Short, Nevin and Ibanez out of the OF, it will be good. It's just, the Tigers have way too many outfielders already. I really think we'll be moving on from Baddoo.1 point

Oh stop it. Drafts distribute incoming amateur talent in a most rational manner, and have been doing so successfully in most sports for many years. Lotteries, in any sport, have done absolutely nothing to affect or change team behavior even one iota, and only serve to dilute the true function of a draft. Lotteries address a perception, not a reality.1 point
-
Yeah I get that.. that's why I said where we finish in the draft will depend on this year's finish "and then the lottery." I hate lotteries. Especially it seems, for the Detroit teams. But if we gain, I won't look a gift-horse in the mouth. If we lose... I'll bitch, as usual...1 point
