  1. I didn’t even bother doing MLB TV the last two seasons because I couldn’t get it to sync the radio audio with the TV audio to drown out Shep. Having Dan doing TV 35 games a year is a real plus too. This is the equivalent of the sun shining and birds chirping on a winter’s day for me. It’s like being Sally Field at the Oscars. The Tigers must really like us. EDIT: I just listened to him talk about having cerebral palsy. This is a real person. He’s not just a voice or a guy in a suit. He has substance. Good or bad as a team, it’s going to be more pleasant having the Detroit Tigers back in my life again because of Jason Benetti.

  2. Dirks was so good I thought he was a professional from another team who had an opening to fill in. He sounds like he’s been doing it for years. Just the right touch of insight that a player can bring without going overboard.

  5. Fans (or almost all fans anyway) also would do the exact same thing (ie. acting in their own interest) if they were in Eduardo's situation as well.

  6. There was another issue with Denver's court. They measured the arc of the the 3PT line wrong and that made it a few inchers off above the break. The fixed it before the game but you could see the mistaken 3PT line still kinda faded on the court.

  7. 4 on 3 is pretty a steep advantage. I didn't find a number for it, but given that the average 5 on 4 PP success rate is in the 20s and 5 on 3 is ~70, 4 on 3 is probably also in the 50% or better range.

  8. Yes, but I wouldn't assume that he refused the deal so he could miss post-season. I don't get why we are saying that he didn't want to play in post-season as if it's a fact. There might have been an immediate family situation which made it difficult to disrupt his family. I mean there was a problem last year, so whatever it was might still be going on. We'll never know.

  12. probably helps UM with a judge because it shows clear intent to frustrate due process and a judge won't like that.

  13. It strikes me that we need some new term for these regimes that may have had their seeds in Marxism but have moved almost completely away from a Marxist economic model. Putin has taken Russia all the way to plain dictatorship, so the description there is simple enough, but we could use a new word for what a place like China is: "Capunism"? Comsicm? Who is this era's William Safire when you need a new word coined?

  14. Normally Doug and Gator play Switzerland and don't call out other shows. I was laughing my ass off this morning when they had an exchange like "this will probably come out in the afternoon show", "oh, do you think they'll talk about it?" ... long pause... "Mike will probably say he doesn't want to talk about it and then talk about it for four hours"

  15. Gania and Hasty both have sidekicks (Sam Leibowitz and Nate Wangler) who could hold the fort down whenever their presence is needed for Tigers games, so I suspect there won't be too much of an issue using some combination of the two to fill in for Dan when needed.

  17. I listened to some of Clawson's interviews on a local sports station back then. It was a good mix of calm, low key, matter of fact, business like, professional. He just seemed to have this quiet strength about him.

  19. I generally let the team worry whether they want to deal with a prick. If it's OK with them, then it's OK with me. I just want talented players. There are some exceptions like wife beaters or child molestors, but Bauer doesn't fall in that category as far as I know.

  20. The Clintons are not very likable, but both are smart. Actually, Bill apparently was likable since he won two elections, but he's one of these people that I knew was a sleazebag the first time I heard him talk, much like Trump.

  21. I brought this up around the time the evidence came out about his accuser setting him up. He's a prick, but so are a lot of great athletes. I would definitely kick the tires on Bauer.

  28. I've had my internet gateway box from AT&T going on four years, and I have an Asus router on top of that. (Network SSID? Asus and Eights. Natch.) I started noticing late last week that my internet connection broke, and when I looked at the gateway, all the lights on it were blinking red. I rebooted it and it was fine, for about 15 minutes. Then it rebooted itself. Then after ten minutes it did it again. I called AT&T and talked to AI which asked me a couple questions, did a diagnostic, said everything looked fine, and remotely rebooted my gateway yet again. It worked fine again the following morning, when it started rebooting itself fairly frequently. After a third day of this, I thought, sht, man, the box is failing. I called AT&T, zeroed through to a human being, and told him my box is failing, please send me another one, and no need to send a technician with it, I can connect it myself. The guy said, well, your box is only four years old so there shouldn't be a problem, so before we send you another box, let me run some diagnostics from here. I said, OK, I'll wait. About five minutes later he comes back on the line and says, our tests show that the CAT-5 cable you're connecting the box to the wall unit with is what's failing and causing your problem. You need to go to a Best Buy or Target and pick one up, and you might as well get a CAT-6 or CAT-7 cable since that's the new standard. I said, wait, I think I have CAT cables in the basement. And I did: a CAT-6, as it turns out. Plugged it in and bingo! Everything has been great ever since. Until today, when my connection through the router (separate from the gateway) started failing. First I noticed problems on my laptop; then I could not log into the Asus app through my phone. I think, damn it, man, the router is fai ... Waaaait a-a-a MINUTE! Ran downstairs, got another CAT-6 cable from downstairs, and came up to replace the cable connecting the router to the gateway. Went to take the cable out of the back of the gateway, and saw it actually has four separate CAT outlets, with the router plugged into one. And I thought, say, what if I just plug the existing cable into a different outlet? That's what I did, and that problem is fixed too! Very weird that I would have a cabling connection issue on the gateway and then the router in back-to-back weeks, after years of no issues with them at all. And the moral of the story is: check the goddamn cables and outlets first.

  29. That's actually an incredible hire. Shep to Benetti is going to be a sharp contrast.

  30. Partially this, partially the fact that Benetti's national portfolio has grown. I think he found a good landing spot here for where he is at in his career.... he may go completely national some day, but in the meantime, it's good the Tigers are willing to accommodate him

  33. Hopefully the Tigers will add/subtract the second person in the booth so that Jason can develop a similar relationship that he has with Steve Stone

  34. I still cannot believe they pulled this off. I suspect there's a bit of "right place/right time" with his deteriorating relationship with his old employer and that made this possible. They have more work to do upgrading the roster this offseason, but man, the vibes around this franchise seem much better than they did 365 days ago.

  36. He seems universally loved on Twitter. Not seeing anything negative which is rare.

  37. In the times I've watched him, he's always been the anti-Matt Shepard in that he can really get the most insight out of whoever he is working with. And he genuinely loves the game and seems knowledgeable about it. I also think it speaks volumes that they he's a guy with a national portfolio as well. Just brings tons of credibility to the table.

  39. I know Benetti is a great story. I have no idea whether or not he's a good broadcaster. I did just see a clip of him sounding intelligent and thoughtful which you wouldn't get from any of their other TV crew.

  40. From the article as well, this to me says a lot.... it tells me that the org (whether that is Harris, Ilitch or both) took fan criticism about the broadcast to heart

  41. LOL - did they let him meet the Bally crew he has to work with before they got him to sign?

  42. https://ilitchnewshub.com/2023/11/tigers-ink-jason-benetti-to-multi-year-contract-as-television-play-by-play-broadcaster/ 127 games at least. If he has other obligations, Dan Dickerson will do the tv broadcast. It does mention working with Bally but maybe their situation is so up in the air that they decided to hire directly for multiple years. I don't know about everyone else but to me this says Ilitch is serious about fielding the best possible team.
