  1. Not to relitigate past discussions.... but the move of Fister move was blasted at the time by casual fans and talk about selling high. But then I will always maintain that DD panicked and couldn't be patient and within a matter of hours traded Ray and Eugenio Saurez. You could reverse or change a couple of moves during that general time period that would have dramatically changed the fortunes of this franchise the next 10 years.

  3. If we lost this game literally every time, then Trump would have won in 2020, the Trump Party would have super-majorities in the House and Senate from electoral routs in 2018, 2020, and 2022, and this country would be done for right now, at this minute.

  5. In 2023 the Tigers had 16 different pitchers start a game. In 2013 the Tigers had just 6. Talk about a lucky year when no one got hurt or was ineffective. Wow! Verlander 34, Fister 32, Scherzer 32, Sanchez 29, Porcello 29, & Jose Alvarez 6

  6. Even aside from partisan breakdowns, there are shifts in the body politic that happen every cycle that candidates need to address. 2016 experienced a large shift away from HRC/Dems from WWC voters, 2020 marked a large shift away from Trump/GOP with suburbanites as well as a smaller but profound shift with Latinos toward Trump (particularly in FL and TX). I know that election wins require many groups, but in 2020 in particular, there were at least three states that Biden won (Wisconsin, Arizona, and Georgia) where historically GOP voters in suburban areas made a profound difference on the outcome. Including some who voted for Trump in 2016 I would imagine. In 2024, though the polling crosstabs are probably way overstated, there's likely to be a continued shift among Latino voters.... I imagine Biden's campaign will invest a lot of money trying to stem that shift (and could succeed to a degree), but if you're running one of these campaigns, that's the stuff you're gonna think about. Obviously this could be countered within suburban areas and further shifts there, but you have to put in the work *and* persuade in order to maximize those gains. That's why it isn't all just about turnout.... if that's all you are focusing on, you aren't addressing larger demographic changes and are hedging that you can retain every single vote you earned last time. And that's risky as hell.

  10. This cannot be stressed enough. This is not the way a statesman should be talking. At all. Ever. Not even in private conversations. This is related to when Trump said he would be a dictator on day one, for one day only. Or when he suggested injecting Americans with cleaning agents like bleach to kill the COVID virus. Or when he mislabeled the Nobel Prize as the "Noble Prize". Or when he said he can grab them by the pussy and get away with it. Or when he said that Russia should release emails he suggested it had stolen from Hillary Clinton’s private email server. All said very seriously, even earnestly. Then when he was called on each of these, he employed some variation of the "I was just joking" defense. Nobody at his level should be allowed to joke about any of this. he's not a private citizen anymore. he's a public figure, always, 24/7, and by choice. He tries to get it both ways, and his acolytes will allow him to. We cannot follow suit.

  11. I am not sure I would be willing to give up the draft capital for a single year of Snell.
    1 point
  12. Id rather have Snell at 31 million this year than Flaherty at 15. For 16 million more you are potentially getting 4-5 more wins and given where we are at on the win curve that could be the difference between the playoffs and not. Of course the Tigers didn't know Snell was going to go for this low when they signed Flaherty but just throwing it out there in a hypothetical sense.

  13. I have read all his books, including ones not in the series. Sometimes, it is easy to figure it out. Other times, it's more difficult. I enjoy the characters too, especially Cork. In some of the later books, I will say that Cork's mentor - the wise old man - gets a little too much play and it becomes unrealistic.

  14. This one hits a little for me. 2 brothers basically retired who I barely see anymore, also 2 special needs boys at home. My father just passed last month and the amount of argument over minute details about the funeral sucked the life out of me.

  19. There are a lot of things that could possibly happen next. I think declaring bankruptcy is a non-starter because that might actually hurt Trump’s standing in red hats’ eyes. Same could be said of his selling substantial and visible chunks of his real estate portfolio, like Trump Tower—that would be a bad look. His unerring business sense and his billionaireship, or something along those lines, are a central part of his appeal. If it turns out he’s broke, then what is he, really? Although red hats may be so far gone on him, even that might not make a difference. I think a rich benefactor is still solidly in the picture, and someone no one has ever heard of could swoop in with money for his bond, although if Engeron really does have the power to reject the bond due to sourcing, the benefactor would need so many layers between them and a foreign government that no one could vet that in time to decide on the bond, and Engeron just accepts it with some vagueness still attached to it. I doubt Engeron will start seizing assets, especially Trump Tower, because there is a political cost to this, in that it could be the strongest confirmation yet to MAGA that the Deep State is arrayed against him, and Democrats are desperate to avoid the optics of that. I think the most likely possibilities in terms of next step are either (1) months of delays will ensue because of some combination of Letitia James adding an extra 30 or 60 days or so for Trump to come up with the money; appeals court pauses the judgment for some period of time; and/or subsequent supreme courts take up the bond case on appeal; or (2) Engeron accepts a reduced bond amount, substantially lower than $500-ish but substantially higher than $100MM, that one or more of the 30 companies will agree to foot the bill for. Either way, by the time we turn the calendar to April, we will be disappointed that Trump will be evading justice yet again.

  21. have yet to watch the final episode. My overall critiques of the series is that they should also do a proper Tuskegee Airman series as well which spends some time on the post-war history which is very interesting. They didn't focus on Big Week which was the critical back breaking of the Luftwaffe.

  22. Not quite the same but I keep having flashbacks to this https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1992/11/29/trump-went-broke-but-stayed-on-top/e1685555-1de7-400c-99a8-9cd9c0bca9fe/ After a decade of profligate borrowing, Trump lacked the cash to make his loan payments. Although he owned hotels, skyscrapers, casinos and an airline, his debts exceeded the value of his properties by hundreds of millions of dollars. Trump's lenders could have forced him into personal bankruptcy and stripped him of almost everything. But that didn't happen. Instead, the bankers and investors to whom Trump owed money made a series of deals that left him wealthy. They let him keep some properties and took control of others, and they reduced Trump's personal debt by about $750 million, more than four-fifths of the total. Then there was the time daddy bailed him out of his casino disaster. Between short memories and hero warship 40% of the voting public will probably bail him out again

  26. I’m resigned to the fact that there’s nothing more that can be done to motivate people. I don’t know what more can be said or shown or expressed. The country is at a dangerous crossroads and the people have the power to change it just by voting. It’s a simple task and easily attainable. No blood has to be shed. No tricks. Just go vote on Election Day for not Donald Trump and not republicans and our country survives.

  29. Look at the tape from the Lions game in which the Bears blew the huge lead. You get him a lead and he can tuck and run and things are fine. When the Bears fell behind and needed a game winning drive and needed him to throw the ball, he faltered. Hutchinson made a nice play but Fields has to sense that pressure. He never looked that way and was looked on the opposite side of the field. With his athleticism, he could have avoided that sack. He plays QB the way I play Madden. Drop back, run around, wait for someone to pop open.

  30. I know my role around here is to push back against the "everything that happens is good for Trump" tendency, but the reaction from his allies suggests to me that they don't see this one as a win and that this broke through in a way that previous incendiary comments haven't. Like, they've come down hard trying to spin this one their way, they aren't laughing it off. I would add that there's a lot of other content in that speech that didn't get as much attention (such as the section where he continues to trash on Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley) that could be potentially damaging at a time when he is struggling to retain support from marginal GOP voters who want him to go away and is struggling to raise money from GOP donors (both large and small $$$)

  31. the bears didnt want him around when they bring in a new qb. that would lead to a divided dressing room and potentially create factions. better to just start with a clean slate. also, justin fields isnt very good. they had a bears reporter on the radio this morning and asked him why fields went for such a low draft pick. why does the league view him as worth only a 6th round pick? "because they looked at the tape." how many open guys do you have to miss? how many sacks do you get because you hold the ball too long? why do you never throw people open? why duck and run constantly? because you cant read a defense. that's why. every athletic qb is not going to turn into lamar jackson.

  32. 2012 and 13, you had some combo of Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, Sanchez, and Fister with Smyly in reserve. 2014, Fister was traded, and Smyly backfilled until Price was acquired. That core was pretty durable. You had as good of a 1-5 as you will find in baseball history. Yes, they didn't make every start so you may remember some back end guys who filled in, but you are talking about your 7th and 8th guys not your 4th and 5th.

  35. I honestly don't know either, but at least in the case of the EJ Carroll bond (posted by Chubb Insurance), the bond had to be accepted by the presiding judge in order to post.

  36. A restructure doesn't take an extension off the table. The Lions now will have a $4.5 million cap hit next year even if Davis doesn't re-sign. They can roll that $4.5 million into a new signing bonus on a new contract.

  37. In the category of WWII era series or movies I'd love to see is one based on Louise Alberto Urrea's novel Goodnight, Irene. The book is based his mother's time serving with the Red Cross during the war as a "Donut Dolly" the group of women who were recruited to bring treats and a bit of "home" to the troops during WWIi, Korea and Viet Nam. These young women often found themselves near the front and in harms way.
