  3. I just double checked his minor league numbers, and I kinda want to push back on this. He was young for his level almost the whole way up, and has put up some pretty good numbers in the minors the last two years, particularly on the OBP side. It was defensive problems that hampered his prospect stock, particularly a case of the yips last year.

  4. This is basically the human condition. If you never see a person different from yourself, pretty soon what is different from yourself stops registering as a person, and it becomes hard to avoid falling into bigotry land. If you demand to live where you never see person different from yourself, you are pretty much already there.....

  5. I'm fine with first or second. The difference between first and third is about one plate appearance every 4 or 5 games, or about 36 plate appearances over the course of a season. There's a reason "traditional" lineups went the way of the dodo bird as smart people took over.

  9. My only retort here is that Harris may have some influence on keeping Torkelson in Detroit. I've been waffling on sending him down, but its gotten more one sided lately. And the Tigers are probably getting to that point, too. They could move Canha to 1B and recall Baddoo. Or they could time it with Urshela's return, with Canha to 1B and Vierling playing more OF. I kind of wonder if they might be looking at this road trip as a bit of a marker in the sand. These are some high stakes games in order to keep up in the playoff chase. Its a tough ask to get through the Yankee lineup unscathed. Its obvious that the offense needs something right now.

  14. The U.S. is attempting a 4-way peace agreement with us, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Gaza (or Palestine as a recognized two-state solution with Israel). They're calling it the "None go forward without the Others" deal. There are moving parts, not all happening at the same time... but, anyways, details: https://www.aol.com/none-forward-without-others-us-012341661.html (There's more than what I just clipped and posted below): ‘None go forward without the others.’ US mega-deal would tie together the futures of Saudi Arabia, Israel and Gaza ANALYSIS BY BECKY ANDERSON, MOSTAFA SALEM AND JENNIFER HANSLER, CNN May 3, 2024 at 6:47 AM Evelyn Hockstein/Reuters/Pool Saudi Arabia and the United States are finalizing the details of a landmark deal to strengthen bilateral trade and defense – but an agreement will not be reached if the kingdom and Israel do not establish diplomatic relations, US officials said... ...would solidify the seven-decade security alliance between Saudi Arabia and the US, and ... Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long sought relations with Saudi Arabia, home of Islam’s holiest sites, as the move could domino across the wider Muslim world. The US is currently negotiating one mega-deal involving three components, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Thursday. The first component includes a package of agreements between the US and Saudi Arabia, another component has the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, and a third component for a pathway to a Palestinian state. “All of them are linked together. None go forward without the others,” Miller said. For normalization to be realized between Saudi Arabia and Israel, there has to be a pathway for a Palestinian state and “calm in Gaza,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a panel at an economic conference in Riyadh this week. “The work that Saudi Arabia and the United States have been doing together in terms of our own agreements, I think is potentially very close to completion, but then in order to move forward with normalization two things will be required: calm in Gaza and a credible pathway to a Palestinian state,” he said.

  16. Perhaps AJ's arguably not doing enough to maximize the lineup, but any givem game he's got at least 3-4 blackhole batters that he has to strategize for...only so much a chef can cook with when 1/3 of his ingedients are poop.

  17. Malloy deserves a shot, let Canha and Ibanez handle first. There is real and meaningful baseball to be played here, and I dont know if they can wait out or work out whatever Tork is going through with him in the big leagues right now.

  18. What does Tork have to do to get benched? Attack a teammate? Slash Hinch's tires? Seriously...Torkelbust should be sent to Erie...do not pass Toledo...do not collect $200 million. Just....go away. Addition by subtraction.

  19. I personally would go: 1. Perez 2. Canha 3. Greene 4. Vierling 5. Carpenter 6-9. Doesn’t matter right now. Lump the guys that are hitting together.

  20. Not just self-perpetuating social isolation, but relatedly, also physical isolation. Ever notice how the people who are most agitated about the "border crisis" are those who live the farthest away from Mexico? They are also those most likely to loc up and go vigilante down there. Some travel over a thousand miles to do it! We see the same dynamic about exurban and rural people when it comes to just about any decent-sized city. I have heard someone say they didn't want to go into Green Bay because they don't want to get attacked by gangs of ******s there. Predictably, they live over half an hour outside Green Bay.

  21. Hinch knows they have a run scoring problem. That is due to having ****ty hitters. You can line them up anyway you want and they still are not going to score runs they way they have performed so far. He is lining hitters up according to how he thinks they will perform long term based mostly (I assume) on statistical projections. He's not going to base his line-up on short-term cold or hot streaks which could end any day. He didn't have Tork near the top of the order because he expected him to suck. He probably had him there based on how he hit at the end of last season. That wasn't working, so he moved him down after a period of time.

  22. I get that... But the bottom line to me is I want runners on in front of our best hitter. I added to the above: Greene has 6 RBI's with no runners. 6 solo HR's And 9 RBI's with runners on: 1 HR. My bottom line sticks. With me. I want OBP guys in front of him in the #1 and 2 spots. Personal preference.

  25. I don't know. If he's not hitting home runs, he's useless. He's not out there for his defense or base running. He has one job, hit Tork bombs. If he doesn't hit, replace him. I don't care where he was drafted.

  26. PS: I prefer the traditional location for the best hitter in the lineup: #3 spot.

  27. I subscribe to the best hitter second theory.

  28. Why the F won't Hinch put some on base guys in front of Greene so when he hits these HR's there could actually, possibly, you know, be some freaking base runners on base...? I know others are annoyed by this... I'm starting to REALLY get annoyed by this. We got 1 run last night... and I'm certain batting Greene first played a REAL role in that.

  32. Fascinating podcast on Exurbia from Rick Wilson today. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/democracy-at-stake-in-american-exurbia/id1650861232?i=1000654146579 Basically, those people be cray. And reasons for that are self-perpetuating social isolation. I think the suburbs that qualify in the Detroit Metro would be anything further out than Milford, I don't have a good feel for the situation in the northern suburbs past Pontiac. Ann Arbor creates a weird situation to the southwest...maybe Pinckney and Whitmore Lake. To the South well that's weird because of Downriver but clearly Dundee with the large Cabellas store is a mecca of sorts.

  38. Yeah - this used to be SOP, but it's not in Hinch's playbook. Apparently out of fashion, but the force at home is sooo much easier for a catcher than a tag play. I wonder how much the difficulty of the latter leaks into thinking about playing for the former. And of course turning the 5/2/3 DP is not beyond the defensive talents of either of the Tiger catchers.
    1 point
  39. Disagree, set up the force at home right away. Why wait for one batter? If you don't load them up, and it's not hit decently hard right to you, the guy scores standing up. I don't want to overthink these situations, they are straightforward...set up the force. The strikeout would be ideal, sure, but you can't rely on it. Take the next best thing, set up the force.

  40. Meanwhile, Malloy keeps getting on base, Baddoo is hitting for power and running the bases. Maybe we don't like their gloves or their arms, but at least one of those bats needs a callup. FWIW Baddoo has been playing exclusively in CF.

  41. Tork's in his 3rd year and completely lost in all phases of the game. I fail to see how allowing him to continue to fail at this level helps build his confidence for the present or the future, and letting him figure it out in a low leverage atmosphere just might salvage his value going forward. The Detroit Tigers will still be here when he's found his game.

  42. Aside from Baez, they need to figure out if the guaranteed outs will provide value in 2025 and beyond. Their entire offseason posture was about developing these guys in the majors. There's a reason Harris undersold all optimism.
    1 point
  43. Too many guaranteed outs in this lineup. At a minimum, Tork needs to be in Toledo, because he's worthless right now. Hinch not sending him down to protect his confidence doesn't seem to be helping his confidence. Finding his swing and raking at AAA just might. This is a game they absolutely should've won but their offense sucks so bad.

  44. Agree, there are a lot of other things that were happening, the pandemic obviously but people don't remember that QE was still happening all throughout the trump presidency and that's extremely inflationary to do when it's not necessary. He brought in tariffs (that Biden hasn't removed). Trump actually pressured the fed to keep QE and low rates. No doubt inflationary.
