  1. I remember working holidays in a previous job. Customer: "Oh, that's too bad you have to work today." My thoughts: Stay the **** out of here.

  4. Dingler has some power but is hitting like Jake Rogers so can only get to it occasionally. I'm fine with him backing up Jake next year... Workman was supposed to have some power but it's probably better at the moment for him to concentrate on hit tool to make certain he can connect enough to get to that power (or even have a chance at getting to MLB to make the attempt...). Luke Gold has some power and is having a nice year at WM, High-A: .568 SLG and .955 OPS. Malloy & Baddoo & Jung as previously stated... Guys who COULD develop power (Briceno, Campos) are too young/ early in development to have shown it much yet... We have SOME power in the system, not a huge amount and there's a lot of risk with what power we have... And not one dominant monster power guy (with enough hit tool to actually get to it) as far as I can see...

  5. Boebert & Gaetz have to be two Congress persons that have the biggest sleaze/ick factor of them all…. and to think the optics of those two sitting behind the defendant is going to play well with the jury, no matter what their political makeup, is the stupidest move imaginable. How idiotic.

  6. according to Tork, the team has a set of things they preach. How can you hold the line if you tell Javy to go ahead and do it his way? Of course to me, having any single approach to hitting for a whole team is a mistake out of the box. Every hitter has different abilities to do different things in the box and likewise different things they will fail at if you ask them to do. If a guy has good pitch recognition but holes in his swing -sure don't swing at what you can't drive - you can afford to get down in the count if you are not so likely to get fooled. If your pitch recognition is not so good but you have some plate coverage, way better to swing at a FB on the outer third for a single at 0-0 or 0-1 and put in in play than take it, let yourself get in a hole and K or roll over on a breaking ball that fools you. You need your hitters in the box doing what they do best and forget everything else. You'd never ask the average hitter to do what Cabrera did, regularly taking FBs to right and breaking balls to the pull side because most guys simply don't have the pitch recognition or strength to do it. We all understand that - but conceptually the same is true for all hitters - they will all reach their optimum with an approach tailored individually to what they can to. The logic argues there are some hitters you shouldn't ask to take pitches, or tell not to swing out of the zone, or whatever it is, because for some hitter that is what they need to do. So to have a team wide approach in some particular direction sets up some hitters to fail. Now in 5 years, when they have only drafted or traded for hitters that already fit the mold of hitters that hit like they like, then they will look brilliant, but they will have to pass on a lot of productive players to get there.

  9. This is similar to when I what I read on automative sites everyone is like don't buy new buy used. Then the automaker will discontinue a car they really liked due to poor sales and is like why did they get rid of that car I really like?

  10. and slightly related... a long time small business closes after the owners get old... "Oh, that's a shame. I loved that place. So sad" "When was the last time you went there to shop?" "I don't know... 1996?"

  13. Well I have supported Baez more than almost anyone on this board but it has reached a boiling point. But I still wouldn't release him until we have an acceptable replacement player. You can not expect an owner to eat 85 million dollars with the chance he plays better someplace else or worse harms your team in the process. However if Baez has "checked out" then you are forced into corner. Do you think Baez has given up ?

  15. Yeah, the basic Mitt platform of empowering private equity at the expense of the individual doesn't look that great. The thing about telework is not/NOT about improving the quality of US Government work, its to protect the owners of all those office buildings downtown.

  25. Btw, when the F are the federales just going to cuff Bannon and take him to serve his jail time? And if they can kick him in the keester a few times too, I’d appreciate it. And rip off at least one of the three extra shirts he’s wearing. (I’ll add to this list)

  27. I assumed your post was about the Tigers, even without your explicitly saying so, because this is a thread about the Tigers, and Javy Baez was a very hot topic here when you posted it. Nevertheless, everyone loves the idea of Tigers walking away from the presumed sunk cost that is Javy Beaz, but this isn't what economists might refer to as a typical consumer sunk cost. If you buy a lemon of a product and you know you're never going to be happy with it, you might as well throw it away and accept that the money is gone. That makes good economic sense in that case. But in the case of Javy, there's another factor to consider: unlike you getting rid of the thing you hate, where you don't even have to get a replacement for it if you don't want, the Tigers definitely do have to get a replacement for Javy, and the replacement might actually be worse than Javy. People will joke, or half-joke, or even seriously state, that no one could possibly be any worse than Javy, but I'm being serious here. If we were to dump Javy this afternoon and replace him with a freely available option from the minors, such as Eddys Leonard or Andrew Navigato, or we sign a currently-available free agent, like Adalberto Mondesi, and they end up doing even worse than Javy—which, again, ha ha, I know, how could anyone do worse, you or I could do better out there for much less money, yuk yuk, but again, let's be serious here—then the front office would get a non-stop ear full of **** from fans for letting Javy go without getting a better replacement. And if you believe that fans will be reasonable and give the Tigers credit just for letting Javy go even if his replacement does worse, then I invite you to refresh your understanding of the nature of emotional fandom by reading some of the posts on this very site. And what would be even worse is that, if Javy were to be cut, and he were to sign with someone else—and really, there are lots of teams who would take a chance on Javy as long as it costs them only the minimum—and he ends up doing better, or even well, someplace else, then the calls for Harris's head will reach a crescendo. And while you're at it, Scotty-poo, take that egghead in the dugout with you, and don't let the door hit either of you on the ass on your way out. Because there is still the reasonable hope, however much it is dimming, that Javy can still be saved and provide acceptable production for the rest of this contract, and we don't want to be holding the bag for someone else who's getting that benefit while we foot the bill.
