  1. For the 5,951st time, Avila was not good at his job overall. He made some good moves, but not enough to remain in that capacity, and probably should have been replaced prior to when he was actually let go.

  2. I'm confused, didn't these people just recently argue in front of the Supreme Court that the President had unlimited immunity, and Trump was indeed allowed to use that power when he was in office?

  7. yep. people made fun of them for (gasp) trying to get better last winter. imagine how completely crazy it is that front offices have to defend their choices to try to improve their teams.

  8. He is a good GM, but the pattern is familiar - one of the highest payrolls in MLB and no dominant closer. The next step will be to gut the farm system. He does have great teams everywhere he goes though. He does what he is hired to do even if it might hurt after he leaves.

  11. I'm debating if I even want to keep paying for the Bally app all summer. Getting blown out early or losing late are both reasons to find something more constructive to do. This team really stinks and they didn't seem to make any positive moves this last off-season. Other teams have rebuilt and are contending in the same time period. And the Tigers are just spinning their wheels. How much longer are the fans going to show the patience they're calling for? And yes, this coming from a huge Lions fan...rebuilding since the late 1950's. 🤣🤣

  12. I totally forgot about this game because I spent the day hanging out with my son who lives in Portland Oregon and is in town for the week. We went for a great walk in the botanical garden, had a tremendous lunch, and then went to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which was slow and tedious at times but finally picked up and was worth the 2 1/2 hours it took, which was better than this game from what I can tell.

  13. This is what bothers me and honestly it probably shouldn't because let people be fans the way they want but it's this idea that there were these superstars out here that Detroit definitely could have signed but didn't because "the owners cheap" rather than face the reality of the situation that the past off-season didn't really have any difference makers and people would be all up in arms had they actually signed some of the players people were clamoring for (looking at you Matt Chapman) rather than the Urshela. I understand the frustration but there was no silver bullet this off-season besides Ohtani who was never coming here.

  16. the problem with this line up is there's too many Colt Kieth's. although a solid singles hitter, the Tigers have to scrape three singles together to get a run. that's tough to do to win a lot of games. they did it earlier, but most teams have guys who can score in bunches with power. Big difference.

  17. They also added Flaherty, Canha and Chafin. Maeda too, although he hasn't helped so far.

  20. Out of what? Despite this week, they are still only 2 games out of the final playoff spot. Contending for the division looks unlikely, but there are still more than 100 games to play.

  21. the tiger self professed approach to hitting has always seemed to me to be optimized for hitting bad pitching. So you get it and you clean up and struggle the rest of the time. The DBacks pitchers didn't ever have the sense to pitch Baez outside.

  24. OK I'll bite, outside of Seth Lugo the rest of their signings have been lackluster. Wacha 4.45 ERA Smith 7.63 ERA Renfroe .160 AVG .518 OPS Frazier .189 AVG .547 OPS Lugo 1.79 ERA So the signings outside of Lugo have been Baez and Maeda level in terms of performance. The Royals have benefited from Witt playing like an MVP, Salvador Perez finding the fountain of youth and Ragans, Marsh pitching well. They are not doing well because they "improved the team through FA".

  27. I’ve been busy today and just took a look at the game and something is wrong with the official box score. It shows Matt Vierling walking twice and that obviously can’t be right. He doesn’t have the plate discipline to walk twice in a month let alone one game. I figure MLB will make the adjustment once they notice the error.

  28. This is so embarrassing and demoralizing. Tigers are making it extremely difficult to be a fan of this current roster. I’m the closest I’ve been since 2003 to giving up on a season. Thanks Al and Scott!

  29. And that is exactly one of the things that has obsoleted the idea of forcing guys to throw more pitches to get teams to their bullpens - bullpens are pretty damn good today, and deep enough that no-one has to go twice through the order. Maybe if you are lucky in three games you tire out a BP for your opposition's next series - great victory there.

  30. I have no problem with the way they moved him up to AAA. You really can't do much coaching when a guy is at 900+ OPS, which is where Tork was through AA. But they let him out of AAA just based on his power without him ever proving himself as a more rounded hitter (he hit only 234 in AAA) and that probably was a mistake. You may have great power but if your bat to ball skill isn't better than 234 in AAA you are going to have some struggles in the majors. Which has been amply proved. (I would note that in the transition to statistics like OPS and RC, that are better measures of a hitters *productivity*, it should be lost that plain old BA is still the measure of bat to ball skill.)

  31. I think that's fair. Although a little different this time since this team desperately needs any talent they can get.

  32. $25m for Monk is way too much unless it is only two years. Three if the last year is a team option. He would instantly be their second best creator behind Cade, and it probably wouldn't even be close. It would allow them to always have a guy on the court capable of running the offense, assuming Monty doesn't sit both at the same time. He is really good in the PnR. His 3PT shooting is slightly below average, but that is sort of misleading. Guys like Monk and Cade that always have the ball will almost always shoot a lower % than the catch and shoot guys. The defense is always paying attention to the ball. They don't get those easy wide open catch and shoot situations. They don't get as many corner attempts. So his shooting % isn't a huge concern. His defense however is a major concern. He is awful and pairing him with Cade would really be a problem. He would definitely be an upgrade. But 90% of the leagues rotation players would be an upgrade on this team. Less money or a short contract and it would probably be OK.

  33. Kiley Mcdaniel of ESPN put out his updated top 50 today and he has Jobe 7th, Clark 21st and McGonogle 50th. Jung is in the "just missed" category along with about 20 other guys.

  39. your scouts and general managers are paid to make those decisions and not go by what's in the press. so far, mize and tork have been massive failures. however, its still very early in their careers and plenty of time to turn it around. but the "lolz everyone said they were top prospects so the fact that they didnt pan out isnt a black mark on the people who drafted them" argument doesnt fly with me. the people who drafted them are supposed to know more than keith law or baseball america. its a results based business. if they fail, the people who drafted them fail.

  42. Mize is a middle of the pack guy. His stuff is average at best, and even out of college had an average fastball with little movement. He supposedly had amazing off speed stuff, which has yet to show in the majors. How he went #1 overall is beyond me.
