  1. Plus, I just want to add to this rebuttal. Grandparents and aunts (and I include myself in that group) ARE helping. I’ll do pick up and drop off when my niece or her husband can’t get there for two kids that are in two different schools. That doesn’t mean it’s ever gonna be possible to have the 1950 style of living anymore. It’s not going to happen so stop telling people they’re wrong for living their lives the way it makes sense to live them right now

  2. It's fair to say I painted with a broad brush. I am sure there are communities, including black and brown communities, where schools love their SROs. Speaking from my own personal experience, I used to be a foster parent and used to work in child welfare, and I had several children both as fosters and clients who were ostracized and isolated by their experiences with SROs. If a kid comes in with a neutral or positive mindset about cops, then they are likely to have a better experience than the ones I knew. Their past experience with cops were as they arrested mom or dad, or removed them from their home, or arrested them themselves. They would often express feeling followed and singled out by their SRO in a school environment, where kids should be able to make mistakes (obviously not to the magnitude we talk about in this thread) surrounded by supports, without the nagging concern that their mistakes will cause them to join their parents in the criminal justice system. From a more legal standpoint too, SROs are infamous for interviewing, interrogating, and getting statements from students without their parents present or ever having been informed. They want to have their cake and eat it too, with the school saying "we don't need a parent here to investigate school discipline", but the SRO sitting right next to the Assistant Principal during interviews, and all of a sudden that whole report your child gave for "school discipline" reasons finds its way into a police report on the desk of a Prosecutor. I would tell my foster children do not under any circumstance speak to the SRO or make any written statement without me present. It is in no way in their interests. The studies across a large sample size don't support the use of SROs and the media stories speak to that on a case study basis too. There are far more instances of SROs assaulting children for mere insubordination, arresting children for nonsensical things, and handcuffing autistic children as young as five than there are of hero SROs stopping or preventing a school shooting. That money would be far better spent on additional mental health professionals who can create authentic relationships with students, without the need to holster a gun in the process. I encourage you (and anyone really) to watch that John Oliver piece.

  3. 2012 Tigers were 3 back on September 18 and finished 3 games up. We’ve waited this long to have the chance to be upset at September losses. I’m going to let it play out quite a bit further before declaring the season over based on a single game.

  4. Just posted this over in the Media Meltdowns thread, but it's worth saying / asking here as well.... but after this indictment, does anyone really believe this activity stopped at just Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, Benny Johnson, etc.? Obviously it's not something any of us can prove, but it's exceedingly hard to believe that the commentators mentioned in the indictment are the only ones who benefited off of Russian payola over the years....

  5. It was supposed to be over when they played Boston It was supposed to be over when they played New York It was supposed to be over when they played Seattle It was supposed to be over when they played Cleveland I'm not suggesting they are in it, I never thought they were. Just enjoy it. I'm suggesting this team is showing us who they have been all season long. A team that with a few breaks could win 87 games or setbacks could lose 87 games. The seaon always has peaks and valleys. That's what .500 teams look like. They don't suck because they have some elements of good pitching to sustain them and get a few guys hot here and there. But they will lose games like this.

  9. I think we are going to finish roughly where the consensus opinion was around February 14. It has been a fun season. The frustrating item about this season is the what-ifs that can be played. With just one more reliable bat or just a little more health and the Tigers would be in the playoffs.

  10. We're around 5 games out but tangled up with several other teams, which makes it harder. They're going to have to play about .667 baseball the rest of the way, so 15-7. That gives them 85 wins and I don't know that it's enough. Everyone needs to stop looking past the upcoming A's series. I am sure they aren't but the Tigers are 8-30 vs. Oakland since 2018.

  11. It's not the speech, it's the law. You can't spread around foreign money without registering as a foreign agent and foreign money is about the only kind the law does say you can't spend on an US election - though there are even some loopholes there.

  21. There is so much wrong with this answer. Most likely Grandma and Grandpa are still working. And if they're not they're still active enough to have lives of their own. Also sharing duties (if possible) leads to more problems than they solve, since one or both sides of the extended family will eventually feel like they got the short end of the deal. In the end both the child, parents and grand parents may find themselves in a family rift.

  22. I think the next steps might be (1) sign two pitchers to longish-term contracts, like, three years, a starter and a reliever who fit the system but are undervalued in the marketplace—I have no names as of yet; (2) find a hitter who also fits the system and will sign a two-year deal to be a placeholder or a flip piece as we wait for lower-minors prospects to gel; (3) prepare Jackson Jobe to make his major league debut at some point next season.

  23. I wonder what Sartori and Menzin’s actual roles are in the organization? I thought maybe they’d be given the gate, but maybe they accepted substantially different roles in the organization from analytics. They are listed as “Vice President, Assistant General Manager” under Baseball Operations Leadership, but nowhere under Baseball Operations as it relates to analytics, performance science, or anything else, but I haven’t seen either of them representing the Tigers in the press or anywhere else. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn they have guaranteed contracts and have been offered title and a reduced role while the contracts are in force. But if I had to place a bet, it would be that neither of them have an active role in analytics anymore. By the way, on the front office web page, guess whose name is nowhere to be found? Hint: Special Assistants to the General Manager - Kirk Gibson, Willie Horton, Jim Leyland, Lance Parrish, Mike Russell, Alan Trammell

  32. For a society that is so sports crazy how can so many people, including so many players, have no understanding about how it works. It's very simple to explain: you root for YOUR team you root against the OTHER team No athlete - including Stafford, would appreciate playing in a city where the fans rooted for the players on the other team.

  35. Water vapor is less dense than air, the density of air goes down as it gets more humid (and of course as it get warmer) and so the aerodynamic resistance also goes down. Humid air "feels heavy" but that's just a perceptual misdirection. However the larger effect is probably on the ball, and a damper ball is heavier and generally less elastic - so in desert climates the balls are now all stored in a humidor to keep them from drying out and getting too lively. If you assume the humidor is keeping the balls uniform (probably a lousy assumption!) then you can say more humidity in the air at the park helps the ball travel.

  38. I didn't read into this answer when it was given and I don't read anything into it now. He was almost certainly concussed in that wildcard game, but was coherent enough to fake it for the NFL doc. Then after a one-point loss where his coach punted from the Lions 44 with 4:15 left, he had cameras shoved in his face. I really don't think he was thinking "let me send a subliminal message about my thoughts on Detroit fans." He was contractually required to be there, but was pissed and sore and wanted to get the interview over with as quickly as possible. That being said.... I'm still going to boo him. Just like I will boo Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith, Trevor Lawrence, and Josh Allen. And I'm probably going to chant Goff's name. Just like I will if the chant starts against the Bucs, Seahawks, Jags, and Bills. Stafford was here 12 seasons and went 75-90 without winning a playoff game. I loved him while he was here and was never one of those morans who called for Shaun Hill or Dan Orlovsky to replace him. I appreciate him for having put his body on the line for the Lions, just like I appreciate any number of other Lions players who played for the Lions. But he's not some living legend. He's not Brady returning to Foxborough. The time for flowers will come after he retires. Maybe when all is said and done he will be worthy of consideration for the Pride of the Lions. Maybe when all is said and done he will be worthy of consideration for the Hall of Fame. When those discussions come up, or when he comes back to Ford Field for a Lions playoff game with a Lions cap on, in a seat between Calvin and Eminem, then I'll cheer him. I don't know why everyone feels like we have to cheer him now, or we will never get the chance again. If he wants a ticket to a Lions game after he retires, I'll bet he probably has a connection who can hook him up (leave the wife and kids at home though, sorry).
