I share your concerns, but MSU is arguably the most credible pollster from a reputation standpoint to poll Michigan in quite a while. Also the guy who runs it (Matt Grossman) is pretty clear eyed and impartial. I do stand by what I said above though.... the political geography for Trump, even with the concerns about the Arab population in Michigan, really isn't that great. He lost the state by 150,000 votes last time and it's very likely that Oakland, Kent, Ottawa, etc. are going to shift left in this cycle. And with Detroit potentially *exceeding* 2020 turnout (very possible), it's very tough sledding.2 points

Regardless of US president, I always wanted to move to Montreal. I went there once and became smitten. World class museums by day and strip clubs at night. A truly magical place.2 points

Leaving the country over politics is stupid. Stay and fight for what you believe in. It’s 4 years but it could end up much longer if people just give up and leave.2 points

He looks like a hitter. So many of them don't, but he does. He has that classic balanced stance, stands tall with square shoulders and the bat seems quick. Of everyone who posts here I am by far the least qualified to assess talent, truly, no one else is even close.2 points

If Trump is going to praise Hitler, how is Trump not going to emulate him, and not take it all the way? Power over the lives and deaths of an entire nation of people is the ultimate power trip. It's exactly what Trump admires about Kim Jong Un!1 point

This is an idea not to be casually dismissed. If America were to fall to Trump and then join forces the Russia-China-North Korea-Iran Axis, the rest of the world wouldn't be able to stand up to it. The remaining NATO countries would either be overrun militarily, or cave to right wing fascism from within or at the point of America's nuclear gun. And Canada would probably be the least safe place to go, due to proximity, and they'd be the first to fall, probably without a shot fired. In this scenario, the last countries standing might could end up being Australia and New Zealand, only because of their geography, although they could simply collapse economically at that point.1 point

True. What's interesting is people from the northern part of the Midwest and those from upstate/western NY are often pitted against one another, even though they have a lot in common. I still roll my eyes whenever I hear somebody refer to people from the Northeast as 'elites' even though most of us are hardworking people struggling to make a living-just like the people in the rest of the country.1 point

I think about this and I remember that when abortion was put up for a referendum in Ireland all sorts of women flew back into Ireland from around the Globe (even though they could vote absentee) just to cast their votes in person to strike down the antiquated system which had governed their bodies and their mothers' and grandmothers' bodies. EDIT: I was wrong that absentee voting was allowed. Irish Expats Travel Home to Vote on Abortion Referendum - The New York Times (nytimes.com)1 point

I've been watching a lot of old television shows and movies while on medical leave. I'm struck by how women were often portrayed as being adult children needing the guidance and calming presence of a man. It's very subtle, but I'm sure girls were influenced by them. I also shudder to think that I used to sing along to a song that began "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man."1 point

I cannot express enough how really bone-chilling it is for a woman to hear this very obviously misogynistic rants from these men . It, no lie, gets me extremely anxious, and even more so when I hear the audience laughing and applauding it. I find myself feeling like I want to scream.1 point

Mass extermination is very good for business. Yes, some would be kept alive to work in the camps. Zyklon B - the gas used in the gas chambers was made by a company named IG Farben. IG Farben is still in business today but now known as BASF.1 point

Depends on how it's done. In the short term it might be if one of the steps is forced labor. And unfortunately a lot of decisions are made on short term consequences. Will it come to this? I'm not sure-though our history: slavery, camps for Japanese Americans in WW2, treatment of Native Americans, etc. suggests that it's not out of the realm of possibility. In the long term... it absolutely would be horrible for business because they'd have to compete for a smaller labor pool.1 point

I agree-the most recent elections in the Netherlands and in Austria show that there may be trouble brewing there. I honestly don't know if I'd be in danger or not. I do worry about my nieces, and about my colleagues from Central America. I personally think people like my colleagues make our country stronger, and that a country in which women are able to make a contribution outside of the home is also a stronger country.1 point

I wouldn't leave the country over politics which is why I am not thinking of leaving. Intellectually, this country is dead to me now. There is little interest among the masses in science or truth or any of the principles which guide my life. However, it is still a good place for me to live my day to day life. At my age, I would only leave if I thought another country would provde a significatly better lifestyle and I don't think that would be that easy to find. I guess I could reconsider when I am comfortably ready to retire.1 point

In the 90s, I went on a date with a man whose parents grew up in Nazi Germany. I don't remember his exact words, but he said something along the lines of Adolph's accomplishments making him proud to be German. We did not have a second date.1 point

I'm not a huge fan of endorsements. I do think pointing out some major republicans voting for Harris is big, but when it comes to celebrities, I generally don't care, regardless of what side they fall on. Generally I think they are out of touch anyway and it's just word salad that they deliver their endorsement with. That said, I'd love to see this one seen by more people, well done.1 point

The idea of replacing Darnold right now just feels like trying to fix something that’s working perfectly well. If they want to get Stafford, they should do it in the offseason, to replace Darnold but as a bridge to McCarthy. I still think they could be the next landing spot for McAfee’s golden boy Aaron Rodgers. Complete the Favre trajectory.1 point

very quick bat, so he doesn't get fooled that much - and results in a relatively low K rate for a modern player. Like Riley he falls into over swing mode too much. It's so hard to get young players (and old ones for that matter) to understand the physics that at their bat speed levels, barreling the ball is more important than swinging the bat hard(er).1 point

I think his grooves will expand. Certainly 15-25 home runs, .280, .800 ops not out of the question. He looks like a player to me. I think he makes an all-star team even before his initial contract is up. Can barrel it up to all fields. Seems like a gym rat type that will work to improve1 point

sam darnold will turn back into sam darnold at some point. i'd much rather have him on the vikings than matt stafford. stafford is a much better qb. but the vikes drafted a qb in the first round last year. dealing their limited draft capital for an old qb like stafford doesnt seem like a solid long term move. otoh, flags fly forever.1 point

Trump could perform an abortion on a 12 year old girl that he impregnated, put it on PPV and the evangelical right wingers would pay $49.99 to watch it and slut shame the girl.1 point

I'd steer clear of anything on Newsweek. It's not what it used to be. Remember when JD Vance said one valid reason to oppose certification on Jan 6 was things being out in the press that were inaccurate? This is an inside job. Create a fake scandal then when it gets out and debunked, that provides the fuel to question all the votes already cast and create doubt, blah blah blah. This is a plant.1 point

Welcome to the site. They won’t be patient. He showed some promise in the playoffs and his performance at the end of the season wasn’t terrible. But that’s not good enough. He has to get better. He’s in the plans for now because that’s the only option but they won’t let him get in their way if they see an opportunity. His status as a 1:1 will not interfere at all with a decision.1 point

I always saw Vierling's value as his versatility. You don't neglect to fill a regular spot b/c you have Vierling but you have Vierling around to fill those holes that always pop up, either through injury, slumps, or days off. 4 days a week you'll need to fill one of those.1 point

This is lost on people who think the only way to improve a team is to spend on free agents, but you are onto something here. This isn't to say the team shouldn't dip into free agency, but they need to be selective and do research on the soft factors before adding somebody to the mix.1 point

We need a power hitting RH bat. I don't care what some random stats say, he didn't provide the power or run production we need. And any stats that show him better than Riley Greene is a flawed stat...like a small sample size.1 point
