  1. I know they say that on any given Sunday anyone can win or lose in the NFL. But you know what…It’s ****ing Saturday! Let’s Go Lions!!! 🦁 🦁 🦁

  2. I did it correctly so well 40 years ago that his face turned beat red. He was jumping up and down and scanning the seats for the culprit and being the pseudo intellectual I am I shouted out “He thinks we’re all guilty. It’s like a Kafka novel!“ Which actually got a rise out of a few people in the stands. I mean, after all, it is baseball and attracts a higher class of people. It’s not a tractor pull.

  3. approve/disapprove has become pretty useless because as you note, it's meaning to someone being surveyed has shifted from being a euphemism for "would you vote for this person" used to soften/evade the direct question, to "are you happy with things". Those are two significantly different questions. The malleability/transformation of language is a problem for pollsters. The very much want to be able to keep asking the exact same question over time in order to provide anchor points for use in adjusting samples, but whether the pollsters like it or not, language use does change. And worse than that, the whole emotional state of the population changes. Americans are more discontent for less reason than they used to be. That's not to say a lot of people don't still have it hard, but the degree to which people are willing to accept/expect life being hard has fallen - a lot.

  5. Also with regards to Biden's approval, I voted for him in 2020 and Kamala in 2024. Yet if a pollster called me up and asked if I approved or disapproved of Biden, I'd answer "disapprove". Particularly him staying in the race way too long and not bowing out, along with other issues surrounding how he followed through on policy (namely the border and Ukraine) I suspect that I'm not the only one. Something to consider - there's likely a not-insignificant subset of the disapprovers who track as reliable D voters who don't like Trump or the GOP

  6. I mentioned here before that I had my 9th birthday party in the lower deck in left on the Fidrych Yankees Monday Night game. The last day of school was the Friday before. Summer was starting. I was going into surgery in a week. All night I was surrounded by friends and family, some no longer with us. We expected a crowd of 20k, it was jam packed with 48k. The cheers on every out. The post-game curtain call, which was a rarity back then. From memory, almost 50 years later, I could write a 5,000 word essay on that night. Easily the most memorable day of my childhood. But ask me to write 500 words about anything I did in 2017 and I’d be stumped without checking emails or a calendar from that year. I’m so silly that whenever I watch a replay of that game I still hold out the faint hope that when the camera pans the crowd I might spot us, somehow having never noticed before. If someone offered me a chance to go back to that day for 6 hours in exchange for $100,000 I’d write a check in a heartbeat.

  7. We were coming out of such a dismal season in '75. They lost 19 straight that year. Lolich, Hiller, Horton and Freehan were all that's left from the glory days and they were past prime. The farm system was another 2-3 years from developing anything. And I remember it VIVIDLY, even though I was just 11. It was a cool and cloudy Saturday and the Indians were playing the Tigers. It was on TV (I think only about 40 games were televised then). His first start. Fidrych gets up there, he's all arms and legs, he was shaped like a stick figure with curly hair and he'd pitch the ball and the catcher would return it and he just couldn't wait to throw another pitch. My dad had me go with him to a plumbing store on Van Dyke near 14 mile. He and the store guy get into some lengthy conversation about nothing that mattered to me and I sat there watching the game on this little black and white TV. The Bird just cruised through the game. Not looking this up, this is on memory, but he 2-hit them, right? And that game was over in less than 2 hours. You could tell - even then, that that cat was different. He looked like he wants to burst out of his own skin, he's stomp around the mound after every out. And 6 weeks later he ws a superstar. In an interview the interviewer said "that was a tragically short career". He said "Tragic? It wasn't tragic, I started an All-Star game, I was on the cover of Rolling Stone, it was great". In 1985 he suffered an injury (working on his truck, of course) and went and got an MRI, which weren't common then. They found the tear in his shoulder and he was told it could be repaired and in a year it could be as strong as ever. He was 30. He could have done it but he just said that he didn't want to set himself up for the heartbreak again because he was happy where he was. How do you not root for a guy like that?

  8. That magical year in 1976 will never be repeated again. You had to be there to understand it. It was the most exciting individual Tigers season since I've been a fan. More fun than Cabrera's Triple Crown year or Verlander's Cy Young/MVP season, Fielder's 50 homer season or any other season.

  9. I don't know what the troll is about, but why do you guys think it's a good thing that your president elect is trolling people? That seems like the last thing a real President should be doing to the country he is supposedly representing and leading.

  12. I rather doubt all the people who have been chronically politically unhappy since about 2012 are going to get much happier under Trump. If the GOP doesn't hold in 2028 (and it's hard to imagine Trump giving Vance any air of his own) we will be on track to have 4 consecutive elections where a party either fails to re-elect an incumbent or hold the office. And actually Clinton, Bush and Obama were more the outliers serving two terms three times in a row - 4 of 5 if you count back to Reagan.) Other than the early stretch from Washington to Jackson there have been a lot of one term Presidencies. And I think this is the first presidency that has ever started out as lame duck on day one. I suppose you can say Truman was an immediate lame duck after his 1st election, but he had already served 3/4 of a term before he stood. Trump obviously is a past Prez, but with the 4 years out it's not/won't be the same admin at all. So we have no history as to how that plays.

  13. The uniform patch on the A’s new uniforms. I love it when a plan doesn’t come together, and the oligarchy is shamed. Eventually, being a master of every universe you encounter doesn’t work.

  14. Donald Trump has frequently said he would resolve inflation and cost of living issues, and would do so in short order. Yet many of his proposals (such as his tariff plans, healthcare, various cuts being proposed under the auspices of DOGE, etc.) would, taken to their logical end, would increase inflation. Exit polling post-election, as well as general over the past week or so, indicates that despite the marked lack of discussion from his transition team as to the economy and cost issues (they have largely talked about immigration and culture war issues instead), this is the number one reason he won and remains the number one issue for voters So what's the plan? What's he gonna do? Is he prepared to deal with any of this when he takes the oath? If and when costs begin to rise at a faster pace, how much rope does he get? Because I have seen zero indication whatsoever that he'll make my life any better on that front

  17. “It’s hard, but you have to treat it like any other game.” My buddy from undergrad is driving up from Chicago for this one. Reservations at a new place downtown, Javier’s, then aiming to be inside by 7pm. Refraining from speaking until then, need to rest the vocal chords.

  18. Two points: CNN, like all cable news networks, sucks. Glad to see them called out on bad reporting and held accountable for it. Linking to a Fox News article talking about another network settling a defamation lawsuit is *chef's kiss*

  19. That was an amazing time. I got to see him pitch but it was the next year. He won and he was pretty good but we didn't know he was on his way to injury shortened career. Watching the replay of that Yankee game and seeing how electric the stadium was was amazing. As for your memory same here. But there is a side benefit of putting a gallon jug of memories into the shot glass of the here and now. My daughter was at a high school theater improv competition last night and my wife in the audience (she was there, I was not), told me because she more life experiences to draw from she was thinking of ideas for the kids way before the kids on stage were thinking things up. Whatever that would be worth to you, dunno.

  20. I am so sold on this team! I see national score predictions, high majority, being within a TD, like 31-27… Like we’ve seen in other games, I can see a score that’s closer than the actual play late, then the Lions pull away. All that and I won’t predict a score. I just don’t think it’ll be as close as many seem to think. Lions cover easily, last I saw is 9.5!

  24. The final game at Tiger Stadium, after the game and players came from Centerfield, Wasn't he the first one out there? I was at the game, I think he was. Gathering dirt and putting it in a baggy. I still get emotional about that place, but also understood why they needed to make the move.

  31. I’m anxious, like I should be, but I’m also confident. This team under Dan Campbell has never lost a game like this before. I can count on one hand the number of games that they should have won but came up short. 2024 Bucs, 2023 Cowboys and Bears, 2022 Panthers. Two of those I can legitimately attribute in part to external factors (officials and field conditions). None of those games had the kind of implications this one does. 25% blowout win (17+), 25% comfortable win (9-16), 45% close win (1-8), 5% loss Prediction Detroit 38 Washington 27
