I don't get the criticism here. Not counting Dobnak (that was a pure salary dump to balance the trade), the Tigers have added five pitchers to the mix. When your depth is ravaged*, that's a good thing. I much prefer that to putting all your eggs in one basket. And we are criticizing them for not giving up enough? I'm trying to figure that one out.6 points

Very good point. We’d have to screw up big time at this point to not make the playoffs—and a lot of what happens once you get to the playoffs small sample size and somewhat unpredictable. Better to make some small additions to the roster than sell off prospects that will likely be a part of many more future playoff runs. The Tigers are BY FAR in the best position for this year and the next 5 years out of all teams in the division—so going for broke at a single trade deadline doesn’t make that much sense. As much as I want the Tigers to bring in a bunch of established talent, I’d rather they be conservative at this point. We went balls to the wall with DD at the helm and it never paid off fully…..why not try a different strategy?4 points

The Tigers are the only team in MLB where their entire division has thrown in the towel. Everyone else sold and essentially conceded the playoff spot. They didn’t need to be as aggressive as others today since they aren’t fighting to secure a playoff spot. Everyone else has to put pedal to metal just to ensure they get in. Playoffs are a crapshoot either way. You can’t just build the best team and expect to win the World Series. They could’ve added Suarez, Miller, and Bednar today and it still wouldn’t improve their chances of winning it all. Definitely would’ve helped get them in the playoffs but that’s not an issue.4 points

There’s times where I feel like I’m a street urchin in a Dickens novel, shivering in the cold and peering through the windows of the rich people’s homes, watching them dine and celebrate a Christmas dinner of roast pheasant and razzberry dressing.4 points

Has any other GM acquired a pitcher who has already pitched 6 innings of 1-run 3-hit ball with his new team?4 points

I like it. Build for October and get options in place. I still think something bigger is afoot.4 points

What I like about Heuer and Sewald is they don't tie down a roster spot right now, but have upside. You can only carry 8 relievers, so bringing a couple guys in as options down the road is something you can afford to do when you have payroll flexibility and a large divisional lead.3 points

Im not saying Charlie Morton is old, it's just his first baseball card came with a pack of Lucky Strikes. 🤣2 points

Lemonade out of lemons? Scott Harris has just communicated to this group of guys that he believes they are good enough as is to take us deep into October and maybe even November, and don’t need help from high-priced trade targets that cost us anyone from the top of our system. That kind of thing means a lot to extreme competitors as major-league players are, especially on a team on which most of them all came up together and are growing as major leaguers together. Take that for what it’s worth.2 points

I look forward to the Friday night game when Casey and Finnegan dress up in City Connect uniforms to combine for 9 well-pitched innings.* *I expect that only Canadians - or viewers of Windsor's Channel 9 in the '70s or '80s - will get that reference.2 points

I will reiterate that I do not believe Harris will liquidate anything near the top of our system, and the prices paid so far seem to indicate he might not have to. The top guys I think we'd be willing to let go are Briceno and Max Anderson, and that might be (more than?) enough to pry Bednar out of Pittsburgh.2 points

Rental bats just don’t bring much. Has any one brought back more than Michael Fulmer since the Cespedes trade? And other than Chapman, very few, if any rental relievers have brought back a top 100. Controlled pitching (and hitting) will bring top prospects. Rentals hardly ever do.2 points

I like the Tigers site, 2022 World Series champ Montero. Is he going to distract hitters with the ring?2 points

This is just the kind of thing I went to look up. Morton has pitched at least five innings in 10 of his last 11 games, and has given up more than three runs in only two of those games. Pitcher wins don’t mean anything, of course, but for what it’s worth, he is 7–1 during that stretch with a 3.88 ERA and almost exactly 9 K/9. I’m pretty sure we got him to start and not for anything like long relief. If anyone is a odd man out, it’s probably going to be Melton, at least until Morton shows he doesn’t have it anymore. And now I want to know what Morton’s Statcast card looks like during that stretch, versus the season-long card we see on the Savant site.1 point

so if they meet in the playoffs, the Tigers are fortified by Finnegan, and the Astros are fortified by Correa so if they meet in the playoffs, the Tigers are fortified by Finnegan, and the Yankees are fortified by Bednar1 point

I was particularly thinking of a depiction of the British attempt to capture him and he escapes, by sea, to end up in America. The story of before he got here adds a lot IMO.1 point

I wouldn't say it wouldn't improve their chances of winning the World Series at all, but it wouldn't change it enough to make it worth giving up top prospects. If you are going to give up top prospects, you need to acquire players that can help you longer than just this season and post-season. The only exception might be acquiring an ace starter. I think that's the only type of player that can boost your chances of winning the World Series enough where you might take the chance. Even then though, the Tigers never won it all with Verlander and Scherzer.1 point

At least right now it looks like Liranzo is sticking behind the plate. That would be my guess on why he’s rated higher.1 point

yes. but have to believe they can replace him by his expected 2027 eta Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40 Like fellow Tigers pitching prospect Troy Melton, Randall was a catcher growing up before taking his strong arm out from behind the plate and onto the mound. After two years in the bullpen at the University of Arizona, he transferred to the University of San Diego and became a workhorse starter and hit the scouting radar. The Tigers selected him in the third round and signed him for a $700,000 bonus, then gave him a cameo appearance with four innings at Single-A Lakeland at season’s end. Randall is a classic power sinker-slider pitcher with a low three-quarter delivery and rotation, but he actually saw an uptick in his strikeout rate when he became a starter at San Diego. His heavy sinker sat around 94-95 mph but has been known to ramp up to 98 and induces a ton of ground balls. His high-spin slider is a nice swing-and-miss pitch off the sinker. He has a feel for a changeup, but his ability to develop it could determine whether he ends up a starter or reliever as he advances. Part of what separated Randall as a starter in college was his ability to repeat his stuff and hold his velocity late into starts. The Tigers want to give Randall a chance as a starter, with a repertoire and style that compares to former Cleveland starter Justin Masterson. But with Randall’s big body frame and sinker/slider approach, he draws a natural comparison to current Tigers reliever Jason Foley. He’s older for his Draft class, which gives him a chance to move through the lower levels quickly if he has success.1 point

Or the free spending owner dying and the kids being cheap, something we know all too much about. They had some oddly backloaded deals the last two years. So yeah, there is some chicken coming home to roost here, even if CBT is based on AAV. There are some cash flow issues they are working around.1 point

Hmm, I agree with the chips you mentioned. A GM with the ability to 'make a deal' could do this. I think Harris is good in many areas - but making deals to acquire good MLB players I question.1 point

Owens DFA is interesting. Almost like they have him included in a trade. Because he is on the IL, he cannot be outrighted. So if they don't find a taker for him today, they have to release him if he clears waivers.1 point

I have heard the term before and it's pretty obvious what it means. It's part of a corporate BS culture of which I don't want any part. I had never heard the term used in the context of a teenage girl who services men in a spa. In that context, it was not only BS, it was immoral and disgusting. I am not following any party line. If any Democrat is involved, I want them to be severely punished just like Trump. My dislike of Trump has nothing to do with politics. I have known for over 40 years that he is a conman and sexual predator.1 point
