I don't get the criticism here. Not counting Dobnak (that was a pure salary dump to balance the trade), the Tigers have added five pitchers to the mix. When your depth is ravaged*, that's a good thing. I much prefer that to putting all your eggs in one basket. And we are criticizing them for not giving up enough? I'm trying to figure that one out.6 points

Very good point. We’d have to screw up big time at this point to not make the playoffs—and a lot of what happens once you get to the playoffs small sample size and somewhat unpredictable. Better to make some small additions to the roster than sell off prospects that will likely be a part of many more future playoff runs. The Tigers are BY FAR in the best position for this year and the next 5 years out of all teams in the division—so going for broke at a single trade deadline doesn’t make that much sense. As much as I want the Tigers to bring in a bunch of established talent, I’d rather they be conservative at this point. We went balls to the wall with DD at the helm and it never paid off fully…..why not try a different strategy?4 points

The Tigers are the only team in MLB where their entire division has thrown in the towel. Everyone else sold and essentially conceded the playoff spot. They didn’t need to be as aggressive as others today since they aren’t fighting to secure a playoff spot. Everyone else has to put pedal to metal just to ensure they get in. Playoffs are a crapshoot either way. You can’t just build the best team and expect to win the World Series. They could’ve added Suarez, Miller, and Bednar today and it still wouldn’t improve their chances of winning it all. Definitely would’ve helped get them in the playoffs but that’s not an issue.4 points

There’s times where I feel like I’m a street urchin in a Dickens novel, shivering in the cold and peering through the windows of the rich people’s homes, watching them dine and celebrate a Christmas dinner of roast pheasant and razzberry dressing.4 points

Has any other GM acquired a pitcher who has already pitched 6 innings of 1-run 3-hit ball with his new team?4 points

I like it. Build for October and get options in place. I still think something bigger is afoot.4 points

What I like about Heuer and Sewald is they don't tie down a roster spot right now, but have upside. You can only carry 8 relievers, so bringing a couple guys in as options down the road is something you can afford to do when you have payroll flexibility and a large divisional lead.3 points

Im not saying Charlie Morton is old, it's just his first baseball card came with a pack of Lucky Strikes. 🤣2 points

Lemonade out of lemons? Scott Harris has just communicated to this group of guys that he believes they are good enough as is to take us deep into October and maybe even November, and don’t need help from high-priced trade targets that cost us anyone from the top of our system. That kind of thing means a lot to extreme competitors as major-league players are, especially on a team on which most of them all came up together and are growing as major leaguers together. Take that for what it’s worth.2 points

I look forward to the Friday night game when Casey and Finnegan dress up in City Connect uniforms to combine for 9 well-pitched innings.* *I expect that only Canadians - or viewers of Windsor's Channel 9 in the '70s or '80s - will get that reference.2 points

I will reiterate that I do not believe Harris will liquidate anything near the top of our system, and the prices paid so far seem to indicate he might not have to. The top guys I think we'd be willing to let go are Briceno and Max Anderson, and that might be (more than?) enough to pry Bednar out of Pittsburgh.2 points

Rental bats just don’t bring much. Has any one brought back more than Michael Fulmer since the Cespedes trade? And other than Chapman, very few, if any rental relievers have brought back a top 100. Controlled pitching (and hitting) will bring top prospects. Rentals hardly ever do.2 points

I like the Tigers site, 2022 World Series champ Montero. Is he going to distract hitters with the ring?2 points

Key is Skubal, Mize and Flaherty staying healthy. If they are, everything else will fall into place, the Tigers have plenty of tools.1 point

I'd rather they start Paddack and Melton. Morton has been horrible this year.1 point

Harold Reynolds seems to remember that Charlie Morton was pretty good in the 5-to-10-year-ago range, so of course he predicts that Charlie Morton will start playoff games for us this year.1 point

On his own ship. In fact he defied his father. Once he got to America and told the Continental Congress he'd work for free. The fact that he survived the Battle of Brandywine is also interesting. My favorite is his relationship with a Virginia slave prior to Yorktown. One named James, who was owned by a fellow named Armistead. Lafayette used him as a spy on the British.1 point

He was prospect eligible and was Seattle’s 10th ranked prospect I think? So definitely not close to a top 100 no matter how you try and spin it. I will say I am disappointed we didn’t get Bednar as he was had for less than Jung/Anderson/Hamm, although none of those are catchers like 2 of the guys the Pirates got.1 point

Considering the cost Finnegan not a bad option. He's made 40 appearances and allowed no runs in 31 of those, 1 run in 5 others and multiple runs in 4 games, three of which came this month. Before July 10 his ERA was 2.36, with a FIP of 3.24. Hopefully he can shake off July.1 point

yes. but have to believe they can replace him by his expected 2027 eta Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40 Like fellow Tigers pitching prospect Troy Melton, Randall was a catcher growing up before taking his strong arm out from behind the plate and onto the mound. After two years in the bullpen at the University of Arizona, he transferred to the University of San Diego and became a workhorse starter and hit the scouting radar. The Tigers selected him in the third round and signed him for a $700,000 bonus, then gave him a cameo appearance with four innings at Single-A Lakeland at season’s end. Randall is a classic power sinker-slider pitcher with a low three-quarter delivery and rotation, but he actually saw an uptick in his strikeout rate when he became a starter at San Diego. His heavy sinker sat around 94-95 mph but has been known to ramp up to 98 and induces a ton of ground balls. His high-spin slider is a nice swing-and-miss pitch off the sinker. He has a feel for a changeup, but his ability to develop it could determine whether he ends up a starter or reliever as he advances. Part of what separated Randall as a starter in college was his ability to repeat his stuff and hold his velocity late into starts. The Tigers want to give Randall a chance as a starter, with a repertoire and style that compares to former Cleveland starter Justin Masterson. But with Randall’s big body frame and sinker/slider approach, he draws a natural comparison to current Tigers reliever Jason Foley. He’s older for his Draft class, which gives him a chance to move through the lower levels quickly if he has success.1 point

Bednar still being available suggests that the Pirates asking price is currently too high. Any contending team would love to add him, yet none have.1 point

Give me Bednar and Keller for Liranzo, Anderson and Hamm. Dont trade any of Clark/McGonigle/Rainer/Briceno under any circumstances. I’m not super interested in acquiring another bat among those who are on supposedly on the block.1 point

There are legitimate questions around land use, I know we've had cases where villages near where we live have intervened in areas which are agricultural in nature but could be developed for future subdivisions and housing for instance. But at the same time, we have seen instances of people complaining when these developments are happening on land that it isn't conducive to farming as well, and that just strikes me as people signaling their politics more than any actual legitimate complaints. Good example is that we had an announcement in the village I live in about a month ago of a solar farm development on a swampy piece of land with land that has seen farm activity in the past but isn't necessarily the most ideal for it (zoned Industrial, adjacent to the Illinois River/I&M Canal). And not only is the company coming in to develop the solar farm, they are also funding the reconstruction of a road that had been abandoned for 15 years that would provide a better connection for some residents to access the town adjacent (Morris, IL) and vice versa. Despite the obvious benefits of this development both in terms of tax revenue, energy generation and reconstruction of a village/county road connection being paid for by the development, the usual people on Facebook still whined and cried about it.1 point

Like Dombrowski the Padres have never been shy about trading premium prospects for proven vets so seeing them give up a top 5 overall prospect certainly isn't surprising.1 point

Nah, I just don’t think he feels desperate. He’ll pull the trigger if he feels it’s a good value, as it should be.1 point

Sewald? Is Harris really going to go the bargain basement route to build a post-season roster? I hope he is just taking flyers on these guys and still has a big move in mind.1 point

I want more run prevention...don't see a real offensive swing that will change much.1 point

I still expect them to acquire a good reliever like Bednar. Their need there is too obvious to ignore and the chaos magic hasn't been working this year. I don't believe Montero is going to be their only acquisition.1 point

The defense should be fine. The interior DL may takes its lumps against teams like Baltimore and Philly, but they have the DPOY betting favorite on the edge, Anzalone/Campbell behind them, one of the best safeties in the league deep, and two capable to good corners. Healthy, I agree that’s top five. It’s the offensive line that worries me. We are betting on a lot going right with Mahagony/Glasgow/Ratledge on the interior, and that’s not even accounting for Decker’s age. There may be games where we see Goff turtle so often we want to put a hole in the TV. Those games may happen with two guards who have nearly no collective NFL experience. Now if the OL is as good as last year, or even just a little bit worse, there is no reason we can’t make the Super Bowl. We could have last year before half the team fell off an injury cliff.1 point

Iirc, he was running on the pitch, presumably a hit and run, but the pitch was wild and bounced past the catcher so Tork cruised into 2nd.1 point

I was a little shocked he only hit Beasley for 20 corner three assists. I looked it up and the Pistons do not take a lot of corner threes. 717 total last year, and that ranked them 23rd in the league in attempts. Phoenix was 1st with just over 900 attempts. The top 10 is pretty wild. In order: Phoenix, Utah, Miami, Brooklyn, Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, Minnesota, Golden State, and San Antonio. 7 of those teams were irrelevant last year. Either missed the playoffs or lost in the play-in games. So maybe corner three attempts are not a good indicator of team success.1 point
