..and as far as I know we still have a right to disagree with the reasons and say so. I wouldn't be surprised if we soon won't have that right any more but for now we do. And anybody who thinks it's okay to randomly bust into buildings, bust down doors, and remove naked children from apartments in the middle of the night? That's a person who has no soul.3 points

I don’t think it’s fair or reasonable to go into this with a “win both Skubal starts and steal another” strategy. I won’t argue that it may be the most realistic path, but it’s exactly what they did (and what failed) last year with Cleveland. All went to plan until they got into game five and the Guardians finally got to Skubal. The man can’t possibly just strike out 14 and throw 7 shutout innings every start. Baseball isn’t a one-man game. If it was the Angels would have been fantastic the last 5-10 years. Go out and win game one, let Skubal do his thing Sunday, and win one at home. Skubal can start the ALCS.3 points

I would guess Sweeny is an injury backup. If Meadows gets hurt and Baez needs to move to CF or if Baez gets hurt, then Sweeny is the backup short stop. If no one is injured, I would guess we won't see Sweeny play.2 points

Sweeney’s action might depend upon McKinstry or Baez ending up on the OF. Maybe not likely, especially for Baez, but we’ll see. Something like Ibanez pinch hits for Carpenter, McKinstry goes out to RF, Sweeney is around if needed? Or could this be a case where he’s insurance if Keith aggravates his injury?2 points

I'm actually feeling pretty relaxed, at least we got to the ALDS and maybe have shaken off the season-ending slump. Imagine if the Tigers had had a normal finish (8-8 instead of 3-13) and got the #2 seed. They'd still be facing Seattle, there would be the concern of rust vs rest, Skubal would be burned in home games instead of giving us a good chance in road games, the Mariners would have the same fearsome lineup, etc. There'd be the risk that a very nice regular season would end in getting knocked out in the Tigers' first playoff round. Or imagine further that the Tigers had turned it on a bit at the finish (11-5 instead of 3-13) and got the #1 seed. They'd be facing the Yankees with its 8 or so hitters with 20+ home runs. The Tigers likely still would have been considered underdogs by most and there'd be the risk that a dream regular season as top team in the AL would end in getting knocked out in the Tigers' first playoff round.2 points

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more. Or close the wall up with our Tiger dead. In the regular season there's nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility But when the blast of playoffs blows in our ears Then imitate the action of the Tigers Stiffen the sinews..........SUMMON UP THE BLOOD Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage2 points

Mariners have never one a World Series either. Another good option (if the Tigers don't beat them). A Brewers/Mariners World Series could be fun.1 point

You don’t need a timeline. You just take a person’s phone, and if they have Bad Bunny on their Spotify, you deport them. It’s just that simple with the clown crew currently in charge. Oh, and never mind that the First Lady is of foreign descent.1 point

Odds are Malloy wouldn't have played especially since he can't play any position. Ibanez and Jones are ahead of him against LH pitching and I think the Mariners have a total of 1 LH.1 point

Legally yes. The issue goes back to the fact that the entire system is broken. If you are going to make some kind of explicitly legal exemption and *invite* people into the country, then the only reasonable, moral, (indeed, need we say "Christian"?), thing to do is give them a path to permanent residence/citizenship. But since the legislative process is broken and both the legislative and judicial branches have basically abdicated everything to the executive since neither for them have been able to produce sane function for 30 yrs, we get governance by executive fiat which is then subject to the whims of each administration because it has no permanent legal standing. Trump is a disgusting human being to whom no sane person would give custody of dog let alone the lives of 350 million people, but OTOH, what does a Democratic admin think is going to happen when they make policy by fiat themselves and leave hundreds of thousands of people's lives potentially in the hands of someone like Trump?1 point

yeah, and maybe some of it is Yzerman not sure of the team's defense and not wanting to expose Cossa too early.1 point

and the other half is the naturalization process. It's only been in relatively recent years that we have the phenomenon of people coming here and not entering the naturalization process, in the current situation of course because many don't have legal status to access the process. When there is a straightforward and widely used path to naturalization, which was traditionally true in the US, the distinction on birth/blood citizenship fades from significance.1 point

..especially since the powers that be keep on changing the rules, and suddenly removing legal status from those here legally or who are trying to do so. And if reports from Chicago are any indication, they're not particularly careful about establishing the status of people before busting down their doors at 3 am.1 point

I was watching a two hour long YouTube video exposing right wing podcaster Patrick Bet David as a con artist and a grifter, based on his company PHP Insurance. It got me thinking. Is the Trump movement and Donald Trump himself just apart of one giant multilevel marketing pyramid scheme? Is that all this grift is, just Amway or Mary Kay for politics? Someone please correct me if my thinking is wrong here. I don't think I am though.1 point

One of my FB acquaintances, who is 70, listened to Bad Bunny for the first time thanks to this news cycle.... she said she likes him now. I wonder if there are others checking him out-whether or not he ends up playing at the SB, the exposure right now might make him even bigger.1 point

Melton threw 16 inning in Sept with 10 BB and 11K, His ERA wasn't bad but those are bad peripherals.. IMO Montero pitched better than that, but he has thrown to 15 Mariners this season and given up a 1.042 OPS, so that's probably why we are seeing Melton. Not sure that is how I would judge it. You can have all the stats you want but some human is still deciding which ones to pay attention to based on his gut. I haven't seen all his outings so maybe it's just a skewed sample but I haven't been impressed with Melton. I suppose against a team that's had a few days off it might take once through the order to catch up to Melton's velo, and once through the order may be all they are looking for.1 point

The Guardians were 10.5 games better than the Tigers the final 2 1/2 weeks of the regular season and the Tigers sent them home for the season.1 point

Today's JVL....I'd be happy to get on this train. Make it so Dems I’d couch the ask this way: Recent events have proven that American citizens in the District are uniquely vulnerable to abuses of power by the federal government. Statehood is required to protect residents from a president who would turn the force of the military on them. Make D.C. a state and we will bail you out of your incompetence. Otherwise, pound sand. If that’s too militant for you, there are other potential compromises. Some ideas: A legislative end to “Kavanaugh stops.” Ending qualified immunity for federal law enforcement officers. Mandating that federal law enforcement officers cannot wear masks and must display identifying badges/markings at all times. Closing the “emergency” loopholes that the administration has claimed for everything from tariffs to acts of war. Removing the secretary of state’s discretionary power to revoke visas. Or my personal favorite: Release all of the Epstein files. That’s right. We’ll bail out Republican incompetence after you release the Epstein files. All of them. https://www.thebulwark.com/p/democrats-how-you-can-win-the-shutdown-fight-trump-newsom?utm_campaign=email-post&r=45wcm&utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email1 point

The Athletic makes its LDS predictions and the staff is unanimous in picking Seattle. Fine, I don't argue with Seattle being the favorite, especially after the Tigers' collapse. But the write-ups are a little over the top, IMO, as to how lopsided this is. Keep in mind, through 150 games this season, going into the final 2 weeks of the regular season, the Tigers had a better record than the Yankees and Dodgers and were 3 games ahead of Seattle. The Mariners won 90 games this year, the Tigers won 87. The Mariners scored 8 more runs in 2025 than the Tigers. The Tigers allowed 3 fewer runs in 2025 than the Mariners. Reminds me of Dan Dickerson's comments in 2006 after the Tigers eliminated the Yankees, saying if one were to listen to the media beforehand the 95-win Tigers team was the junior varsity going up against the unstoppable 97-win Yankees.1 point

I'd feel better knowing that the people who care about Charlie Kirk's death and rail against political violence now, did the same thing when State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered in their own home by a right-wing extremist. But that doesn't seem to be the case. There was largely crickets from the right back when Melissa Hortman was killed.1 point

“Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. They’re allowed to take only a knapsack and a little cash with them, and even then, they’re robbed of these possessions on the way. Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared. Women return from shopping to find their houses sealed, their families gone." Anne Frank wrote those words.1 point
