how did adding paddack and morton NOT make the team worse? what were the stats of the guys they replaced? and what were the stats of the guys they could have traded for but didnt? you'd have to know both of those. it appears harris has set up an organization that has done well in creating an environment to develop young players. that means a lot. in the long run, that will be more important than short term success in qualifying for the wild card two years in a row. but his trade deadline moves hurt the team. youre straining credulity by saying paddack and morton didnt hurt the overall results.2 points

Giving players credit and blame is generally something I am on board with.2 points

Scott Harris’s deadline moves were so bad last year that he caused them to lose 12 games in August. They won 16 games in August just to spite him.2 points
-
I would argue the Tigers achieved that in spite of Harris. He literally surrendered the rest of the season by selling. (Which I agreed with at the time). Let’s not turn that into something heroic.2 points

How about those '87 Jays, too? Losing seven straight to cough up the division. Best collapse of my lifetime.1 point

The Tigers were 20-16 immediately after the trade. That's a .556 winning pct, more than good enough to get us into the playoffs. Harris gets zero credit for that playoff-making-worthy performance. Then the team went into a 3-13 tailspin in the final 16 games with the exact same team. Harris gets 100% of the blame for that collapse that led to nothing more than a wild card bid and series win. Do I have that straight?1 point

I think the Tigers caught some pitch design lightning in a bottle in 2024 and the league caught up a bit in 2025. So when they added some flawed pitchers in hope of a fix, they ended up throwing meat because the league was ready.1 point

And not only that, but his Go Fund Me is up to $500,000. Best thing the guy ever yelled. 🤣🤣1 point

I was at the game. It was actually announced that they were chugging one beer for every free agent Scott Harris signed. They had two beers and that was it.1 point

I've got Western Pa roots (McKeesport and Westmoreland Co). The Steel Curtain was something in those days after years of horrible teams. My favorite story, Dec 30, 1978. My wife and I had the audacity to get married during the Steelers playoff game against Denver. The Pittsburgh contingent had timed the trip from the motel to the church, barely beating my spouse down the aisle. Then they used white shoe polish to put then final score on our car. Damn stuff never cleaned out1 point

yes. They went 9-18 in September, in addition to losing 4 of 5 to close out August. That's what makes these kinds of things so remarkable. I've always defended the 2009 Tigers a bit for their "collapse". MN went insane that year to end the year while The Tigers merely lost 4 of 5. They were 16-12 in September. THat's not a collapse. Its a mediocre baseball team.1 point

China or Russia won't "take over" Greenland as Trump claims. He's lying...again. Using "National Security" as a scare tactic. Just like he used that excuse for his horrible tarriffs or for his racist immigration crackdown. Every single thing him and his administration does is anti-American, as they use the constitution as toilet paper...1 point

Harris knew exactly what was going to happen in both cases. He thinks outside the box. He plays 3D chess. The rest of the league is playing checkers.1 point

It's all about the psychological mindset of fans. When a team does well in the beginning fans are conditioned to think "Well, this is the team. They're good. We have a good team. Yay!" Then when that team doesn't play so well they're "chokers". If they start off not playing well they're not a good team. Then they finish strong and they are "Gamers" and have "character" and are "clutch" and "scrappy". Reminds me of the Bill Burr bit about swearing and referring to race/nationality. Black people had the genius idea to put the curse word after the description. A white person says "I'm just sitting there eating and this ******** Asian walks in..." "Hey hey... take it easy... what's the matter with you??" A black person says "I'm just sitting there eating and this Asian ******* walks in...." "You don't even hear it... So many careers could have been saved if we'd just put the curse word after". So for mediocre teams that barely make the playoffs... win later, not before.1 point

I personally think the Twins collapse in 2024 was worse because they didn't make the playoffs. I'm with Shelton, that last year's collapse doesn't bother me as much because we made the playoffs and then beat the team that overtook us in the standings. (With a team Harris constructed)1 point

Do you realize that post is as much about Cleveland as it is Detroit? They surged more than the Tigers collapsed.1 point

I'll remember 2024 more than 2025. 2024 was the most unexpected and remarkable comeback I have ever seen and I hope it does not get forgotten. The 2025 collapse was really bad, but it's not as memorable because they still made the playoffs at the end.1 point

This is why we are in so much more trouble that just electing an malevolent man-child as president, we also voted hard for his enablers. Voters get what they deserve generally. Unfortunately that leaves the other 250 million to suffer the collateral damage.1 point

Seems like if his moves at a certain point in time caused the team to become worse, they would have become worse at that point in time. Maybe his moves kept them from being 12-16 in August instead. Maybe not every high variance set of results needs to have a distinct cause assigned.1 point

Optics. Like Gretchen Whitmer's need to salvage Selfridge (see that alliteration?) , it puts the local pol in the untenable posture of having to reach out to the monster to avoid being the next one it eats. I still think Ford should have politely declined the visit. And good on the local Ford employee who gave POTUS what he deserved.1 point

For his life up till now, WCF is the most greeny of all the major car people. IIRC he was the fist one to embrace Obama/Biden policies for carbon control and I think Ford was the only US builder not to oppose the last set of CAFE increases prior to Trump. From what I have gleaned locally, Ford's long term focus is still EV even if the Lightning was an overreach for the current state of play. Ford's manufacturing issues have them in a wounded state right now and you have to imagine they would most like not to be pulled into the political spotlight at all. Trump probably knows that full well and is trying to leverage it.1 point

Baseball feels uniquely situated to rarely provide satisfaction to a certain subset of fans. If you win 90 games, that’s basically going 9-7 over every 16 game stretch if you tried to flatten it out. Talk radio will call that basically .500. Never getting into a rhythm. If you get off to a quick start and get 18 games above .500 after two months, then play .500, talk radio will complain about being a .500 team since June 1. Why didn’t they do more at the deadline? Start off slow and then come back? They won in spite of management. Imagine how they good they could have been if they hadn’t thrown away the first two months.1 point

it IS more than that. the university's purpose - and the reason its granted non-profit, non-taxable status - is that it is a public good, paid for by the state, to educate its citizens and produce value for the state. that education and the fruits of it through research, development, and producing the next generation of talented americans is the reason it exists. not a football team. not a rock climbing wall. not a state of the art food court and gym. not a assistant to the assistant provost for student inclusion at the dental school. universities have lost their way in some many areas. the relentless pursuit of profit via the football team is just the most obvious example.1 point

Ohio resident, lifelong Steeler fan. Mostly due to living in rabid Browns country. I'm also old, and the early 70s Steelers kicking the snot out of the Browns was really sweet. They run a good organization best I can tell, and have for a long time. Since Chuck Noll in 1969, they have only had 3 head coaches. That's pretty impressive in and of itself.1 point

ND should be pushing Freeman out the door. It’s only a matter of time before he kills a kid. Freeman himself should want the Steelers. Perfect timing to leave ND since they are now the 2nd tier bitch program in state to IU. They can’t compete in NIL or on the field.1 point

It appears so. ESPN's baseball page has an off season progress report paragraph or two on each team. The Tigers' begins with "I'm not sure I get the passive Tigers." and ends with "The time is now, folks" 🐌1 point

It almost seems like after a team loses it's chance to challenge, all the close calls go against them. They can't do a thing about it.1 point
