That's one of the ironies. Trumps idiocy is going to do more than speed the adoption of non-hydrocarbon fuels both here and around the world than any monkey wrench he has thrown in attempting to prevent it. Whatever fever dreams Trump and Hegseth had been imagining, in reality, what they have accomplished so far would be the following: brought a leadership into power in Iran that is more radicalized than ever Left the Iranian people with a worse government and worse economic prospects than they had before. And poorer people do not make better revolutions. increased the risk to US citizens around the world to terrorism vastly weakened the US ability to deter China from attacking Taiwan Slammed his base in the Red US agricultural states again with dramatic increases in the price of fuel and fertilizer. Vastly increased Russia's oil income and thus its potential for mischief. Destroyed whatever semblance remained of a Western security alliance. Guaranteed that every rogue (and for that matter) non-rogue regime redoubles efforts to get into the nuclear club before Trump decides to start another war - this should do wonders for the Pakistani and possibly N. Korean balance of trade as customers line their pockets for nuclear tech. What do we learn, Palmer?2 points

I don’t see how they are related. Both can and should make the team. At this point, I don’t think they are concerned about how many AB’s Javy gets. He’ll still play a lot everywhere. If Javy and Vierling are largely bench/utility guys, do we really need Jones?2 points

I have two jerseys, a Cabrera road jersey with his name and number on it and an incredibly sturdy, beautiful, fully authentic Mud Hens road jersey that I got for $2 at a St. Vincent’s thrift store and it’s even got real embroidery. It’s so thick I could wear it in a snowstorm. Unfortunately, hardly anyone out here in Idaho knows who the Mud Hens are unless they remember Klinger from M*A*S*H.2 points

I saw this on the news and every time I think he can't sink any lower, he proves me wrong. What a disgusting individual he is, I can't wait to see that moron in prison, where he belongs. How are the Christians going to justify and excuse this behavior? Haven't they seen enough? And the midterms? This shows me they really do have plans to steal and rig any election. Every republican that was planning to run a fair race should be coming out against this pig.2 points

All he has to be is top 3 though to get the year service time. Last year’s AL winner wasn’t called up til June I believe? He didn’t hit/get on base near as well as McGonigle did, but they were already “burned “ with Skenes losing the pick and the service time. It seems foolish to me, especially in their situation if they think he will be up mid-year. If they plan to wait until August and keep his rookie status, it’s obviously a different story. (By then Rainer will pass him for #1 prospect in the game 🤪)1 point

It will be interesting to see how easy it will be for pitchers to get a guy out with a lot of breaking stuff who won't swing out of the strike zone. Even in the majors there aren't that many guys who can throw breaking stuff consistently in the zone.1 point

This is one of my bigger pet peeves with these Trumpers. They refuse to see their own hypocrisy. They flip flop to follow Trump's flip flops. They have no inherent philosophy except to own the libs and praise Diaper Don.1 point

Kevin McGonigle is a sign of how far the team has come in the last few years. We are discussing him making the team on OD as a kid, in the bad old days we would have been focused, at least a little, on the possibility that an Austin Slater, or Julks, would be a contributor.1 point
-
Ok so the argument against McGonigle making the team is he needs AB’s against off speed pitches but will he actually even see any good pitchers in AAA that can command those pitches?? I think he just has to go through the learning curve in the Majors to adjust and he has the swing, set up and mental strength to do so and the Tigers know this He will be in San Diego1 point

Ultimately, rich Democrats want the same thing rich Republicans want: lower taxes. And since many of the ones in power probably think they'll be unaffected by the worst of the current regime's policies, they're not all that concerned about anything else. They're just more likely to leave a few breadcrumbs for the rest of us.1 point

Oh yes, Rudy’s Hot Dog. Right next to the fire station museum. And the license bureau at that wacky intersection. Classic cafeteria style serving line in Rudy’s. And the glass case with pies and cakes in it. There might still be a few around town, definitely one in the Holland area. Regular hot dog on a bun with chili, mustard, and onion, please.1 point

I realize why people think Jones should make the roster. Top line stats from last year and pros wouldn’t sneak through waivers to Toledo. I just think last year was a mirage and I don’t know that I would put much stock in someone that’s a short side platoon DH. I suspect what will happen is Jones makes the team and Perez starts the season in Toledo. Not sure how McGonigle and Meadows shakes out. But I think there’s some degree of direct influence amongst a few different players’ assignments starting off the season. And I don’t think it’s necessarily an easy one player or the other. But I think the Jones decision isn’t a primary driver in how the roster is formed. I think he’s secondary to other Opening Day assignments. And how about this thought. Maybe they start the season with 12 pitchers and 14 position players. 3 game series in San Diego. Off day. 3 game series in Arizona. Off day. Then 10 games in a row, so certainly they’d be at 13 and 13 for that. But maybe the early season first week in warmer climates with likely no rain outs factors into a bit of a wrinkle with carrying another bat rather than an arm? Heck, they could probably swap arm for arm during that time if need be if they have options.1 point

I think the Tigers are way more concerned about 2026 than 2031/2032, and that the only calculation at this point is whether McGonigle is better than the alternatives.1 point

Not to detract from Guy Incognito's post above which should be the #1 story on all the Sunday shows... But Elon's AI is lying outright about his saying he was glad Mueller died. https://bsky.app/profile/artcandee.bsky.social/post/3mhmmhn6c322b1 point

Au contraire, for 70 million people, his tantrum act is the epitome of strength, mainly because they never learned what true strength looks like. Their emotional growth peaked in middle school.1 point

In the country's entire history, has there ever been a smaller, more venal man in public life? And for 70 million people that alone wasn't enough disqualification? We have a gotten to where we have a seriously retrograde social culture to fix in this country.1 point

I thought about how one random play in a Tiger game shaped the entire World Series that year. Let me take you back to a time when Disco was peaking. Saturday Night Fever was a cultural zeitgeist. Saturday Night Live was in it's third season. If you had plans for the weekend you needed to withdraw your money from the bank before it closed on Friday (or Saturday) because once you ran out, you ran out. We didn't have ATMs. All In The Family and the Mary Tyler Moore show were the biggest comedies. Fantasy Island was a big hit, for some reason. We had a President named Jimmy and the big scandal was that he admitted to having impure thoughts. 1978. The Tigers were an improving young team then. Alan and Lou in their rookie seasons. The Origian A-Rod played third. We still had hopes that The Bird would fly again. Ralph Houk at the helm. A man who looked 20 years older than his actual age. Sunday, July 2nd. Game 1 of a back-to-back double header. Tigers leading 2-0 in the 7th inning. Dave Rozema is pitching a good game. To that point he'd given up 6 hits, 4 singles and 2 doubles. Gary Tomasson is on first. Mickey Rivers is at the plate. Rivers hits a fly ball to deep RF. It is all the way to the wall. Tiger RF Mickey Stanley reaches to catch it (it did NOT have HR distance), when a fan, probably Jeffery Maier's older brother, reaches out and interfere's with it, knocking it to the corner. Instead of chasing after the ball, Stanley goes running towards the first base umpire, screaming about the fan interference. Meanwhile, Rivers, who is pretty fast, runs all the way around the bases for a 2-run "double, Adv on E9". Yankees tie the game and then win it on a sac fly in the bottom of the 8th. How did that (possibly) affect the World Series? If you remember, we had to have a one-game playoff to decide the AL East that year. Yes, the Bucky Dent Green Monster Game. Now, perhaps, the Yankees would have tied that game anyway, but there's also the chance Thomasson doesn't even score if Stanley just goes after the ball and there is also the chance that even if Thomasson did score, that Rozema (ERA 2.22) or Hiller (2.32 ERA) who did come into the game, strands Rivers at 2nd. If Stanley had just gone after the ball, there is no playoff game. The Red Sox win the division and the Yankees don't go to the World Series. I just remember my dad yelling "GO GET THE BALL, DUM-DUM, GO GET THE BALL" Just one of thousands of little moments that decide baseball games - but one that sticks in my head. I can't find video of the play.1 point
