i will disagree and say people are not scared enough. I understand fear paralyzes some people, but it is important to go down fighting and telling the truth. (see: Kamala Harris warning people that he would unleash the military on US citizens.) Trump was VERY VERY VERY CLOSE to stealing the 2020 election. If Mike Pence had derailed the Jan 6 count, it would have thrown the election to the House who would have elected Trump over Biden because of "the fraud". take seriously and literally MAGA when they say Trump should remain in the White House after Jan 20 2029. it's a stupid, stupid plan, but I can guarantee you, there is a plan. we are barely hanging on as a democracy. people need to understand that.4 points

Ahh, I took it as the guy mocking religion and laughing at the fact that MAGA didn't get pissed until Trump mocked Jesus with a picture, but mocking jesus with his actions over the years was fine. To me, I saw enough prior to 2016, but I'm still completely lost on how he maintained support after 1/6/21. But at this point, if it leaked he demanded his TP to be under vs over and that lost him more votes, I'm all for it.2 points

From 14 wins to 60 in two seasons - without getting a superstar - that's incredible. J.B. has to get coach of the year this year. Should have had it last year.2 points

I lack confidence in the American people to do the right thing when it really counts. They failed us in ‘16, ‘18, ‘22, and ‘24 despite all the handwringing from th Lincoln project and bulwark and podcasters. Remember when Graham and Cruz and Collins were going to lose? Dobbs was supposed to end the GOP. That’s ancient history. Yes it’s cute when an R district goes from +47 to + 18 or a Democrat wins dog catcher in Montana. Until the House and Senate flips and then the White House goes D I’m not getting excited. This country elected Trump again after ‘16 and Jan 6. It’s who we are. It wasn’t an outlier. We are at the mercy of idiots.2 points

Jan 6 happened. Trump is actively trying to nationalize the elections. I think we have ample reason to fear he will do illegal things to stay in power. I agree taking stock of our fears is counter productive sometimes but risk assessment both negative risk (the crap that can go wrong) and positive risk (the risk of what you give up if you do not act) must be assessed equally.2 points

It was being discussed in the World Politics thread because it applies more over there, but I do think we need to think a little bit about the rhetoric leading up to this campaign and all of the fears that people had (not unfounded fwiw) about what Orban would do if he lost, or how he would steal the election, or how they would throw out votes, you name it. The election came, Fidesz got their asses kicked, and Orban and went out there and whined and cried but, in the end, conceded. The fears, legitimate as they may have been, did not come to pass. To be clear, I know there are differences. The biggest one being that Orban is a rational actor and Trump is not..., but there's a lesson here in that we all have anxiety about what the President or Republicans in Congress will do in the event that they lose in the Midterms. We create wild scenarios in our heads. Some realistic, and some less so.... but that fear and anxiety does not help, it only paralyzes. That's what Peter Magyar and the Hungarian opposition taught us today. People need to stiffen their spines and be vigilant, but not constantly in fear and not treating Trump like he's a force of nature that can't be reckoned with. And that politics are over and do not matter (they clearly did in Hungary under a much more consolidated authoritarian system). And, as I've paraphrased Ulysses Grant many times saying, we all gotta stop worrying about what *they* are gonna do and start thinking more about what *we* are going to do.2 points

they've achieved the best run differential in the division as of today. I wonder if this year's Pitching Chaos innovation is going to be Anderson as a virtual split starter for either of Mize or Flaherty to get them out of games early before they self-immolate without burning 4/5 relievers to finish the game. I might like to see this become a thing - If Anderson holds up.2 points

Lets still make game threads for Pistons playoff games and use this for everything not related to Detroit. Eastern seeds are set. West still has a few more games to finish up tonight.1 point

If you want to keep calling not having power wining, go for it. They lost the House in 22, then lost the Senate in 24. Control of no parts of the government on Jan 2025 is zero momentum from the opportunity of having gotten Trump out of the presidency for 4 yrs.1 point

I don't trust the American public all that much either. But that doesn't mean they aren't pissed at the administration right now and that there aren't any options for Dem candidates to persuade some of them to vote for a Dem candidate, or to show up and vote at all. Or even simply to drive wedges into the GOP coalition such that it depresses their own turnout (which is a real risk for Trump right now, especially given how their turnout sucks when he's not actually on the ballot). But what happened in Hungary should give some hope and perhaps a roadmap for pushing back on these guys.1 point

Again, a lot of the same fears and anxieties in the lead up to what Orban would do to stay in power were filtered in the media and among a lot of American observers. The voters spoke and they did not happen. Just think we need to consider that when thinking about our own situation. I understand that January 6th happened and that Trump (unlike Orban) is not a rational person. But I see the thought that democracy is over or that politics do not matter at all often (including to an extent on this board when engaging), and regardless of what stupidity he or his party have up his sleeve, I don't believe either thing is true. Democracy is not over, people are engaged (10 million people showed up to the last No Kings protests, no matter how much it was downplayed by the media), and things are always changing. People are pissed at the cost of gasoline, the cost of housing, being stuck in a stupid and pointless war. People were pissed when the administration was instigating a terror campaign on the people Minneapolis (one, btw, that the people of Minneapolis beat back and defeated). And yes, I truly do think there are a lot of people pissed off at his attacks on democracy. Maybe that wasn't the case in 2024, but things change in politics. This administration is terrible, they will do countless bad things between now and November and now and 2028. But I wish more liberals or anti-Trump folks understood that being joyless or hopeless (or projecting joylessness and hopelessness) all of the time may be a good coping mechanism... but ultimately it does not make anything that may happen in the future any more or less likely. I speak to that as well having watched the Hungarian opposition build over the past couple of years as well.... they started from a much worse situation than we find ourselves in, but there was a lot less wallowing or "woe is me" going on. They did the work... we need to as well.1 point

I didn't see a 60 win season coming. Even with all the injuries, we just kept winning. The worse loss all season, IMO, was the loss to the Nets when they came back in the last few minutes. That stunk. But so many close game wins this season made it a very special year. 60 wins...1 point

The Hungary election result is huge. Everything the conservatives have been doing in the US was modeled after Hungary. It gives me hope that this right-wing authoritarian movement in the US can be not only defeated but crushed.1 point

My second hand Phil Gardner story. Part of my wife's job when we moved to Detroit was to manage the Tigers radio network. WXYT had won the contract after several years at WJR. My wife had a get aquatinted meeting with Phil and his wife shortly before the season started. She mentioned how I was a Pirate fan growing up and that our son was born approximately 9 months after the 1979 World Series. The kicker, he's our only child. His wife laughed, he turned an interesting shade of pink.1 point
