OMG! I have unhooked from the wicked hive mind of this crumbling civilization all morning, and I discover that JV is coming home. Being superstitious I think perhaps I should withdraw from the hive mind more often…

Wait, they're signing Scherzer too?    WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

Why stop now? Especially when we can pay these guys in 2040. (Suckers don't realize the end of the world is in 2035)

What I got for CBT Calculations. Still don't know the deferral schedule for JV and Valdez, but this assumes the entire deferral payments are in 2030 when both have been phrased to begin. The AAV's will go down from here.

Every time a player is put on the IL and a minor leaguer is called up, this number will go up. Fangraphs overshoots that effect a bit in their calculation. I calculate as they go.

Verlander is insurance for that.   I am sure they told him that he's not promised one of the five slots.  Or maybe - just maybe - the Tigers are going to a 6-man rotation at some point.

They aren't paying him 13 million to hang out in the bullpen and be a spot starter.

Paying him 13 million to drive more subscriptions and/or advertisers to their new broadcast outlet.

Nope.  13 million to be their #3 starter

Olson had labrum surgery on Feb 02 Done for the year and possibly forever

yeah, nice to see JV in the old English D again but I'd rather have a healthy Olson.

I agree, but it wasn't looking good for Olson even before we learned about the surgery today.

Is it safe to assume Verlander with be the #4 starter?  If so, he'd get the start in the Sunday night game of the Tigers first home series.  If he's #5, he won't get a home start for another week and a half when they play Miami.

Labrum used to be Sayonara for a pitcher but the surgical techniques get better every day so we can hope.

True, but shoulder injuries are the kiss of death for a pitcher.

Imagine a scenario of Verlander walking out of the bullpen at Comerica Park before the top of the  9th in a WS clinching game with the Tigers ahead 6-3.

This is like super cool. JV is the guy with the golden arm. He's back home where it all began. They have to give him the opening day start, they just do. He can clinch the WS down the road a few months later.

Home opener should be close to a sell out regardless of pitcher.  If JV pitches game 2 of the series,   the Tigers could start the season with 2 sold out games.
