Everyone seems to love Godzilla Minus One.  On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 97% from critics and 98% from fans.  Unfortunately for me, I put off seeing it Saturday to watch college football.  Now I find out most places only had it in theater for a week.  Bummer for me.

Meanwhile, back in the Monsterverse.  The new KvG trailer came out.

I had not heard about this, and i thought for the first 10 or 15 seconds I thought it might have been a joke trailer made out of the original movie done in action thriller style, which itself would be hilarious if they could pull it off.

I belong to a facebook group called Historic Film Locations where they post before/after shots.  There was one of the truck chase scene from the first movie.  I always thought it was gratiot but it turns out it was not only Grand River, but a portion I drive on a lot when I go to events at the stadiums or theaters.

This is on GR right as you exit off the lodge.  The Motor Casino would be right behind you on the right.  Up ahead is 75 and on the left would be the "District Detroit", er, I mean the parking lots.

The continuity is off though because where the truck ends up is off Michigan Ave and 30th street, just west of the Corktown area... so not really in the direction they are going at all.

Leave The World Behind on Netflix. Ugg. Terrible. Just an all around complete waste of time where they tried to create drama and it just failed. The camera angles and looping scenes became annoying. The script was robotic and Julia Roberts was just wooden. None of it was engaging or believable.

Ethan Hawke is just....so....bad and this mean tweet sums it up.

I like Ethan Hawke, but it sounds like the movie was terrible from the start,  good actors can't save a bad script or direction.

He's great in the Chet Baker biopic "Born To Be Blue"    Great in Training Day too.

Watched Maestro today.    It wasn't what I thought it would be.  I thought it would be about his music career more.   I liked it and was floored at how much they made Bradley Cooper look like Leonard Bernstein.     They did an amazing job of aging Carey Mulligan too.     They were both outstanding in the movie.      The R.E.M. song that name drops him makes a brief cameo too, LOL.

And I am avoiding Napoleon for the same reason: I had hoped it would be about his career.

That last one seems exactly like what a drag queen would say. 😉

The trailers for it just seem to have Joaquin staring into space like he's been medicated.   Very odd.    He's a strange choice to play that role.   Several filmmakers have considered this biopic but it never really gets done or done well.  Stanley Kubrick wanted to do a Napoleon movie for years but never settled on a script.      You know he really wasn't that short?  He was average height for his time at 5' 6", but so many cartoons drew him as being an angry little man that it kind of stuck with people.

I was excited when Phoenix got the Johnny Cash role in his approved movie... but the movie itself... I don't know.  It's fine but his performance in that stripped all the emotion from him.  He made him look like a serial killer.  Johnny had a gentleness to him in addition to the darkness when he was doped up.  It could just be his eyes.

I remember telling a friend "He was born to play that role".  I think I was wrong.

Napoleon is a tough cast because he had to have had a level of charisma that today's natural acting style doesn't favor in bankable leading men. He was sort of a Trump in his day - magnetic and with that total ability to pull off  shamelessness. It is hard to imagine Joaquin being believable as a guy with that ability to pull people into his wake (whereas he was the perfect fit for Commodus, who we knew never would have come to power by his own talents of power/persuasion). When I saw the trailer I tried to think of who I would have cast and didn't come up with anyone.

Oscar Noms are out:

My predictions, since you didn't ask:

Oppenheimer wins all the big ones.

Gladstone Best Actress

RDJ for Supporting Actor, but Gosling has a slim chance

Robbie Robertson gets one for Score

DeNiro is up for Supprting Actor too... imagine the stress of being the presenter and seeing the card say one of either Robert Downey Jr or Robert DeNiro.  Both roll off the tongue so welll and if you say "Name an actor that starts with Robert" you will pick one of those two... and the last name starts with D.  Could totally see myself mucking that up live in front of a a few hundred million people.  Just take a deep breath first.

Was the One Detroit building (that's next to the Book Tower) not built yet when the movie came out? For some reason I thought it was an older building and I guess it was built in the early 90s.

yeah that's the Ally building.  Went up in the 90's I believe.  The intent was to do 2 of them side by side.

I'll admit to hopping on board the hate train about the Roadhouse remake, but this actually looks pretty fun.

I hope they don't reuse the line "I used to ____ guys like you in prison" as if it's a nostalgic line because that had to be one of the dumbest lines ever in the history of cinema.
