  4. No way, don't you remember when he said he would have run in and stopped a school shooting? Would someone who is afraid of guns do that? C'mon man.

  5. So basically … what we’re telling our children is that, hey, you’re not safe at school, so we’re gonna teach you how to hide. What the fuck man… Is this the best we can do for our kids? This is the best we can do? How do you look at this and other incidents (which by the way they were 27 other SCHOOL shooting incidents so for this year. Can you comprehend how insane that sounds? 27 shooting incidents in school so far this year)….and not even have a dialogue?? We have to do something. God damn it…we have to do something.

  6. Rules change all the time. Like when Mitch McConnell refused to take up the nomination of Merrick Garland for a vote on the Supreme Court. The balance of the court and number of Justices on it has changed in the past too. Andrew Jackson added two Justices in 1837. FDR attempted to add up to 6 new Justices. There is no fundamental flaw in changing the balance of the court so it represents the opinion of the majority in this country. Tyranny of the minority opinion, as we have on issues like abortion, corporations as people, money in politics, gun safety reforms, is far more dangerous for our current situation than allowing the majority of this country to govern.

  7. this is a cannard. You are either a democracy or you are not. If you want to have a chamber that is more deliberative, give them single 10 yr terms, don't elect them non-democratically. Non-democratic election doesn't insulate them from political whims, it just makes them subject to the whims of a tiny minority - not helpful in any scheme. Tiny states should have tiny voices, they represent a tiny number of people. We call that 'democracy'

  8. Democrats need to go on a full frontal attack against Republicans and their radical view on guns. We need the kind of gory, graphic TV and social media/digital ads Republicans would run if 9/11 happened on Al Gores watch. Bodies of kids and grocery shoppers piling up. Democrats need to hammer this point home at every single campaign stop that Republicans don't care about your children or your personal safety when you're out doing everyday things like grocery shopping, going to the movies, at the mall, going to the beach, etc. They need to explain that the United States has more guns than any developed country on Earth and that it still hasn't made us safer. Savage the Republicans and put them on defense on this for once.

  9. Its because in our macho culture we still look at mental illness as a weakness and not a medical condition and then on the other end of the spectrum they treat that medical condition with loads of drugs that only mask the problem like pain killers. When I took opioids for my back for 18 months it allowed me to function, but it didn't make my back better. So many of these shooters, especially the younger ones, are completely numbed out on these drugs. There is a correlation between the sudden spike in the use of these drugs and the spike in shootings. I know before the pandemic that something like 93% of mass shooters under 40 were on these legal drugs.

  10. Unfortunately, as gruesome as it sounds, we need pictures, video, the injuries, the horror, the dead bodies of children, the gut wrenching wailing of the parents. It has to be shown non stop for days and days.

  12. Policy is all about dealing with things that are within your control. Guns, at least in theory, are things that can be regulated through policy. Unless there's some "Black Mirror"-style device out there that I dont know about, the human actions of 330+ million people cannot be legislated out of existence. In my state, the one where this event happened, they don't do deal with the things that are within their control (often rescinding regulations, in fact), while paying lip service to the things they can't.

  13. My gut tells me it doesn't move the needle in his favor at all, all the polls showing Texans not loving abortion or gun policy tend not to mean much when they step onto the voting booth. But I'm not sure that it matters either way.... there are a lot of people who are pissed and who do want answers down here. And it is really easy for GOP politicians to be insulated from criticism or dissent... the moral outrage totally fits the situation, and it is well earned, regardless of the politics.

  18. What leadership looks like. Systematically dismantling all the Republican talking points. In person, not on Twitter whining, not backing down, not being quiet, not allowing interruptions. Beautiful. Much, much more of this. I love how a few Supreme Court justices had their panties in a wad over some peaceful protesters at their homes, and boom, next day, congress acts. A few dozen kids get slaughtered, well... now isn't the time...

  29. I don't know what you mean by 'same.' Democracy is not giving pieces of land equal rights - it's giving people equal rights. Your vote in WY on national policy has no right to count 10 times as much a mine in MI. There is no justification in a democratic country for Wy and Ca to have the same number of reps at ANY government level. As Rob says, it's primarily an anachronism which has come down to us as the result of a lot of troubled history without any purpose in good government. In a proper 'Federal' system states exist to divide government function into more responsive units where optimum, not to disenfranchise voters in one state at the expense of those in another. If you are a US citizen, your vote toward US policies should count the same everywhere, or you really don't have a nation, you have something on the way to being broken.

  30. Wyoming has 576,000 people. California has 39.5 million people. California has 12% of the US population. Wyoming has 0.1% of the US population. Why does Wyoming deserve such a unequal representation? California should have 12% of the representation in senate. Hell, even a compromise of 10% for California and 1% for Wyoming. That would still be over representing Wyoming. No one can provide any good reason why Wyoming should have the same 2% representation in the senate as California.

  34. and excess hero worship of people who simply did the best they did to hammer a bunch of compromises to meet the conditions of the time is a factor that keeps us of blind to the fact that these were practical men, who if they looked at the loss of democratic character of this country would certainly be in the forefront of trying to do something about it. The truth is that the Civil War invalidated the major premise of the Founders that the US would be collection of states. The Civil War made this a single unitary nation, and the nature of the current world demands we remain one, but it's one left with a Constitution ill suited to the that changed reality. Constitutionally, the disconnect between the Founders' vision and the actual nation has been growing since 1865 and will only continue to get worse - especially if American's don't open their eyes to the fact that a modern nation that will not practice democracy is bound to descend into something much worse.

  35. So many assumptions failed for this team that was licking its chops to market to the fan base a bunch of players who have been total non-contributors. Imagine a team that had Grossman and Baddoo playing like 2021 with an Austin Meadows playing like a better Grossman hitting bombs and a Javy Baez who was catching everything hit his way and hitting for power with two cool new rookies including the best hitting prospect in a decade and a kid who was hitting everything in Spring Training. Then you add in the rapidly maturing Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal with the vet Eduardo Rodriguez. Tucker Barnhardt solidified everything because he was a hidden gem that Cinnci was willing to trade away for salary cap relief.

  37. If it were me I'd find a different sacrificial lamb than Brieske to make a couple of starts - maybe more BP days, or Peralta or Fulmer. Kid has potential but his off speed command just isn't there yet. Seems excessively cruel to keep beating the kid up in particular when you could be spreading the pain around more widely. It's not there is much need to preserve depth in the back of the BP when you don't have any save or hold situations for Chafin, Fulmer and Soto anyway. This is Hinch again feeling like he has to have all these levers to push on a machine that isn't even turned on.

  38. After Santa Fe in 2018 (almost four years to the week), Governor Abbott commissioned a report to give recommendations to the State Legislature of things that could be done to help prevent incidences such as these. That report, which included the introduction of a red flag law, which is a pretty basic mental health measure, went untouched for the most part. And since then, as mentioned previously, the state has actually gone further in deregulating firearms. Until I see action on something as simple as a red flag law, it's hard to take any of the calls about "mental health" seriously... instead of the fact that they obviously are a way to kill media newscycle time so nothing changes.
