  1. The J6 hearing has been great for anothe reason somewhat related to that decision. It's a very important thing with no silliness coming from the members. No grandstanding. No silly gotcha questions. No preening for the camera. No monologues disguised as questions. Just a serious inquiry like Congress used to be at times.

  2. This hearing was the first time I ever heard Marjorie Taylor Greene's voice. It was just as blood curdling as I imagined.

  3. I can think of three reasons why someone in NY or in the entire USA would feel the need to be carry a firearm to protect themselves. 1. antifa 2. black lives matter 3. liberals All three support violence on people that don't agree with them and or have different beliefs and values. We've seen it many times over where violence breaks out against Republicans and conservatives. Look at how these groups went off the deep end when they saw someone wearing a red hat or shirt. At the very least they tried to get people kicked out of restaurants and not served at other business. Maxine Waters is on record publicly calling for this.

  5. The early 90s was actually a fun team with Tettleton, Phillips and Fielder leading a strong offense. Starting in '94, their pitching was so bad, that they were just hopeless. They also had no minor league system and drafted horribly. As bad as it is now, I think they are in better shape now than they were thern.

  6. there is probably no level of defensive contribution enough to make up for an OPS+ in the 50s or 60s. You can't just give away 11% of your team PAs before the game even starts.

  10. as I listen to the testimony of these guys mobilizing DOJ to oppose Trump, I'm struck that this is *exactly* what Robert Bork did not do to defend the DOJ from Nixon. Or for that matter Richardson and Ruckelshaus didn't attempt to do it either before they got canned either.

  11. Yep, the Ukraine playbook. The investigation doesn't matter at all, just the announcement of an investigation.

  12. This part reminded me how important it would have been just to set a very pubic, highly-publicized election investigation in motion, for the explicit purpose of lending legitimacy to the entire conspiracy story, regardless of how the investigation would have come out.

  17. I can't remember where I got this, but within the past week I saw or heard some opinion that Adam Schiff should not be involved in the Jan 6 hearings because he would be polarizing, or something along those lines. Maybe it was someone saying they thought Schiff would not participate for that reason. I can't remember which. Of course, the only people polarizing Schiff are the right wingers who are trying to marginalize him to shut him down. Right wingers are afraid of Adam Schiff because he is a sober, serious person who knows what he is actually doing, and not a partisan clown. I don't know anyone outside of MAGAland who clutches their pearls over the prospect of Adam Schiff representing the Democrats. I hope Adam Schiff becomes the congressional party leader when Nancy leaves. I could even support the guy for president.

  18. I cancelled my Athletic sub because they could never remember who I was. I always had to log back in again. I would literally have the app open, logged in, then click on a tweet, it would take me not to the app but to a webpage to login.... I'd login, then it would take me to the main page and not the article I clicked on. They make it too hard to use their product and the price is beyond the point I can just ignore it.

  19. I didn't get any of that from watching Schiff. I thought he managed the questioning rigorously, thoughtfully, and with the proper degree of decorum. If you're going to insist he went off on a five-minute grandstanding rant, I'm going to ask you to produce a clip of it, because I don't remember anything like that.

  21. trading him before '17 would have been bad for marketing and ticket sales. How can you have a slogan when you trade your best hitter and one of hte most popular players? The Tigers org caters to the casual fan who is about 18 months behind on who is good and who isn't. The kind who thinks James McCann is a "kid" who deserves time to season and get better but Nick Castellanos is a washed up bust when in fact JM was 2 years older.

  27. I think it's an important part of it. I think inflation is high largely because demand is high and supply has some problems. So many people think that presidents control the economy. They don't.

  28. People live in the here and the now... and while the here and the now sucks, it's just not as bad as the Randy Smith era. That said, they need to replace the GM.

  29. Barnhart's career year was 3.6 in 2017. It really was a career year as he has never come close to that again. However, I feel like catcher WAR is not very meaningful as catchers typically don't hit much and catcher defensive statistics are not very useful. Anyway, if he had a .685 OPS this year, we wouldn't be having this discussion. We'd be blaming other players.

  31. The return was below expectations, particularly when we heard Portland was interested and we started pipe dreaming about getting the 8th pick but it's hard to say if it was weak in general. I mean we've been saying all year how we don't want Grant, how we play better without him and how just the thought of resigning him sent chills up everybody's spine. Now we expect teams to give up any real value for that player? If you were a GM of another team what would you have given for 1 year of control of him and the possible rights to give him a massive extension?

  32. If they renounce everyone and actually go with that $56M in cap space number. They could do both with some maneuvering. First year for Ayton at the max on a $122M salary cap is $30M. So you are down to $26M which is inside the 25% window of Haywards $30M, but probably not after the Pistons draft someone #5. So you would have to throw in some salary filler to Charlotte. But their entire reason to move Hayward is to open up cap space, so they probably don't want salary back. Or maybe sending out $30M and getting about $5M back is fine with them.

  34. to be positive, the pistons need a shot blocking big, preferably one who can roll to the basket and even shoot a mid range jumper. that's ayton. he's young. he should improve and be a fit in that respect next to cade. we saw bagley improve offensively when next to cade, but bagley plays zero defense and ayton plays some. to be negative, big fives are growing obsolete, especially in the playoffs when teams go five out. only centers who can move laterally (like williams for boston or looney for golden state) or guys who are deadeye three ball shooters like horford or unicorns like embiid can stay on the floor in today's small ball shooting age. ayton was a non factor when dallas went small. also, there are lots of rumors about him being lazy and more concerned with his ability to score in nba2k than in the actual nba. for the pistons, he would be an upgrade on stew, but at a big cost in dollars and potentially assets, as he is a restricted free agent and phoenix could match the piatons offer or extort players and/or picks from detroit.

  37. Which reports? Like 90% of the mocks have them taking Murray with a few on Mathurin. I know that a lot of folks here really like Murray but I'm very underwhelmed by him, he's a #3 option at BEST if he reaches his max potential IMO and is more likely a role player that will never be as good as Grant even.

  38. Wood fetched pick 26 and Houston had to take on salary in doing so. we got pick 36, took on no salary and got a future 1st and 2nd as well. Granted those last 2 picks are down the road but I think this was better than what Houston got for Wood.

  39. No I'm glad AJ is pushing him up there. I'd rather he get acclimated to where he should be in the lineup - and I think AJ should be doing the same thing with Tork like, right now - and go through his ups and downs. Especially this year. Here's your spot... figure it out.

  41. rosenthal on Avila. "Avila concluded by saying, “We’re all obviously working hard to turn this around. And we will.” Rival executives, however, question whether Avila is creative and savvy enough to build a consistent winner.... But with Báez, the Tigers banked on a hitter notorious for his lack of plate discipline. With Rodríguez, they bet on a pitcher who never had led a rotation. And while hitters such as Jonathan Schoop, Jeimer Candelario and Robbie Grossman inexplicably have cratered, the Tigers also are haunted by past blunders. Among them: • Meager returns in trades for Justin Verlander, Nick Castellanos and J.D. Martinez, compounded by failures to move pitchers such as Michael Fulmer and Matthew Boyd when their values were highest. • A drought of homegrown position players that predates Avila’s hiring as GM in Aug. 2015, but might be on the verge of ending with the arrivals of two top-five picks, first baseman Spencer Torkelson and center fielder Riley Greene. • An international program that, while showing signs of improvement, has produced only one positive WAR player, closer Gregory Soto, since the trade of Willy Adames in 2014." alright, which one of you has been talking to rosenthal? chas? while he criticizes Al, he's actually too nice to him for my liking. go for the juggular Kenny!
