  1. so Baltimore sells high on a guy having a career year, who may never be this good again. that's how its done Al.

  2. that doesn't work by the way.... I saw a thing on it "don't put too man onions" "I didn't put too many onions Paul... just 3 small onions" "Aw you gotta have the pork... that's the flavor" Part of me thinks Scorsese just put a bunch of old Italians in the room and told them to cook and set up his cameras and filmed.

  6. If I watch ten Tigers games and you watch just one, who is more likely to see at least one Tigers victory?

  7. Al really is in a no-win situation. One that he put himself in.

  8. It's probably more important to have a "proven closer" with the right mentality than a bunch of prospects at far more valuable and difficult to fill positions. When you're a team with like five good relievers and limited talent everywhere else, you make the smart play: build through the part of the team that is only useful if the other (terrible) parts won the first six innings. Whoa, I think I briefly used latent psychic powers to channel Al Avila's id for a moment there. Seriously, they basically have to trade at least a couple of them, and the longer it takes the more concerned I become.

  9. As we all know, he used a razor and he used to slice the garlic so thin that it would liquefy in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system

  11. Interesting little nugget there. Look, the fact that Avila got anything for Grossman is a minor win. Maybe the kid needs another organization to figure things out, maybe he never becomes anything anyway. Whichever way it ends up, trading away 2+ months of 2022 Grossman for a random minor leaguer is fine.

  12. word order in English is important. Skubal really came to the dugout after the screw-up at 2b and said "I'm tired of this shit". Hinch thought he said, "Shit, I'm tired", and took him out.

  19. That’s why I don’t think the Tigers were playoff underachievers. 5 appearances between 2006-2014 yielded 4 trips to the ALCS and 2 pennants. That’s probably more than we could have expected, especially without home field advantage any of those years and only in 2006 did they have close to the best record in baseball.

  20. I've designed this handy imaginary diagram for two competing situations. In scenario one, the Tigers utterly sell out and boost their chances one season, but never again make the playoffs, in the other they make it every season but are not a favorite. Scenario one: 1/8+0+0+0+0+0+0+0+0+0 Scenario two: 1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12+1/12 What I've decided is fractions suck and I'm a fool for not using decimals for this. Feel free to mock me, I deserve it.

  21. Better to keep players and get nothing in return than have Al trade away players and get nothing in return.

  22. That is his reputation. They wait till the last minute and settle for scraps. We know Chris is a mark at this point. I would hope he has a friend who can tell him how underwater this organization is.

  24. Well I do think it showed us something. Saul/Gene had two opportunities we know of to not go hard. The Walt/Jesse scene was there so that Mike could come in and tell him about Walter and that he should just forget about him. He's dangerous. Saul ignored him. In the "present" he was told to not go after the cancer guy at the bar and he was given the choice again and he ignored it. If Saul took Mike's advice how different would have things played out for everyone in the show?

  27. I believe the science. But I think the real culprits in the zipper merge are not the people who drive up to the end. It's the people in the other lanes who keep switching because "That one's moving". Then that lane stops and the other starts moving and then they move back. Just stay where you are and it'll work itself out and nobody really gains anything. But that goes back to my point earlier where people are impatient and so afraid that someone else might "get there first".

  28. Zipper merge. I love those debates because a lot of people have their heels dug in.

  29. Yep, Anglin is the classic "lottery ticket" type player. And Grossman was a player who the Tigers were lucky they didn't have to DFA. I know we have the precede all discussions with a "five minutes hate" about Avila around here, but in general, don't have much to complain about in just getting someone for Grossman

  30. I find it odd that they DFA Derek Hill the same day they trade Robbie Grossman. Does that mean Kerry Carpenter is going onto the roster?

  31. If there were some way it was actually conceivable to build build a 90+ win team and then tweak it in any such manner that would materially change its probability of winning the WS it wouldn't be, but there isn't.
