That's one thing I miss being in the office. I could just blurt out "Hey Terry, why did you send it to everyone when you thought it was my **** up but then just reply to me when it was yours?"2 points

Nah, they just created this month so the alt-right insiders in government would stop leaking actual intelligence to the Russians and instead focus on leaking the menus of the cafeterias offering Pride month food to government employees. edit: I subsequently realize these things are not mutually exclusive2 points

IDK - I might rather have one or two guys completely outclassing their MiLB competition than have 8 guys batting 280 there because probably none of those 8 guys will ever make an impact in the Majors but that one guy might.2 points

They are mad at Target and I just saw something about Chik Fil A as well. I hope more and more companies do this so that eventually they are stuck making their own clothes and growing their own food.2 points

Just looked it up..... he's a Scientologist. Forget what I said. He was into it. I didn't realize he Bill Cosby'd them. I use that term because I just got back from Aruba. In the swim up pool bar they had tables to put your drink on. A guy left his drink there, came back, and when he asked me if that was his, I confirmed, then he said "You didn't Bill Cosby it, did you?" And it's funnier when a black guy says it.2 points

If Monty Williams during his press conference doesn't promise this team will bite off body parts, the Pistons paid too much.2 points

Some had him as the top available coach on the market and the Pistons went and got him so even though it's a lot of money I don't see how this can be viewed as a bad thing. It may turn out that way but I love the fact that they didn't just take the cheap route or settle for an inferior candidate, they knew that there were more attractive options out there than the Pistons opening so if they wanted to get the best guy they could they had to pony up the money and to Gores' credit he did.2 points

Wow. Their .577 winning percentage in May was their best month in 7 years. That’s unbelievable. That’s like a good month. Nothing special. 4 games over .500. And it’s the best they’ve had in SEVEN years. I’m actually stunned by that.2 points

Random Thoughts/observations from my 6 days in Aruba: What's the deal with Cologne being such a thing in Duty Free shops? In Aruba there are no traffic signals. Just roundabouts. It worked fine. It's not a big island and traffic wasn't bad anyway. No real big cities there. Customs going down was interesting and easy. You fill out a form online, get emailed a QR code. A lady asks us to scan our passport into a machine, it does its thing, then the gate lets you through, one by one. We picked up our luggage, make our way through some doors, walked past two guys in uniform sitting at and on a desk talking to each other, not really interested in us, we went through some doors expecting more lines.... and we're outside. That was it. Coming back was different. You check your bags with your airline, go through Aruba clearance and customs again, then enter a US thing where they check your boarding pass again, you pick up your luggage that you already gave the airline, then go through US Customs Process (They have a thing there which is great), put your luggage back on the proper conveyor for your airline, go through another TSA check, then you are free to board. I liked being able to clear US customs in Aruba because then landing in the US is like a domestic flight. We had a connection so otherwise we'd have had to get our luggage and clear customs, then check it again. I wonder how many other countries are like that, where the US has a CBP presence at the airport you depart from. Aruba's temps are consistently high 90 and low 75 but there's a constant 15-20 MPH wind which makes it awesome. Didn't feel hot at all. I would go back in a heart beat. We met a couple that's on their 26th consecutive annual trip there, outside of 2020. The resort we were at was their favorite so that was a comfort. We loved our place. Had 5 restaurants of different varieties and buffets for lunch and dinner options.1 point

they did mess around a long time with Cade. I sort of thought when they announced surgery for him it was going to transpire that the diagnosis had changed to 'compartment syndrome' for which surgery is more common, and which is not always easy to tell apart - but the team press releases continued to say stress fractures. Maybe it was just healing too slow for their liking because it's more common to just leave that alone to heal by itself - esp since he wasn't going to be try and come back until next season anyway. Or maybe in folks that tall it needs more stabilization....1 point

GQP is so stupid; they constantly lower expectations for Biden, who then exceeds them easily. Biden is the centrist that everyone claims they want. Biden is the competent politician that everyone claims they want. BTW, the GQP's attempt to cut food stamps, will lead to more people getting food stamps.1 point

Agreed 100%. I chose to send my kids to Christian private schools. In that same token I would expect public schools to exclude any religous teachings or ideas. LGBTQ is a whole seperate issue and should be accommodated in the public school sector. New twist now in states like Indiana that now have school choice scholarships (vouchers). Now that religous schools are accepting public funding I expect some change. How does the old saying go? You let a camel stick its head into the tent, pretty soon the camel lives in the tent or something like that.1 point

Fascinating Fresh Air episode from the other day talking to the guy who make the new Frontline doc about Clarence Thomas. He spent a lot of time talking about Thomas's upbringing. It was fascinating. Clarence Thomas was born in Pinpoint, GA (seriously!) in the Jim Crow south as a coastal geechee, born Catholic, abandoned by his father, rejected by his grandfather, cast off to live alone and make his own way before he was an adult, went to seminary for high school and then Holy Cross on a scholarship, was never accepted by the overwhelmingly white student body at either, the latter because he was part of the first black class borne of affirmative action. While he was at Holy Cross he joined the Black Panthers, grew out his hair, went to protests and whatnot. One day he had some sort of epiphany: why am I doing this? I might get arrested! So he quit that. After getting his JD from Yale he did not get offers of high-paying law firm gigs so he decided to try to get into government, and he chose to work for Republicans because "the line was shorter" for black people to rise up in those ranks. He knew nothing of conservative ideology so he contacted John Bolton, who had been a classmate of his, and asked him to recommend books he should read on conservative topics. By the time he joined the Reagan administration, the Republicans were only too happy to hire any black person who would be willing to step out in front of the media and defend their racialized policies, and Thomas was only too glad to do so. He eventually became chairman of the EEOC (with Anita Hill on his staff) and stayed there until nominated to the Circuit Court of Appeals by Bush Sr and, eventually, became the affirmative action appointee to the Supreme Court, of which he has always resented the implication, which might explain why he is so anti-affirmative action. So now that I've capsulized his story, I want to share the big insight I got from listening to this program: Clarence Thomas had no ideology growing up into adulthood. He was neither liberal nor conservative. He joined an extreme black organization because he felt he had to; he then went to work for extreme right wingers because it was a good career move. He had no problem going from extreme left to extreme right. The only thing they had in common is that they were extreme, kind of like the Bernie Bros from 2016 who turned around and voted for Trump in 2020. Some people just want to do things to the extreme because it makes them feel alive. I think that's Clarence Thomas. He had a ****ty childhood that made him feel dead inside. Once he got agency he busted out and chose extreme paths in all directions. Didn't matter what side of the spectrum the extremeness was. Just that it was extreme. I've learned a lot about Clarence Thomas just from this Fresh Air. I might watch the Frontline on it, too.1 point

I do like Hazy. My best (worst?) experience at an all-inclusive was discovering Brugal XV on ice. Mrs. HighOPS tips above local conventions and so my glass never emptied. Amusingly at one pool I was ordering it as Brugal Quince and the bartender served it. A couple days later at the other pool I tried to order it and both bartenders looked confused. I guess it is really named after the letters (approx "Brugal Eckay Bay"). We had a good laugh.1 point

On the 1st throw you note, if the receiver had been Baez, Akil would have had the assist. He has been making some better throws recently.1 point

I have a loose fibula on which I've been running for 20 years. Just rub some dirt on it.1 point

The Baseball Prospectus Injury Ledger seemed to show about 4-6 weeks for a fibula stress fracture, but there's a large variance. https://www.sportsmedtoday.com/fibular-stress-fractures-va-214.htm Good info in the link above. The key is rest, otherwise you run the risk of recurrance, so while the injury is likely minor, shutting it down for a week or two and being conservative on the rehab is likely prudent. Kinda similar in that regard in a lot of ways to E-Rod's injury.1 point

I'm just glad it wasn't Ollie. The parting from UConn just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it shouldn't matter and I'm overly critical of it. This hire needed to be a developmental hire. This is the NBA and coaching seats get turned over quickly, even for winning teams. The fact that the Pistons hired a coach with the record of Williams' seems fortunate, but I'm not smart enough to know if this will translate to what the Pistons really need at this time. It is entirely possible that this nucleus of youth will need to different coaches to reach the Finals (should we be so lucky to see it). One to develop them into championship talented pieces, another to cohesively weave those pieces together. Hopefully Williams can do both. But, again, this is the NBA we're talking about. The contract terms seem expensive, but as has been mentioned, it ain't my money, and it doesn't count against the cap. So Williams is step one, but who will comprise his coaching staff? That's probably equally important to all of this.1 point

I'm not as panicked about Trump winning in 2024 as I was in 2020. Until then, it had not been proven that people in normal America were rejecting his entire schtick. He has only gotten worse. But, the third way nonsense has to be fought off with a vengeance. It will lead to tyranny.1 point

Have to give Gores a lot of credit here. He's doing what it takes to lure in the best available coaching candidate. You have to give him an A for effort and I'm far from a Gores fan. I'd be interested to see how this influences the draft and free agency now. I'd have to think that guys like Walker and Hendricks are more in play now at 5, guys with high floors that have defensive versatility that can hit 3's and seem to fit into that team/ball movement concept while Whitmore and the Thompsons seem like more of a longshot but just a guess on my part. This also might make Detroit a somewhat more attractive free agent destination simply because Monty has some cache around the league, I wonder if Cam Johnson is now on their radar.1 point

M43 or any Old Nation IPA. I obviously think society works better without the recent revisions on first amendment law by justices reflecting the values of those who appointed them. I would argue that my example is the opposite of extreme compared to allowing bias in the public sector We know from recent history that allowing private citizens to discriminate in the public sector is problematic and I'm shocked we are returning to it. I'd also argue that my example is less of a strawman argument than the reference to free speech. No one said someone can't protest to the board. But, clearly religious groups are behind most attempts to restrict LGBTQ focused materials in schools.1 point

Were you workshopping Slo Joe and Beijing Biden? Neither has that Little Marco or Low Energy Jeb vibe. They don't have that direct, simple attack on traditional masculinity the MAGA faithful need. You still have another year and a half though. You can do it.1 point

If anything... There will be depletion of Trump's aging and dying (sorry to be impolitic) supporters and a new 4-year addition of young voters who are extremely (90% rate I believe it is) anti-Trump. And of conservative voters who he got in 2020 but can NOT stomach Jan 6th (however great or few that those voters are...). He is not gaining voters, he is losing them.1 point

And just as an evidentiary note, if the 81 million that voted for Biden had still been energized in 2022, McCarthy would still be minority leader.1 point
-
because from the public side, people responsible for shutting down the play were acting out their religious preferences in the public sphere. In the video accompanying the story you do get the clip of the opposing speaker invoking her Bible at the board meeting and talking about evil sins. It's naive to argue that opposition to public LGBT expression in the US is not primarliy religously based, even if public authority figures avoid being explcit themselves or use alternate rationalizations in bowing to those constituencies.1 point
-
Don't buy it. The whole context was that entitlements were off the table in the current negotiation because they were "mandated" -- which was the word McCarthy did use. The 'mandates' are exactly Medicare/Medicaid and SSI so maybe his verbal taxonomy didn't say the words by species but he specified the genus clearly enough.1 point

Yes - for a couple of resasons. Baddoo has had such a tortuous development path that he still doesn't have enough history to make much in the way of hard judgments about it - i.e. he is still under 200 career AB against LHP. The other is that in his limited time playing semi-often against LHP in 21 he did walk a decent clip (~10%) and if a guy can manage the zone from that could be hint you might have something to work with, while in his weird truncated '22 his platoon split was actually negative - granted mostly because he wasn't hitting RHP either, but if a guy can get better against one, that certainly leaves the door open that he might against the other. Lastly -- if you look at his heat maps there isn't much inside/outside bias - in fact if anything he's a little better against the pitch away, so that's another hint he might have something to work with. So yeah - it's an investment I would make.1 point

fair point, although I can believe someone who had dealt with Chicago might hold out hope that Det would be a lot easier to get in out of than there. I just remember that during a stretch where I was doing a lot of job traveling that in the end, you are either home or you are not, in an era of air travel and electronic communication - distance - at least within the four time zones of the continental US - is pretty immaterial. The physical distance between A and B doesn't add much of anything to the psychological distance and is only even a minor part of the effort to travel between them, it's all the other stuff.1 point
