I find it easier to believe that Rodriguez changed his mind than Scott Harris is an idiot5 points

The response to this non trade has been remarkable and reveals the worst about instant news and discussion points. Fans were ready to talk about the trade, it didn't happen, now they are pissed because they couldn't talk about it.4 points

IDK, Lynn Henning literally invented the AJ Hinch opt-out of thin-air.... knowing that information, it boggles my mind that any fan would "engage" there, yet many still do.3 points
-
The more I think about that Henning tweeet I believe it. That’s his way of backtracking his initial criticism once he got more info. I do believe Harris had an agreement from Eduardo then he reneged. Harris won’t admit that because he won’t publicly bash his player so his comments are guarded.3 points

us: it was such a bad idea to trade jd martinez for the poo poo platter. also us: how could we not trade erod for whatever waa being offered?3 points
-
Seriously? His detachment is Henning's critique? What could be less relevant? I couldn't give a rat's asz about the GM's emotional involvement if he puts a winning team on the field. Does he think Dombrowski wasn't 'clinical'? i'll take a cold blooded executioner in that job more than a fan any day of the week and twice on Sunday.3 points

I think it's a power move by Harris. He showed the other teams that in the future when he makes a demand he means it. Doesn't help us right now, but it probably does in the future. Teams will know he means it. I'd rather have this than Al Avila panicking and settling for garbage - and the other teams knowing they can play him.3 points

I'll feel better if I know that Harris hates himself for what happened. And feels great shame.2 points

and if a little less means the level of crap then why bother? Truth is we simply don't know the teams or the players involved so it's all bull**** speculation.2 points

As I said earlier.... there's risks with ERod. The opt out, both taking it and not taking it. You could get a rental. You could get stuck with junk. The fact he left last year for whatever reason. Fans seem to think those risks meant he needed to be moved especially since this year is presumed lost. Fair enough. But those are risks other teams know and would have to assume. Therefore his value is affected. So do you just dump him for a random minor leaguer with little hope? I can't see a team willing to move much to get him for those reasons alone. I said all along Harris didn't have to make trades just to make trades. This isn't 2017. There's no crime in keeping a solid player for the fans this year who already bought tickets.2 points

Well, here is how I look at it. It stinks that the Tigers couldn't make a deal. I don't think we know enough to accurately assign blame to anyone in particular. We can make all of the assumptions and generalizations that we want to, some of which can be pretty plausible, but we won't know enough of the story to determine how bad some of the actors were.2 points

Speaking from my experience as an employee, I'd rather my supervisor not ask something like that, tbh.2 points

If you have a free 90 minutes, the latest Inside The Den on YouTube is out and it’s unreal. Amazing insight on the picks and how the team viewed them. Great work from the Lions media team. Spoiler: They viewed this as a weak draft. They only had 14 players with first round grades and they ended up with 4 of them.2 points

I'm a long game guy...if yesterday is an aberration..over the long haul it won't mean anything. If it's a sign of things to come...that' a problem. The JD Martinez trade didn't kill us...all of the other deals that were as bad...worse..or never completed did1 point

Have any family on the Left coast? For me it's not the travel - it's the time zone difference. It's never convenient on both sides to talk. Texting solves some of that, but some people prefer live contact.1 point

I think the problem is, other teams were likely aware that a deal was close with LA, and they had all moved on at that late juncture. They couldn't wait around just in case the deal fell through.1 point
-
No, I don't think that. I was questioning MTU's statement that he shouldn't make a move that would make him look weak in future negotiations. My feeling is he shouldn't make moves based on whatever GMs think of him.1 point

Don’t forget that key parts of the insurrection gang made it very difficult to get evidence or testimony. Meadows and others refusing to testify, deleting phones, etc. The indictment is for conspiracy, and conspirators tend to cover their tracks. We are still finding new info about the crimes. I would have wanted much swifter action too, but understand why that was difficult and hope the extra time makes the case both stronger and more complete.1 point

That said, Eduardo's underlying metrics in his four July starts were pretty decent considering the 5.66 ERA (i.e., 10.5 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, 3.23 FIP, 77 FIP-). If he keeps that up for the rest of the year, especially if he turns around his bad luck (.321 BABIP, 58% LOB), there is a good chance he opts out, and honestly, if that happens, I'm rooting for him to go, because I don't want to see the Tigers give him another five or six years guaranteed mainly to justify not being able to move him. Then Jeff Seidel can filet Harris for that.1 point

The first big test line is stupid, but I think it's fair to say that the failure to get anything for Rodriguez is on him regardless of circumstances.1 point
-
To put it another way, the target audience should make them wear it, in terms of future engagement, when they report stuff that isn't accurate. I know it isn't their responsibility to worry about the teams or discussions smooth or whatever.... but as a fan, it stands to reason that reporters reporting stuff that isn't accurate, or engaging in innuendo, should probably lead to criticism of said reporters. Or maybe questioning their wisdom in the future when they report or tweet.1 point

We are talking about it now, though, and isn’t this fun? We’re having a good time, aren’t we? Are we not entertained? I’m being serious here.1 point

Like clockwork they attack the judge as if there's some rule or law that Republicans only get Republican judges or it's unfair. Cry less and buckle up bitches.1 point

Easy on the writers. Some of them have noted the draft compensation should Rodriguez decide to opt out.1 point

Which gets to the fact that "other options" aren't contractually obligated to remain "other options" and are free to pivot to different trade pieces as well. In the Tigers case, I think the market for JV may have been a factor too... his deal was a major logjam to getting something done, but it took a lot of time (almost 24 hours, I believe) to get that resolved. Once it did and the Dodgers were lined up, there wasn't a lot of room for error for getting it done from a time perspective.1 point
-
If there were deals lined up but the return was below what they felt he should fetch, should they have completed it? I can tell you that I could see a world where Harris trades ERod to one of the backup plan teams and, because the other options placed a different valuation than the Dodgers, the fanbase is blaming Harris for not getting enough back for Rodriguez. Which gets to the idea that had been discussed a couple of times yesterday... holding the line and not just selling for pennies on the dollar, ala JD Martinez1 point

wait a second, you mean the guy that disappeared for almost an entire season for "family reasons" is actually a total unreliable flake? wow. i'm stunned.1 point

Scot Harris and Andrew Friedman got sand bagged. Simple as that. As such Harris will wait to see if Erod opts in or opts out. There will be no extra $$ offered by Detroit. If Erod surprises by opting in my bet he will be traded soon thereafter. Two years in a row Erod’s best curve was off field.1 point

ERod was seen asking if it was too late to change his mind.1 point

get ready for lots of national stories giving the tigers an F for this trade deadline.1 point
-
I do think we, collectively, underestimated the complications presented by ERod's contract. Which is a differentiator from some of the other pitchers traded, some of whom were pure rentals.1 point
-
We don’t know what happened but it seems he was focusing on Baltimore and their GM was not budging so left with little options he gambled Erod would waive the no trade. It’s also possible the industry is wary of Erod after last season and his commitment level. Yes the 3 years is low but still too high if the player has questionable tendencies.1 point
-
So if this is the case, why deal with LA? Why even have a conversation? I can’t wait to hear what Harris says about this.1 point
-
I usually assume it's all about the money, but given the personal problems he had last year, being close to home certainly could be an important consideration for him.1 point
-
you assume people are rational actors; not agreeing to go to play for one of the best sporting franchises on planet earth, and play in the playoffs is not a rational choice. I think the Tigers treated him well last Summer when he split on the team; maybe he sees it differently1 point
